(January 1, 2013) Serena Williams nailed six aces in sailing past Alize Cornet of France 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday at the Brisbane International.
Williams dominated with her power rocking one of her aces at 124 mph (200 kilometers per hour).
“I just really went for it. I’ve hit 200 before, but they never go in so I was really excited that it went in,” Williams said. “I tried to be more aggressive.
Williams has lost once in her last 34 tour matches.
Maria Sharapova withdrew from the tournament still nursing a right collarbone injury, while seeds Petra Kvitova and Sara Errani were upset. With the defeats of Kvitova, and Errani, the tournament has lost five of its top ten seeds.
“This tournament was a really tough draw, everybody’s playing,” 2011 Brisbane winner Kvitova told media. “After the offseason, it’s hard to be on the court against some opponents.”
