Like watching a professional golfer shank one into the woods during a big tournament, there’s something gratifying about seeing Serena Williams whack herself in the face with her own racket. It’s not that I derive pleasure in the pain and suffering of others—far from it—but rather it’s nice to finally be able to relate to Williams, one of the most sleek, powerful, and graceful female athletes of this generation, because as an awkward and gangly non-athlete, I’ve been there with the self-injurious moments many a painful times. During the opening set of her second round match against Garbine Muguruza at this year’s Australian Open, U.S. tennis superstar Serena Williams’ follow through on a forehand catches her square on her lip. She seems in some pain after the fact, but a sore mouth didn’t stop her from cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over her Spanish opponent. Serena tweeted her disbelief at how klutzy she was when the match was over… My lip hurts lol. can’t believe I smacked myself right in the kisser! #clumsysmurf #dummysmurf #MyOwnWorstEnemySmurf — Serena Williams (@serenawilliams) January 17, 2013 Good thing Serena didn’t smack herself in the thigh on her follow through, because that could have caused some serious damage. Not to Serena, but to her racket. Those muscular thighs could crush a man’s head like a grapefruit.
