Gilles Simon beat 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro in the third round of the U.S. Open on Sunday. The 12th-seeded Simon rallied from a set down and won two tiebreakers in a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory. The Frenchman fought off three straight set points in the fourth set to reach the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows for the first time. Simon had 13 aces. The 18th-seeded del Potro was unable to defend his title last year because of wrist surgery. He had 72 unforced errors Sunday. Simon avenged a second-round loss to the Argentine at Wimbledon.
