At the Citi Open, Russian tennis player Olga Puchkova, ranked 88th in the world, just lost a point of Paula Ormaechea of Argentina, when she hit a ball towards a line judge and hit him hard in the knee.
She insisted it was an accident, but the judges weren’t hearing it as she was cited for a code violation.
“I wasn’t looking where the tennis ball would go,” Puchkova said, via the Huffington Post. It didn’t matter, accident or not, WTA supervisor Melanie Tabb explained. The rules still required her to be kicked out of the tournament.
“It’s not just the intention” that matters, Tabb said. “It’s the result of her action. And she did hit the line (judge). And he was bruised on his knee from the ball, because it was hit very hard… She didn’t mean to do it, but it happened; Clearly, you hit someone with a ball, that’s pretty much a default situation.”
