Queens, New York—No. 6 seed Juan Martin del Potro reached his first career Grand Slam final today by defeating No. 3 seed Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
From the onset of the match it was evident that Nadal's day would be a fairly long and frustrating one. His serve was exposed, and his returns were landing dismally short.
By contrast, del Potro was winning his service games with ease and breaking Nadal's serve at will.
The swirling winds in Ashe Stadium did not seem to affect the ball-striking of the Argentine. Del Potro's movement was exceptional considering the magnitude of moment, and it never appeared that he was feeling the nerves of reaching his first Slam final.
Nadal's movement appeared on target, but his game-plan seemed deflated by the sheer power of his opponent.
The match essentially ended when Nadal was serving at 1-3 down in the second set. He attempted to clock a 125 mph serve (his hardest on the day) to no avail. After that serve was missed...
