1 Game Short

We lost the championship 5-1 to Bishop Timon. Click on the link for the details. The boys just ran out of gas/no legs after the great game on Friday. Great group of kids, some took it hard, but they had much to be proud of. Just a great season 18-3-1 in league and playoff action and 22-7-1 overall.

On to the Championship Game

Well the boys are 1 win away from the JV league championship in high school hockey. It took 2 OT's and a shootout o do it. 2-1 over Canisius High School JV. Great action packed game, scoreless thru 2 periods, we scored early in the 3rd period they tied it late. 2 scoreless OT's we score the only shoot out goal. Our goalie was outstanding. Sunday 12:40 pm should be a great game.

Successful First Playoff Game

Well, ourJV hockey team was victorious in the quarter finals beating Niagara Falls JV 7-1. The kids fell behind 1-0 early but took over the game in the 2nd period scoring 4 goals. Friday night is the semi finals against a very good defensive team from Canisius high school. Sounds like it could be a one goal game winning margin and OT seems a good possibility.

The Reds have started their ST schedule in chilly Florida. Two more weeks, in the cold & snow before we head south to Sarasota/Siesta Key.

The Sabres made a big trade and won their first game since the moves over Nashville 8-4. The new guy Steve Bernier scored a pair of goals. Good Start for him. Let's see after the first couple of games "honeymoon period" is over, if he can continue to be effective.

ST Opens Sabres Losing HS Hockey JV Playoffs

Well spring training starts this week for the Reds. Its spring and hope springs eternal for all teams. No predictions for my team yet,too early, and I'll wait to I personally see them in 3 weeks or so. And then, spring training performances can be very mis-leading. I am anxious to see Homer Bailey, Johnny Cueto, Matt Maloney, Edison Volquez, and Francisco Cordero throw for the Reds. I saw Jay Bruce in a couple intra squad games last spring and he looked impressive, great looking swing. As did Joey Votto, and he had a great year at Louisville and a very good September for Cincy.

Now for the Sabres, yikes they go 8-0-2 prior to this week end and then look horrible in New York against the Rangers losing 5-1 and not much better against the Penguins yesterday losing 4-1. I hope they make the playoofs, but I'm not very confident today. Defensemen playing average at best. Leadership is lacking. We'll see.

My HS JV hockey team- Williamsville East is getting ready for the playoffs next week. 16-2-1 best record in league play and 20-6-1 overall. Best record in my 6 years on the coaching staff. Told the boys the only thing that would prevent them from winning the championship is their desire and determination or precisely the lack of these two items. I know they can do it, I hope they feel the same.

49 Days to Sarasota

As I write this there are 49 days until we leave for Sarasota/Siesta Key and Reds spring training. This will be our 3rd consecutive year to Sarasota and we love it Can't wait to leave the cold and snow of western NewYork. Sadly this may be the last or close to the last trip to Florida, unless Sarasota county approves the funding for the Ed Smith Stadium upgrades. Goodyear,AZ may be nice, new, and just as warm & sunny, but it is a drive of 2300 miles rather than the 1250 to Sarasota. Just a brief opening article for my page, more to come on the Reds from my perspective and if you are into hockey I'll be commenting on the Buffalo Sabres and high school hockey where I am an assistant JV coach.
