Allen Houston Nostalgia

I think this moment was the last time I actually enjoyed watching Knicks basketball. With Houston's comeback cut short (it never really should have started) this Knicks team still feels like the same collection of under-achievers. I would love to be proven wrong.

Jose Uribe Killed in Car Crash

The crash happened last night at 3 am in the Dominican republic. Uribe played with the Giants when he was in the bigs and is related to Juan Uribe, now playing for the White Sox. Uribe was 47 years old.

As a sidenote, from Wikipedia "Jose was also humorously the "Player to Really be Named Later". Early in his career, he was delivered as "the player to be named later" in a trade between the Giants and the Cardinals. Between the time of the initial trade and his delivery, he changed his name from Jose Uribe Gonzalez (Gonzalez is his mother's name) to just Jose Uribe (Uribe is his father's name) because, as he put it, "There are too many Gonzalezes in baseball!". Thus he really was "named later".

Moneyballing Basketball

Sure it works for baseball and thanks to Billy Beane and the A's everyone now gives a damn about OBP. But whats the winning formula for basketball?

Whatever Happened to Latrell Sprewell

Great article from Hoopsaddict that raises a valid question. Sure I was pissed when John Starks got moved for Spree to bring Latrell to the Knicks. But then again, re-living "the Dunk" ad nauseum only covers up so many 2-14 nights from the floor and Spree kept the Knicks hopes alive for a number of years. The guy brought pure hustle to the hardwood like so few modern ballers do.

Rumor: Warriors Looking to Buy Out Adonal Foyle's Contract

Great video clip included in this post. And to think, he was taken right before McGrady in the 1997 draft. Some franchises are just destined to lose.

Shaq is a Go for Tonights Game Against the Nets

Just saw them confirm it on TV. Get him back in your fantasy basketball lineup if you are in a daily transaction league.

Mark Cuban Talks Team Management Off the Court

Just great insight into some of the things Cuban has to consider with the Mavs off the court...specifically dealing with team alumni and their role as mentors to current players. Whether you agree with all of his antics or not, you have to respect how much Cuban shares with the fans.

New Pacers Blog: Cornrows

So, I am a sucker for a great tagline. For the new Pacers blog Cornrows:

"In 49 states it's just basketball...but this is Indiana!" Thats enough for me to give this blogger a shot.

His first blog...looks like Reggie Miller and Spike Lee miss each other...

NBA SLEEPER TEAM: Orlando Magic?

HoopsAddict is expecting big steps forward from Dwight Howard and Jameer Nelson. Since the rest of East doesnt really invoke fear, he might be onto something. At a minimum, I would expect both Howard and Nelson to make improvements to their stats for fantasy sports purposes. While not by huge margins, both players assists and points both jumped after the all star break. The 20 year old Howard was already a second round fantasy pick this year but if the coaches are really going to unleash him offensively as hoopsaddict mentions he becomes a first round value.

Knicks Waive Jalen Rose

Is it possible that Isiah actually made a smart move? Waiving Jalen Rose means thats one less ego to satisfy. 14 ballhog/crybabies to go.

Video of Lebron at McDonalds High School Dunk Contest

Clips from way back when Lebron was just a kid (about 3 years ago). No camera tricks, although he does make dunking on a regulation net look like he is taking advantage of the seven foot jammer I had in my basement as a kid.

Props to hoopsaddict.com for finding the clip.

Steve Kerr comments on NBA Parity

Apparently, Steve Kerr doesnt think that NFL style parity is good for the NBA. One of his claims is that with 30 teams, there arent enough superstars to pair up on one team a la Jordan/Pippen. Personally, I think that is bull (no pun intended). There is a lot less talent spread over more players in NCAA ball and it is infinitely more interesting than the NBA. The fact of the matter is that the NBA has placed too much reliance on superstar talent to the detriment of the game. Hustle, heart, team ball and close cames is what keeps the NCAA interesting. The pros could learn a thing or two from watching the young kids. Not knowing who is going to win the game is a good thing and has given the NFL the largest fan base of all pro sports. I am sorry to hear that Kerr's championship runs have spoiled his interpretation of modern sport.

Do you believe the Hype? In-Depth Preview of the Chicago Bulls

Can someone get Tyrus Thomas a starting job with this team? In last night's win against the Grizzlies, Thomas led the team with 12 points, 2 steals and 4 blocked shots. (Of course he also had 4 turnover's but we will ignore that for now.) He also had more minutes on the floor than any other Bull.

Rallying troops for the Chicago Blackhawks bandwagon

So I actually just stumbled onto this blog today. Its titled: Fleece the Pig, Flog the Pony. Thats good enough for me to check back with them on Chicago sports coverage. The Blackhawks are 4-2 but following the team for the last 8 years would tell you not to get too excited just yet.
