Over the last several weeks, 4 fifths of the National League Central's clubs got stronger, while one did not acquire anybody.
The Diamondbacks acquired hurler Dan Haren from the
Oakland Athletics, in exchange for their farm system, the Dodgers added power-hitting centerfielder
Andruw Jones, the Giants signed hard-nosed centerfielder
Aaron Rowand to a 5-year contract and the Padres traded for veteran centerfielder
Jim Edmonds.
The Rockies, still looking to trade closer, turned setup-man,
Brian Fuentes, did not acquire any star, but they still signed reliever Luis "The Viz" Vizcaino, to fill the vacancy which will be created once the aforementioned Fuentes is shipped off.
The Rockies, last year's National League Champions, who got into the playoffs on the last day they could, have decided to keep their current roster going into the 2008 season, while adding and losing a few "minor parts".
The other NLC clubs decided to commit "major moves" and try to "win now", which seems to be a common phrase nowadays, by signing UFAs to lucrative deals or by dealing prospects/farm systems for players at their peeks.
Only time will tell if these were the right moves to make, even though they "seem" like the right ones...
