Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Giants and Padres bolster up; defending NL champs stand pat

Over the last several weeks, 4 fifths of the National League Central's clubs got stronger, while one did not acquire anybody.

The Diamondbacks acquired hurler Dan Haren from the Oakland Athletics, in exchange for their farm system, the Dodgers added power-hitting centerfielder Andruw Jones, the Giants signed hard-nosed centerfielder Aaron Rowand to a 5-year contract and the Padres traded for veteran centerfielder Jim Edmonds.

The Rockies, still looking to trade closer, turned setup-man, Brian Fuentes, did not acquire any star, but they still signed reliever Luis "The Viz" Vizcaino, to fill the vacancy which will be created once the aforementioned Fuentes is shipped off.

The Rockies, last year's National League Champions, who got into the playoffs on the last day they could, have decided to keep their current roster going into the 2008 season, while adding and losing a few "minor parts".

The other NLC clubs decided to commit "major moves" and try to "win now", which seems to be a common phrase nowadays, by signing UFAs to lucrative deals or by dealing prospects/farm systems for players at their peeks.

Only time will tell if these were the right moves to make, even though they "seem" like the right ones...

A couple of UFA reminders...

With all the buzz being attributed to Johan Santana and Miggy Cabrera, I think I should remind you guys which OTHER guys could be going where.

David Eckstein (SS): BAL (If Tejada is dealt), LAA, SD (If Greene is dealt), STL...

Octavio Dotel (RP): ATL, DET, HOU, NYM

Jose Guillen (RF): BAL, KC

Troy Percival (RP): HOU, NYY, SFG

Aaron Rowand (CF): CHW, HOU, PHI, TEX

Underpaid Stars of 2008

This list does not include arbitration players, who can not command their own salary.

1B Mark Teixeira (ATL)- 9.4 M

SS Miguel Tejada (BAL)- 13 M

DH David Ortiz (BOS)- 12.5 M

RF Vladimir Guerrero (LAA)- 14.5 M

SS Jimmy Rollins (PHI)- 7 M

Not a long list, but worth mentioning!

Red Sox lose out on Wood sweetpstakes, might turn to Japan or Percival

BOSTON, MASS. -- The Cubs re-signed veteran pitcher Kerry Wood to a one-year contract worth an estimated US$4.2 million with a possibility of adding another US$3.45 M in incentives.

The 30-year old's career has been on hold during the past several years as he has not had a healthy season over his last 4, during which he started a combined 36 games and appeared in 69.

This move means the Red Sox have to pursue their quest for an inning-eater and another stabilizing presence to the bullpen, to complement Hideki Okajima.

Troy Percival might be an option, if he chooses not to close, which would be odd given the fact that he has multiple teams after him that are looking for a man in the 9th inning, like the Cordero-less Brewers.

Japan might also be an option, who offers numerous experienced relievers, like Yasuhiko Yabuta.

Who knows, Theo Epstein might even deal Coco Crisp for a position player and a high-end reliever.

Only time will tell, have faith Red Sox Nation!
