Week 4: Philadelphia Eagles @ Chicago Bears

Well it seems like this year is just draggin' on and on for me, considering this is my senior year. Not to mention the fact that each and every week of the Philadelphia Eagles 2008 seems to last a lifetime in waiting to see if this is the team that will capture that elusive Lombardi Trophy. It's only Week 4 in the NFL and already smack talk about bein' 2-1 or 3-0 have risen through the fans of teams who hold those records. I, however, choose to remain to my "let 'em show how they are on the field" logic, 'cuz that's the only logic in football. Anyway, the Eagles will travel to Chicago this week to play a revenge game of sorts. After losing an embarrassing defensive let-down last year to the Chicago Bears (19-17) the Eagles show up with a much improved, and healthy, defense and an offense that sees McNabb healthy. Though he suffered a chest contusion last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the coaches and doctors say he should be fine this week. If the Eagles are to have any luck beating this stingy Bears defense, McNabb will have to be healthy and play like he did in the first half last week in Philadelphia (15/15 passes 104 yds.) The Eagles' defense also showed great improvement to the let-down of 41 points to the Cowboys a weeks ago. Brian Dawkins had key plays in the game, showing that he can still play at age 34, and as a defensive player too. Dawkins made a key forced fumble and fumble recovery to give the birds the ball at around Pittsburgh's 30-20 yd. line. The offense took over, and kicker David Akers kicked the field goal to seal it up with 1:00 left to go, 15-6. Since RB Brian Westbrook is out, Buckhalter must show up and provide some good power running. Buckhalter is good in space, so if the big Eagles offensive line can give him that space, the Eagles will be movin' the chains. If McNabb can spread the ball around as well to a, hopefully, healed Reggie Brown and young-but-impressive DeSean Jackson, then the Eagles could have this game locked up. The Bears have a great defense and must get to McNabb if they want to win this thing. Since the Eagles haven't started out this season with a winning record in a tough NFC East division, this could be a long game for the Bears. Home field advantage will be one of few things on the side of Da Bears. Since the two teams also play on primetime Sunday night, it could be advantage to the Eagles to show the world watching at home, that Dallas will be one, if not the only, prime time loss this year.

Week 3: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (My Personal Preview)

After the tough loss on Monday night, not a single Eagles fan had a single second of peace, not until maybe a day after. There are many excuses for both teams, but unfortunately more for the Eagles as they made just a few more key mistakes then the Cowboys. It was a great game, and it's time to put it behind us like Dave Spadaro said, and look forward to a friggin' annoying Pittsburgh Steelers.

As long as I've been alive (which isn't that long) I don't ever remember a time where the Eagles beat the Steelers. In 2004 it was a humiliating loss that somehow still ended in a season ending in a Super Bowl appearance. Also recently in the preseason with a 16-10 meaningless opening preseason game. Now it's serious. Both teams bring something to the table (obviously) The Steelers have Ben Roethlisberger (spelling error possibly, then again who can spell his name?), the sometimes dubbed "Eagles Killer" Hines Ward, a capable rookie in Limas Sweed, and obvious talent Santonio Holmes. On defense they have players that are capable of handling an offensive attack. The Eagles have yet another tough WR corp. to try and take down. If they want any hope of beating the 4-3 defense and big brute of a QB that is Roethlisberger, they're going to need to do what they seemed to have failed to do last Monday night: PRESSURE THE QUARTERBACK AND COVER THE WIDE RECEIVERS!!!!! After holding Marion Barber between the 20's (and sometimes the red zone) pretty well, the Eagles look like they'll be able to handle newly recovered vet RB, Willie Parker. The Steelers are just as balanced a team as the Cowboys are, and pressure pressure pressure is what could be the difference maker. The Eagles must have DeSean step up in this game. He looked quick and able to get outa coverage against the Cowboys, but just couldn't get a couple of catches in. If DeSean also has a big game in his punt returning, then things should start to pick up for the Eagles. Donovan McNabb has been looking better than perfect and as most people have said "The Old Donovan". To me, this isn't any old Donovan I remember. He's tougher, willing to stay in the pocket until the VERY last minute and then run, unlike from 2004-2006 where if he had nothing to shoot for he took off within a matter of milliseconds. McNabb made a perfect example of what I mean when he literally escaped from between two Cowboys and made a play by using his feet as we know and love him. Even the Hall of Famer Steve Young said our offense is a higher powered offense than he's seen in recent years, even when T.O. was with us. Until Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis come back though, McNabb's receivers absolutely MUST make all the catches they can. DeSean can't celebrate pre-maturely, and the defense MUST show the tenacity and pressure they did against the Rams. Look forward to a second great Eagles game in a row.

Week 2: The Philadelphia Eagles @ The Dallas Cowboys (My Preview)

It's only one day after Week 1 and already the hype over the Week 2 game for both Eagles and Cowboys fans is through the roof. Both teams had big wins over their opponents yesterday with the Eagles slamming the Rams at home 38-3, and the Cowboys showing they aren't in danger of an NFC East Championship hangover with their 28-10 win in Cleveland over the Browns. Both teams have many things going for them. The Cowboys have the bigger names with Terrell Owens at WR, Jason Witten at TE, Marion Barber at RB, Adam "Pacman" Jones at CB (Yeah I still call him Pacman, get over it Dallas), and of course, Tony Romo at QB. The Eagles' big names? Donovan McNabb at QB, Brian Westbrook at RB, Asante Samuel at CB, and Brian Dawkins at FS. The Eagles also have upcoming players, such as DeSean Jackson and Quintin Demps. Jackson answered quite a few prayers in Philadelphia as he showed he can be a fine replacement for the 1st string man ahead of him, Reggie Brown. He's also proven in punt returns. Jackson had the 6th most receiving yards and receptions for the entire NFL in week 1. Not something that stands out, but remember, he's only a rookie. Quintin Demps is also a good special teams player. Demps had two back-to-back two yard line downers after punter Sav Rocca punted 2 of the 3 times the Eagles didn't score. He might not have had a chance to show how he can get yardage from a kickoff return (thanks to the Eagles not letting the Rams score anything but a field goal), but that could change come next Monday night. This game is seemingly going to be a big slug-fest on both sides. The Eagles showed that when all of their players are healthy, it's gonna be hard for any offense to get things going on defense. They also showed that if McNabb is healthy, he'll make plays to the unknown's that he has at WR. McNabb was the lead passer in week 1, throwing for 360 yards. He spread the ball out to seven different WR's. Three of his WR's had more than 100 yds on the day, making this the first time that's happened for the Eagles since 1960. The Cowboys' Tony Romo showed he can take a hit, and also pack a punch. Romo was hit hard after the Browns' pressured him, but got right back up. Romo also connected with Owens and Witten for big gains in the play. The Eagles-Cowboys game has been one of the hardest hitting games the NFL has known. This Monday night, it could show what both teams are made of. Here's my opinion though, if the Eagles come out and play terribly, well that's not good news for Philly. However, if they come out and play well, but the Cowboys just somehow manage to get by, that says something about this team. If the Eagles just get by the Cowboys, that'll show the Eagles need to have more consistency or fast starts, but come out with a win. If the Eagles come out and just blow the Cowboys away, then everyone knows what that means. I just hate what the media could say no matter what happens. They all focus on last year and the media is going to basically kiss the feet of the Patriots, the Cowboys, and Brett Favre. I don't honestly care what's media worthy and whether they're doing their job, but if they don't give credit where credit is due, then that's just offensive to me. Believe me though, I don't want to have all this national hype that the Eagles could win the NFC East this year and go to the Super Bowl, I want to be an underdog. However, I want the respect that the team deserves instead of getting a "Oh, they just got lucky". Eagles @ Dallas. 'Nuff said.

Week 1: The St. Louis Rams @ The Philadelphia Eagles (My Preview)

When I first saw that the St. Louis Rams were the first on the Eagles path of destruction, I said to myself "If the Eagles don't win at home against a former 3-13 team, I might not follow the rest of the season". Of course that's a stupid thing to say being that I'm an Eagles fan and I can't stand to not watch my team play football. Anyway, I believe that it doesn't matter what a team's record was the previous season, anything can happen the following year. I mean, take a look at the Chicago Bears. They weren't that dangerous a team in '05, but then in '06 they went to the Super Bowl. Last year, they didn't even make the playoffs. So, anything can happen in the NFL. That's why I'm not taking the Rams for granted. They have one of the best RB's in the league in Steven Jackson, a capable QB in Marc Bulger, and they still have the future Hall of Famer Torry Holt still with them. On defense, the Rams have the first rounder Chris Long who could make an impact early on in his career. They also have Leonard Little who's a threat as a defensive end. However, Donovan McNabb has been around long enough to know what to do when players like this are up against him, and I have faith that he'll be able to pick apart both sides of the Rams defense and put points on the board. Everyone already knows the depth and skill of the Eagles, so I'm not going to go into detail about them. If the Eagles come out of the gate making big plays on offense, defense, and special teams, then the game will easily go to Philadelphia. Still, no one should take any team for granted.

Philadelphia Eagle Fans (My Look Into The Bleeding Green Nation)

I believe that Philadelphia Eagles fans are the toughest, most passionate, and most loyal fans in not only the NFL, but (aside from maybe soccer fans) the world as well. Now, I've only been a fan since around 1998. I've been a fan for such a short amount of time, well, 'cuz I'm only 18, and I just began to understand everything about the game around then. But ever since that year, I've been constantly praising the Eagles for success, and giving them the Philadelphia-famous boo's when they don't succeed, or don't look like they even tried to. Now, I can't deny that for every NFL team, there is at least one loon that dresses up and shows he's the #1 (or possibly only) fan of that team. Unfortunately, I can't help but be biased in saying that every Eagles fan (not people that say they "like" them) is like that super fan that paints his entire body with Bengals stripes or puts the spiked shoulder pads, spiked knee pads, and black face paint on. An entire stadium full of people pegged snowballs at Santa Clause! That might not be saying much to some people, but you've got to understand the story and actually think about the event in detail (which I shall not go into for my dislike of how I do anecdotes). In the ol' Vet of 2002 and earlier there were many, if not weekly, fights with non-Eagles fans. In the new Lincoln Financial Field, I'm surprised I haven't heard stories of a Cowboys fan being thrown off of the standing column where Reggie White's banner is. I understand that fans of other teams can be passionate. Pittsburgh Steelers fans, Green Bay Packers fans, and Oakland Raiders fans are some of them. Here's my problem with this though: they've won Super Bowls. That's why the tickets have been sold out more consecutively than Philadelphia. Even if the Steelers or Packers had a bad season, they already have Super Bowls to be proud of. Attendance percentage or sales shouldn't really dictate how passionate a fan is. It's not like there are wealthy people everywhere you turn in Philadelphia. South Philadelphia isn't exactly Malibu, California, but I guarantee you that the number of dedicated fans in that area would kill (I'm not kidding) just to have any kind of ticket if they could afford it. For the record, I'm not saying Philadelphia is some poor hell-hole, I'm just pointing out that statistics like sell-out crowds shouldn't identify a city's passion. I'm probably a psychopath with how crazy I am about these birds. I might not be knowledgeable about everything like statistics in the team or many detailed information about the team's history (remember, I'm only 18), but I can say that I feel like this team gives the city hope for something better in our times of despair. We feel like we're together with this team. We use the term "we" or "us" when we talk about the Eagles' upcoming seasons. For example, I told a Baltimore Ravens fan that "We're going to win the NFC East, and beat the Ravens to do so". I've said something corny, but true. The doctors can't take my blood because they say I bleed green. I do. Philadelphia does. That's what an Eagles fan is. E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!

The Philadelphia Eagles Can, Should and MUST Win the Super Bowl

The Philadelphia Eagles have been one of the toughest teams to play against ever since 2000. Anyone who disagrees with that either hasn't watched the NFL at all, or is just an ignorant Cowboys fan who just wants to talk some trash about the Eagles. This year, the Eagles have almost all the weapons to make a Super Bowl run, or even win the Super Bowl. I say almost because to every single Eagles fan the team NEEDS a true #1 WR. While, yes, I agree Donovan McNabb could use another Terrel Owens or Randy Moss caliber receiver, the Eagles coaching staff and front office obviously believes the current WR's are good enough to bring the Eagles to the playoffs. I have faith in them, and I think the rest of Philadelphia should as well. The defense has been upgraded by ways of signing Asante Samuel during the offseason. The defense was good last year, but not the interception-happy, Jim Johnson defense that it was in past years. Now that everyone on the defensive side of the ball is healthy ( Brian Dawkins, Lito Sheppard) the defense is ready to come back to it's 2004 potential. In fact, the entire team is when you think about it. The rookie draft class has been more promising in their first year than any draft class in recent years. Joe Mays has been dubbed "The Headbuster", Quintin Demps is a ballhawk if there ever was one, Mike McGlynn is a promising offensive linemen, Trevor Laws is a promising and impact-making defensive tackle, and let's not forge about the Cal University star, DeSean Jackson. Though all the rookies played well in a basically meaningless preseason, Philadelphia fans can't help but be excited for the way all these rookies played, especially since the coaches are speaking so highly of them. However, none of this matters until the kickoff against the St. Louis Rams on September 7th. So, just in case I've ranted or lost my head with all this, let me finally make my point. The Eagles have the team to make a Super Bowl run. Many people think that. Philadelphia KNOWS that. If Donovan McNabb stays healthy one game at a time, then I dare someone to argue they aren't going to the Super Bowl.
