The latest at Notre Dame is two-fold: The Failing Irish inked one of the nation's top recruiting classes, and head coach Charlie Weis has said that he will give up play-calling duties next season. Neither will make that much of a difference. Notre Dame has always had top recruits, even during this season's dismal campaign, and Charlie's offensive play-calling had nothing to do with the team's terrible defensive performance.
Upon his arrival in South Bend, Charlie Weis was heralded as an offensive genius. Turns out he's been a genius at not much more than tanking Notre Dame's football program. But he once almost beat USC, so that's good for at least a 10-year extension, right?
His success with the Patriots was probably more due to Bill Belicheat than anything else, and it's amazing Weis still has a job. The only reason he hasn't been canned is because his 10-year extension was the first order of business for what at the time was ND's new AD. If the AD fires Weis, he's tying his own noose.
If Notre Dame wants to get better, they're going to first have to fire Charlie Weis, and since that seems unlikely, this USC fan and others should just sit back and enjoy the train wreck.
