As the college football season comes closer to the end there are still five teams that are undefeated and at least ten to fifteen other schools that have a realistic shot at competing in the National Championship game in New Orleans. Why should the NCAA let a computer that relies souly on statistics to decide what two teams play for the championship? Ohio State, Boston College, Hawaii, and Kansas could all end the season undefeated, I didn't include Arizona State because I don't see them getting by both Oregon and USC. Four undefeated teams at the end of the season makes a perfect plus one formula between a four team playoff. Even if Arizona State makes it past the Ducks and Trojans the BCSwill be totally wrecked. To tell three teams that run the table in their respected confrences and overall that they are not good enough to play for the championship because they didn't rack up the most passing yards, or beat their opponents bad enough is completley crazy. Isn't the whole idea of football in the words of Herman Edwards to "PLAY TO WIN THE GAME". The BCS could end up with five undefeated teams and probubly not even be close to giving a legitamit argument for only two teams, but how CAN you argue five teams for two spots.

On a night when five of the top ten teams in the nation droped their first loss of the season, many other up and coming teams look to make a big move in the poles. USC narrowly snuck by Washington, and LSU was less than impressive against Tulane. Then the real upsets are #3 Oklahoma losses to Colorado, #4 Florida loses once again to Auburn, #5 West Virginia lost to South Florida, #7 Texas lost big to Kansas State, and #10 Rutgers finally got in the top ten and lost to Maryland. The losses leave major holes in the poles for teams like Cal, South Florida, and even Oregon even though they lost still proved to be very impressive. Sunday afternoon when the AP and coaches pole come you may be surprised by some of the new rankings.

BY NOW ALL OF THE COUNTRY KNOWS ABOUT 2-TIME DIVISION 1-AA CHAMPIONS, APPALACHAIN STATE CAME UP WITH THE UPSET OF THE SEASON BEATING NUMBER FIVE RANKED MICHIGAN IN THE BIG HOUSE IN FRONT OF 109,501 FANS. THIS BRINGS ME TO THE QUESTION OF JUST HOW FAR IN THE RANKINGS SHOULD MICHIGAN FALL. OUT OF THE TOP TEN OR OUT OF THE TOP 25 ALL TOGETHER, AS ESPN ANYLIST MARK MAY SUGGESTS.

On July 29th the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series makes it's once a year stop in Indianapolis for the Allstate 400. All eyes are going to be on the current points leader Jeff Gordon as he will look to be the only driver in Indianapolis Motor Speedway history to win five races at the track. Jack Rousch will be seekinng his first Brickyard victory most likely to be with Carl Edwards or Matt Kenseth who has had many close calls in the past. 8 of the 14 races have been won by Chevrolet which this week besides Jeff Gordon will feature defending race winner Jimmie Johnson, and Tony Stewart. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Denny Hamlin are going to be making a strong push at a win as well. Not to forget some of the up and coming drivers that have been getting hot lately with Casey Mears, Martin Truex Jr. and Clint Bowyer. My pick next weekend at Indianapolis wil be the 24 Dupont Chevrolet of Jeff Gordon.

The 2007 Major League Baseball Season got off to a slow start for the Chicago Cubs. Many new changes of personnel of players and the acquisition of former Tampa Bay Devil Rays manager Lou Pinella. Showcasing the newly added players would be the six-year one hundred thirty million dollar man Alfonso Soriano. Along with Soriano came two players who squared off in the National League Championship Series last season, Right Fielder Cliff Floyd of the New York Mets and starting pitcher Jason Marquis of the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. Chicago began opening the season's month with a record of 10-14, not looking to promising for a good season. After finishing the month of April with a 12-15 record and combined record of 22-29 things only got worse at the beginning of June. On June 1st pitcher Carlos Zambrano and catcher Michael Barrett got into a fist fight in the dugout during a home game. The next day Lou Pinella was ejected from the ball game and then received an indefinite suspension that reached four games. Later the Cubs traded Michael Barrett to the Padres after Derrek Lee and Padres starting pitcher Chris Young got into a fight during a game before the deal was made. Both Young and Lee got a five game suspension but both appealed, and the appeal has been herd yet. The next couple of days finally began look a little bit better for the Cubs season. Chicago finished the month of June with a record of 17-11 giving the Cubs a combined record of 39-40 just six and a half games out of the first place spot in the NL central. The beginning of July didn't start to cool down either. The last game of the Brewers three game stint ended with a W. A four game series with the Washington Nationals was good for the Cubs as they went into DC and walk out with 3-1 series win. The last series before the All-Star break featured a three game series in Pittsburgh . Where the Cubs dropped two of the three games but still remain one game above .500 with a record of 44-43 just four and a half games out of first place. Hopefully the Cubs can keep the good baseball going into October a make strong playoff run, but only time will tell.

It may be a little too early for this topic but I have to speak about my Hawks.Thursday night's NBA draft was going to be a good look at what the Atlanta Hawks would be doing in the upcoming season. Already having Joe Johnson who avereged 25.0 points a game will probably do the same this year, but where do the Hawks go from there. Atlanta was already the youngest team in the NBA last season and obviously because of the draft they are only going to get younger. Many mock draft boards had the Hawks selecting the point guard from Ohio State Mike Conely Jr. with the 3rd pick, even I was. Atlanta clearly needs a point guard. I was also given a little scare when I heard Florida foward Al Horford's name called instead of Conely Jr. Don't get me wrong I love the pick but I have to question if the Hawks franchise were picking for team needs or for best avaliable. The Hawks made up for though with the 11th pick in the first round when they picked Texas A&M point guard Acie Law IV. This guy I belive can be a real deal point guard, but he is going to need some time. Law could be a very good offensive attacker in Atlanta along with Joe Johnson and Josh "Highlight Machine" Smith. The picks that were made in tonights draft were good for Atlanta but we can only wait to see what will happen in Hotlanta. I don't think they will make the playoffs but they will have a legitment improvement in the win column I believe.

As excpected, at least by me that Roger Clemens would not come to the Yankees as good as he was for the Astros last season. Clemens is now 1-3 with 5.32 ERA. He also is having injury problems. in the 6th inning of tonights Baltimore game Clemens appeared to have tweaked a groin but who knows what it really is. He is not what the Yankees need right now if they are going to get the wild card and possibly catch the Red Sox if that even has a chance of happening. Hopefully they will keep Jor Torre and make some kind of deal before the trade deadline, because there has to teams out there that would love to have someone in their lineup on their team.

The recent activities involving the Chicago Bears and Tank Johnson seemed like they would wait and give Tank another chance. Before last week when the Bears released him after he was pulled over for speeding in Arizona. Johnson is the only NFL player to be convicted of a crime and actually do time in jail. all the trouble that Adam "Pacman" Jones is involved in why are the Tennessee Titans keeping him around.Titans head coach Jeff Fisher has already stated that the organization has moved on. Then the comments were backed up by Quarterback Vince Young. Tank only served 120 days in jail, but if convicted Pacman could face 12 to 15 years in prison. That would obviously end his career in the NFL, so why don't the Titans save themselves some pride and just get rid of the Pacman. So whats the hold up!

Carlos Zambrano(9-6) picked up his 9th win in a six inning appearence. Carlos Marmol got his first save of the season in result of the win. Now the Cubs will welcome division leader Milwaukee Brewers to Wrigley Field where the Cubs will look to take a bite out if the division lead.

The Chicago Cubs have started to get on a role for the past week and it didn't stop Tuesday night. The struggling Colorado Rockies came into town yesterday with a three game losing streak that started in Toronto. Monday both teams gave Major League Baseball a game for the ages. The Cubs came out the winners and wanted to do the same Tuesday night. Alfonso Soriano got off to a hot start with a lead-off single that he later scored on a Mike Fontenot Double. Later in the first inning Cliff Floyd smacked his forth home run of the year to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead. The Cubs also exploded with four runs in the 5th inning giving them an 8-3 lead. The game was closed out with the 5th straight win for the Chicago Cubs and the 5th straight loss for the Colorado Rockies. Chicago got the win at a final score of 8-5, Ted Lilly(6-4) picked up the win and Rodrigo Lopez(4-1) recieved his first loss of the season, and Will Ohman got his first save of the season as well.

Indiana University's football program lost a very special person and coach in Terry Hoeppner. Hoeppner was an Indiana native who was really begining to turn the program around. All around the state of Indiana you feel the buzz in the air about the upcoming Hoosier football team that was going to have high expectations on the season. The tragic loss of Hoeppner has brought a dark cloud over Bloomington, as well as the rest of the state. Even the bad news of the passing of the head ball coach couldn't change the mind of recruits Cortez Smith, and Justin Pagan. Smith, a 5-11, 190 pound running back from Detroit was the first to orally commit to the program since Hoeppner's death. Pagan, a 6-5, 285 offensive lineman was short behind Smith to commit. Both Smith and Pagan are looking to make a difference in the running game at IU this coming Fall. The death of the best head football coach at Indiana since Lee Corso still doesn't slow down the off-season recruiting, and hopefully it wont slow down what this program had going for them.

The deal that would land Kevin Garnett in Los Angeles with Kobe Bryant is apperently going down the tubes. If the deal would have went through a souce of Bryant's said Kobe would have to stop and think of what the Lakers are trying to do. Minnesota were not able to get Al Jefferson from the Celtics, which caused the deal to fall, as well as other teams that could not come to an agreement on the trade.

Nascar has already penalized Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson from first practice and qualifying from last weekends Toyota/Savemert 350, but now NASCAR has penalized both drivers 100 drivers points. Jimmie Johnson has slid from 3rd to 5th in points because of the move. NASCAR also suspended crew chiefs Steve Letarte and Chad Khanus for the next six races. how much is enough for a mistake realy brought on by NASCAR itself? The cars fit the template that NASCAR has mandated. the penalty came from work inbetween the templates. NASCAR has stated that teams can work in so called "Grey Area" between the templates, but how many teams will take that risk after what the 24 and 48 cars went through last weekend.
