Marve Suspended, Depth Chart Released - University of Miami football

Dan Stein on Robert Marve's suspension (among others) and the release of the depth chart:

"Just got back from the media session after practice.

To clear the air, Randy Shannon announced that Robert Marve has won the quarterback competition but will be suspended for the opener. Jacory Harris will go back to his understudy role the following week.

This seems awkward, but both players handled it very maturely. Marve was quoted saying that "He (Coach Shannon) didn't mess up, I messed up. I am glad to be at a place where people are held accountable for their actions."

This could be awkward, but Shannon made sure to point out that there was no quarterback controversy to see here.

6 others will miss the game with academic woes. Damien Berry, Kayne Farquharson, Eric Houston, Chris Ivory, Adewale Ojomo and Randy Phillips will join Marve on the sideline."

Brandon McGee Commitment - University of Miami football

Dan Stein comments on the most recent commitment, top cornerback Brandon McGee:

"Slowly recovering from a touch of the stomach flu following up the wisdom teeth surgery. However, my day brightened a little bit at about 10:15 a.m. when Canesport reported that Brandon McGee of Plantation High School (Lauderhill, FL) had announced his intentions to become a 'Cane..."

Fall Ball- Questions and Inferences

Dan Stein with some Fall Ball reflections and previews:

"I just had my wisdom teeth out, so I have been doing pretty much nothing except for thinking about football as of late.

I have already re-read Cane Mutiny and Meat Market by Bruce Feldman in the past 24 hours, along with some other fine literature (I thoroughly enjoyed Steinbeck's "The Winter of our Discontent", although I am not sure I completely understood the ending).

Anyways, these books as well as some lenghty conversations with my dad and friend Francis have gotten me to thinking about what can be reasonably expected from this team after one week of stellar reviews in practice for most players (up to and including Tervarris Johnson)..."

THE OLYMPICS ARE HERE!!!! THE OLYMPICS ARE HERE!!!! - blogs.themiamihurricane .com

Matthew Bunch on why he loves the Olympics so:

"Oftentimes, when I wander around and decide to post on this blog, it's about some sporting event at the University of Miami, or something quirky on TV, or something that will surely piss off an entire state (sorry, Louisiana).

But today I come with a great joy in my heart. Today is 8.8.08, the day the Games of the XXIX Olympiad open in Beijing, China. I believe there's no other one sporting event, that doesn't directly involve a team I support, that I enjoy more than the Olympics..."

Snoop Dogg is an embarrassment to fandom - blogs.themiamihurricane .com

The Miami Hurricane's Editor in Chief Matthew Bunch on Snoop Dogg's possible fanhood violation:

"Usually I'm a fan of quirky news. When celebrities and sports collide, hilarity tends to ensue. But something I saw online last week really ticked me off."

Curtis Porter Commitment - University of Miami football

Dan Stein comments on recruiting, specifically that of defensive lineman Curtis Porter:

"Gary Ferman and Canesport are reporting that lineman Curtis Porter of Victory Christian High School in Charlotte, NC, has committed. He is a large kid, measuring in at 6'2", 334 lbs. This commitment has several impacts. First of all, it should complete the DT class. Shannon already has Luther Robinson in the stable, and Porter is the type of big run stuffer every team needs. He will probably have to lose weight before he sees the field here, but for every pass rusher at the position a team needs a run stuffer."

Recruiting Update- Defense - University of Miami football

Dan Stein looks at Miami's recruiting landscape, focusing on the defensive side of the ball:

"Today I will try and update you guys on what the defensive recruiting board may or may not look like for the Hurricane coaching staff. As I said in the last blog, I am not an insider. I do not claim to be an expert. I welcome arguments and corrections of any information that may be incorrect. However, this is at least a good starting point to understand what this class might end up looking like in February..."

Miami's sporting venues will see you in the pictures - blogs.themiamihurricane .com

Matthew Bunch takes a look at UM's basketball arena and (former) football stadium, in a unique location:

"I'm betting that most of you watch television. I'm also betting that in your watching of television, you've seen advertisements for "Just For Men" hair coloring and "IcyHot" ointment. But if you weren't paying attention, you might have been missing something quite familiar to UM students and fans. Lets start with the "Just For Men"..."

Recruiting Update- Offense - University of Miami football

Dan Stein gives an update on the University of Miami's 2009 recruiting class, focusing on the offensive side of the ball:

"As we head towards fall practice, I will give a general update on what the recruiting board PROBABLY looks like for Randy Shannon and staff at this point. However, recruiting is a world of smokescreens and indecision, and I am nowhere close to an authority on the matter, so take this for what you will..."

In support of the two-quarterback system - University of Miami football

Matthew Bunch's take on Miami coach Randy Shannon's decision to use multiple quarterbacks in the upcoming college football season.

"I read on CNN's ticker that head coach Randy Shannon announced that he'd be using two quarterbacks regularly this year, as the Hurricanes attempt to break in their young crop of signal-callers. I confirmed with Manny and Shandel, and breathed a sigh of relief -- Coach Shannon made the right decision..."

Preseason Picks - University of Miami football

The Miami Hurricane's Dan Stein takes a look into the future, and predicts the who's and what's of the 2008 football season:

"As it is the season to make predictions about football teams entirely too early. This should demonstrate both the unpredictable nature of fall practice and the futility of making predictions in July..."

Position Breakdowns- Quarterbacks - University of Miami football

Dan Stein continues his position-by-position breakdown of the Miami Hurricanes, this time tackling Quarterbacks:

"2007 marked the third straight year if subpar play at the quarterback position. Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman split time, and while both showed a lot of moxie, their toughness did not translate into wins. Wright is in camp with the Minnesota Vikings, and Freeman has transferred to Baylor, setting up a battle for the quarterback position in the fall..."

Position Breakdowns- Running Backs - University of Miami football

Dan Stein continues his position-by-position breakdown of the Miami Hurricanes, this time tackling Running Backs:

"Tonight we take a look at the running backs. A glance over the rosters of the NFL speaks to the reputation that The U has for putting great running backs into The League. In years past Najeh Davenport, Edgerrin James, Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, and Frank Gore (amongst others; it still pains me that James Jackson never gets his due as a great UM back)have established a pipeline from Coral Gables to the NFL at the position..."

Position Breakdowns- Fullbacks - University of Miami football

Dan Stein continues his position-by-position breakdown of the Miami Hurricanes, this time tackling Fullbacks:

"This year marks the return of the road grading fullback to the Hurricane offense (or so it seems). After being non-existent the past couple of seasons, the presence of a true blocking back should amp up the running game and open some holes to run through..."
