This is not sports but it deserves some attention. A pure miscarriage of justice and disregard of facts that could happen to anyone unfortunate to face thrid world justice.
Eric Volz (born 1979) is a former American magazine publisher serving time in Nicaragua following his conviction for the rape and murder of an ex-girlfriend. He was sentenced to thirty years in prison.
Friends and supporters in both countries insist he is innocent and the trial ignored evidence, and that Volz is the victim of anti-gringo sentiment. Volz is the son of Jan Eric Volz, a member of the Christian rock band The 77s.
Volz is a native of Nashville and a graduate of the University of California, San Diego, where he majored in Latin American Cultural Studies.Volz moved to Managua a few years ago, where he sold real estate and launched EP (El Puente) magazine, advocating for smart growth and ecotourism.
In November 2006, Doris Ivania Jiménez, a Nicaraguan who had dated Volz, was raped and murdered at midday in her store in San Juan del Sur, a coastal town near Rivas.
However, according to associates, Volz was at his home in Managua, which also served as the magazine headquarters, conducting meetings and business, including a conference call with contacts in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States, and telephone and internet logs confirm this.Managua is two hours' drive from San Juan del Sur.
Volz was arrested November 23, 2006 and charged with murder, based on the confession of a Nicaraguan man who was later released.
During a trial in Rivas in which, his lawyers say, no physical evidence was produced,Volz was convicted and sentenced to 30 years in a Nicaraguan penitentiary.Volz's lawyers will appeal.
