2008 New York Baseball

The Yankees had a miserable 2008 season. The Mets have had a miserable existence!

Hey Cash, Forget a Trade, Forget Barry, Give Bernie a Call!

What kind of shape is Bernie Williams in? That is the question. Bernie's glove and clutch bat could help the Yankees off the bench and in left field. There is no doubt that Bernie has lost a step or two in the outfield and his arm is way below average, but just take a look at the bottom of the Yankee lineup. It needs help!

Brett Gardener is not the answer, at least not yet. Just about every at bat is foul ball, foul ball, strikeout looking. There is a bright future but he needs to be in the minors learning how to hit.

Trading young pitchers for a rent-a-player is too risky. Bernie is there, Brian Cashman, give him a call. Ask if he is in shape. If he is, give him a 2 week stint in the minor leagues to see if he has anything left. It can't hurt, can it?

Pedro Martinez a Failure for the Mets

The Pedro Martinez signing by the Mets in 2005 has been a failure. He has started 68 games with 30 wins in 3 1/2 seasons. The Mets intention was to sign an ace who would lead them to the World Series. Pedro has averaged less than 10 wins per year. This makes him a very expensive number five starter.

When the Mets signed Pedro in 2005, the New York media claimed that this made the Mets "legitimate". They signed more high end players and the press claimed that they were following Pedro to the Mets. I don't recall any of the players actually saying that, but the media ran with it. Pedro and the media have shared a warm and wonderful relationship ever since.

The Yankees signed Randy Johnson that very same off-season. The Big Unit came to town being his normal abrasive self. He was nasty to the media and the New York media acted surprised. Randy pitched two seasons for the Yankees and won 17 games in each of them. That's 34 wins, 4 more than the Met savior. He could never do enough in the eyes of the NY press. He was basically "run out of town".

Maybe the Mets would be in better shape now if the press ran Pedro out of town 2 years ago. Now he is nothing more than an expensive roster spot.

Yanks Reach Agreement with Richie Sexon

This is a no brainer for the Yankees. They get a right handed threat on the cheap. If he doesn't work out, they will throw him back on the scrap heap and move on. His stats this year against left handed pitchers are impressive with a .344 batting average.

FOX All Star Game Broadcast Out of Touch

FOX proved once again last night that it is completely out of touch when it comes to the televising special parts of a baseball game. I would think that trying to give the home viewer the "at the game experience" would be something that any broadcast would strive to achieve.

FOX ignored one key element and bolted for a commercial during a second.

For the millions of people who watched the game last night but have never had the opportunity to attend a game at Yankee Stadium, the "Bleacher Creatures" do the "roll call" during the top of the first inning. The fans in the bleachers simply chant the players name until he acknowledges them. This is has been going on for at least 10 years and it is unique to Yankee Stadium.

Last night in the 1st inning you could hear the creatures doing there thing. FOX completely ignored them.

In the 9th inning with one out, Terry Francona did a classy thing by going to the mound to summon Mariano Rivera into the game. As Francona signaled to the bullpen, Joe Buck mentioned that "something special was happening" and he was right. The bullpen gate swung open and the beginning notes of "Enter Sandman" rained down on Yankee Stadium. For dramatic effect, the FOX cameras panned back for a full stadium view. A great shot, the music grew louder and then ...commercial!

Unbelievable!

Bobby Murcer

A New York generation's first favorite baseball player!

If you were a Yankees fan in the early 1970's, you had one favorite baseball player and he wore #1.

Thank you Bobby. Rest in Peace.

The All Star Game Has Lost it's Magic

The Midsummer Classic is not what it used to be. Years ago before the game "counted" and before interleague play, I would look forward to the excitement of the American League taking on the powerful National League. As a Yankees fan in New York, it was always a treat to get together with my friends who were Mets fans to watch the game. The chance that we would get to see Ron Guidry face Lee Mazilli or Craig Swan take on Thurman Munson was always the highlight. The anticipation was wonderful.

Interleague play has robbed us of those times. Now, if Alex Rodriguez faces off against Billy Wagner, we get to see a stat that says "A-rod is o for 1 this year against Wagner." Something magical is lost.

Mussina's All Star Snub a Real Shame

Mike Mussina says that he "OK" with his omission from the 2008 American League All Star Team. I think it is a shame. In all likelihood this will be Mike's last shot to make the team. He is having an outstanding year and is just as deserving as any other starter who made the team.

He is even on schedule to pitch on that day. It would have been real nice to see Moose jog out to the First Base foul line with the "Moose calls" raining down from the upper deck.

I just hope Terry Francona does not cheat the hometown Yankees fans of seeing Mariano Rivera jog in from the bullpen in the 9th inning with "Enter Sandman" blaring from the centerfield speakers. As Michael Kaye says "It is the coolest entrance in sports".

The Subway Series is Boring

It's done!

When interleague play was first introduced the prospect of a meaningful game between the Mets and Yankees was exciting. Fans of both teams checked their schedules and lined up to buy tickets at Yankees Stadium or Shea Stadium depending on where the games were to be played that year. That's right, the first couple of years of interleague play, they only played each other in one series per season.

Two series per season is way too much! The players dislike it and the fans are tired of it. Apparently the national sports networks are tired of it too. FOX passed on a Saturday afternoon game in May and ESPN is passing on this Sunday night's game.

MLB doesn't seem to mind that it is entirely unfair that the Mets play the Yankees six times and the Marlins play three against Kansas City and three against Tampa Bay.

It's time for MLB to take a hard look at interleague play and make some much needed changes!

Suspended? Shawn Chacon Should Face Charges!

This is like LatRelle Sprewell all over again!

If someone assaults another human being, he should be arrested!

Why down on A-rod?

As a long time Yankees fan who lives in the metropolitan New York area, I am continually amazed at how Yankees fan can dislike Alex Rodriguez. The guy can just not do enough.

He has one of the greatest seasons ever in 2007, he comes back from an injury in early 2008 on fire and people ask "Well what will he do in the post season?

He hits a ball high off the wall in right centerfield, thinking it is gone, he doesn't hustle out of the box. Now when this type of behavior is done constantly (i.e Manny Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano) then it can be a problem. A-rod does it once and he is labeled as not having any "fire".

There is no question that Mr. Rodriguez will be in the hall of fame and be known as one of the greatest ballplayers of all time. It is a shame that these fans cannot appreciate what they are witnessing.
