Pats Undefeated Again ... What are the Odds?

FOX Sports recently addressed a question for every team. Some had serious concerns over their 2008 future, others had frivolous predictions. The Patriots question was about going undefeated... again.

First, to be predicting another undefeated season is moronic, even for a Pats fan. It was the impossible alignment of the stars, plus some very lucky breaks against Philadelphia, Baltimore and the Giant in the last week of the season. It that is the best question the writer can come up with in New England, I'd say he's flirting with receiving a moron tag. Fortunately, other questions about other teams make more sense, and those make up for the crazy hypothesizing done on the Pats question.

Forget about the Perfect Season #2. That's not the objective. Hopefully the Patriots lose early so it wont' be the same media circus it was in 2007.

Oh yeah, back to the odds. 15-1

15 to 1

That's better odds of going undefeated than the Browns had of making the playoffs the past five seasons.

Q: Can the Pats go undefeated in 2008?

A: The odds in Vegas are currently 15:1 that they do. Sure, there's been SpyGate, that whole Nick Kaczur Donnie Brasco thing, and more arrests than the Bengals this offseason. But the Pats are playing angry and their schedule is actually more manageable than it was in '08. Now, if they can just find someone to play cornerback.

If the Patriots had to use their backups, could they?

If you were in charge of the Patriots and the offensive line played like they did in the Super Bowl, what options would you have available? Assuming you could choose anyone on the current roster to step in, do you have enough choices?

That's what some writers at the Patriots Insider site did in their round table debate. The good thing is that the Patriots don't have to choose which backups to play right now, because if they did, it wouldn't be pretty.

The general take is that the Pats are in deep if the starters go down. Maybe if they didn't have a revolving door at the line they could have done better against the Giants. Then again, looking at the options, maybe not.

Richardson In The Mix At Corner?

Mike Richardson was the Patriots seventh round draft pick last year, and has become the forgotten man in the Patriots secondary since the team drafted two corners in 2008 and signed three veterans off the street. Does that mean Richardson has no shot to make the final roster? If you saw what the Notre Dame product did during the preseason before he was hurt, you might want to contend that Richardson is firmly in the mix for a role on defense.

Patriots Getting Serious About The Secondary

With all of the attention to the linebackers at the top of the Draft boards, few people are talking about the Patriots and their ongoing love affair with players from Florida (the state, not just the school).

Foxsports has this Scout.com article on the Patriots and Mike Jenkins of the University of South Florida. It looks like Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and their defensive coach, Dom Capers, have visited with two USF defenders (Jenkins and Trae Williams).

NFLDraftscout.com ranks Jenkins as the second best defensive back available, while Scout.com rankins him No. 1 overall. Williams actually had more INT's than Jenkins in their final season at USF.
