Today the Cotton Bowl is opening it's doors for the first time, to let people see the new renovations at the 78 year old stadium. For years there has been a fight between stadium organizers and the City of Dallas to update the old stadium, and for years, there has been nothing done. Then last year it was announced that the Cotton Bowl Game was going to move to the new Cowboys stadium in Arlington. That was when the city decided they better do somthing, and they did somthing to the tune of 57 million dollars.
But what will that get you? How about adding 16,000 seats, making the upper deck a full bowl, with a continuous concorse. Expanding exsisting concourses, adding two new gates, more concession stands and more restrooms. But the gem of the staduim is said to be it's new media center and larger locker rooms. With an overall seating capacity of 92,000, it can now be called the eigth largest stadium in the country.
Now comes the big question, Can the old girl still attract great games? Right now the cotton bowl has locked down Texas-OU till 2015. But since the new cowboys staduim is drawing all of the attention, nobody else has agreed to hold games there.
For the city council, and staduim organizers it will be vital for them to attract marquee matchups for this renovation to be a succsess. The first big test will come on October 11th during the annual Texas-OU game. If this game goes off great, and shows how the new improvments have made it a great venue once agian.
With all of the history at this stadium, and having the chance to bring it back to it's former glory, I for one am hoping to see some marquee games start being played here on a yearly basis. This was once the gem of the dallas football landscape, but time took it's toll and ended that greatness. Now the city puts a new shine on it, in hopes of bringing it back to it's former self.
