At a time in which many feel that boxing is under threat from the increasing popularity of mixed martial arts, the Andrade-Bute fight reaffirmed that there is no harm that the UFC can do to boxing that boxing won't first do to itself. Surrounded by controversy, Modern Boxing head writer Jim Cawkwell recaps the fights events and gives his take on what went down.

It was a performance for the ages. Bernard Hopkins defied all reasonable logic and crafted the fight of his life against perhaps his most dangerous opponent. The morning after the night before was meant for celebration of new sensation Kelly Pavlik's domination, and the obligatory obituaries for Hopkins. But the old Philly fighter was never one to follow someone else's script. Hopkins' uncooperative attitude often made him unpopular with fight fans, who bemoaned his many negative performances and insistence on pricing himself out of major fights before indulging in meaningless mandatory obligations to much lesser fighters. But Hopkins' thorough schooling of Pavlik was an example of a truly great fighter at work. Indeed, Hopkins fought like a legend... READ MORE!!!

If Samuel Peter could not become a heavyweight champion successful or popular enough to transcend the sport, it was hoped that he might at least carry the division for a while, instilling a sense of order and respectability to its chaotic ranks. With true quality at a premium throughout the division, Peter's obvious brute power produced the kind of knockouts that persuades neutrals to believe in a prospect, while purists conceded that though his talent was not a finished product, it was perhaps enough to lead the division into its future. But it takes more than strength to be a champion. And Vitali Klitschko's return to the heavyweight division exposed the embarrassing truth of Samuel Peter... READ MORE!!!

If by some freak of fortune Vitali Klitschko survives his training camp and you witness him exchanging punches with Samuel Peter, consider that Ukrainian politics' loss is boxing's gain. No really. And Arturo Gatti should definitely fight again. Actually, that's taking sarcasm a little too far. The return of former champion Klitschko is so understated that one expected light winds and tumbleweeds to sweep across the conference room when the announcement was made... READ MORE!!!

Of all Bernard Hopkins' achievements, his latest is perhaps one of the most impressive, having almost robbed a Kelly Pavlik fight of all significance. But Pavlik is so popular throughout boxing that not even the presence of the old spoiler will prevent fight fans from flocking to see Pavlik perform... READ MORE!!!

Ricky Hatton is now entrusting at least the immediate future of his fighting life to the father of the man who knocked him out ten months ago. What will Floyd Mayweather, Sr. bring to the table to help Hatton get to the next level? Surely, there is not enough time before Hatton's fight with Paul Malignaggi in Las Vegas on November 22 - but the joining of these two could send waves throughout the boxing community.

Supporting the Ricardo Mayorga-Shane Mosley main at the Staples Center this weekend is an attractive WBC welterweight title bout between new champion Andre Berto and challenger Steve Forbes. Berto won the WBC title a€" vacated by Floyd Mayweather, Jr. a€" earlier this year with a display of efficient power-punching against Mikki Rodriquez. Forbes' last fight was a unanimous decision loss to Oscar de la Hoya... READ MORE!!!

Michael Katsidis learned nothing from his knockout defeat to Joel Casamayor. But if Katsidis refuses to learn from the boxing lesson he was given by Juan Diaz last night, he really should consider another line of work because there are too many talented lightweights in the world for Katsidis to continue fighting the way he does and not get seriously hurt.

The most disturbing thing about the Jorge Barrios-Rocky Juarez fight a€" apart from the gruesome tearing of Barrios' lip a€" was the performance of referee Rafael Ramos, as well as the ringside officiating of judges Ruben Garcia, Rocky Burke, and Ruben Carrion. Through his horrendous handling of the fight, Ramos showed why he has not been the man in the middle for any major fights until last night. In the Diaz-Katsidis main event, referee Lawrence Cole a€" himself criticized in the past for dubious refereeing a€" showed how to handle multiple infractions from one fighter without interfering with the course of the fight. And where Katsidis' blatant shoulder-charging and head-butting of Diaz perhaps warranted point deductions, Cole administered warnings and let the action flow. Ramos deducted a point from Barrios as early as the third round for one of many legal belt-line punches Barrios landed throughout the fight.
