Millen Era Ends In Detroit

It's the end of another era in Detroit. Team President Matt Millen was dumped by the Detroit Lions today. And so ends another era of losing Detroit football. This era was extended too long. It should have ended earlier. I still don't understand how the season could have started with Millen at the helm.

Vikings Bench Jackson - Why Not Kitna?

vikings-bench-jackson-why-not-kitna

Today, the Minnesota Vikings announced they were benching their starting quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and replacing him with Gus Frerotte. Maybe the Lions can take a hint here and bench Jon Kitna and start either Stanton or Orlovsky.

The Vikings were my pre-season pick to win the NFC North but I strongly stressed that their weakest link was the QB and that was the one position that could ruin an entire season for a team. The Vikings obviously realize this too and are quickly making a change. They obviously have begun to think that Frerotte gives them a better chance to win now than Jackson does. Is Frerotte any better than Stanton or Orlovsky? More experienced, yes, but not a better QB - at least not at this point in his career. The one thing the Vikings hope he will do, based on his years of experience, is not make mistakes and commit turnovers. Well, that hasn't helped the Lions with Kitna.

Where Are The Lions Rookies?

After a dismal start to the season for the Lions, one has to ask, Where are the Rookies? I remember the Lions front office gloating about how good the draft was this year. If that's true, then why aren't they playing more or even dressing? Let's take a look at what the Lions have done with the significant rookie picks this year.

Kitna Gift Wraps One For The Packers

The final score read Green Bay 48, Detroit 25. However, the game was a whole lot closer than the score indicates. That is, until Jon Kitna gift wrapped the game for the Packers complete with a big red bow.

The Lions took the lead with a bit under 8 minutes to go in the game 25 - 24. Green Bay managed to mount a bit of drive and with a little over 5 minutes to go, kicked a field goal to take a 27 - 24 lead. On Detroit's next three possessions, Kitna threw three interceptions, two of them returned for TDs. All three of those passes were absolutely horrendous passes. None had a chance of completion. In the span of three minutes, thanks to those picks, the Packers were now up 48 - 25.

Up This Week: Green Bay Packers

This week the Lions face the Green Bay Packers. Before the season, I expected the Lions and Packers to challenge for 2nd place in the NFC North. After week 1, that possibility is certainly a bit muddied with the Packers beating the Vikings and the Lions sucking wind against the Falcons.

Lions Roster Changes This Week

Looks like we might get some shake ups in the lineup this week for the Lions. After last week's dismal performance against the Atlanta Falcons, some will be a welcome site.

According to Offensive Coordinate Jim Colletto, we can expect to see Gosder Cherilus some at right tackle this week. He has been backup up George Foster who didn't really look any better last week than he did last year. We spent a first round pick on this kid, and Foster isn't cutting it, so let's get him in there and see what he can. Unless he simple puts Kitna at serious injury risk, I don't see a down side to seeing what the rook can do.

Lions Embarrassed in Week 1

After a somewhat promising off season and then an undefeated pre-season where, more importantly, they came out healthy. I had some high hopes for the beginning of the Lions 08/09 campaign. After a thrashing at the hands of the Atlanta Falcons 34 - 21 (and the score really wasn't that close), those high hopes have been dampened.

Lions Sign Artose Pinner - Again

In a somewhat odd move, the Lions today signed running back Artose Pinner to a contract. Pinner played last year for the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons. In 2006, he played for the Minnesota Vikings. He played for the Detroit Lions in the 2003 - 2005 seasons.

Roy Williams Thankfully Still A Lion

For months leading right up to the draft, there were a lot of rumors swirling that the Lions wanted to trade Roy Williams. Millen and Marinelli steadfastly denied they were looking to trade Roy Williams but said they would listen to any and all offers on any player.

Lions Have Interesting NFL Draft

This weekend was draft weekend for the NFL draft. A time of the year when a team's faithful fans anxiously awaiting the coming of their team's savior. This year was no different for us Detroit Lions fans. Heading into the draft we had many needs to fill in order to improve on last years season. So, how do I think my beloved Lions did in this years draft? Lets get to the details.

Still On Vacation - Another LB Signed

Well, I am still on vacation until early next week - actually been sick for last three of four days, so it hasn't been much fun. Look for my offseason review by mid to late next week. Anyways, word comes that the Detroit has signed another linebacker, Alfred Fincher.

On Vacation, But Lions Sign a Linebacker

Sorry for the lack of posts lately, but I am currently in the middle of long needed vacation. I had hoped to get my report card on the Lions free agency season thus far up before I left, but unfortunately just ran out of time. I don't really see much chance to get it done while on vacation either. It will be near the top of my list once I return.

Lions Continue to Tweak the Roster

The Lions continue to tweak their roster and make minor changes during this mostly unimpressive free agency season. The Lions announced they have released safety Kenoy Kennedy and resigned DE Corey Smith.

Lions Release Kalimba and Jones

The Lions made a couple of more free agency moves yesterday. It was no surprise that they released Kalimba Edwards. The surprise of the day was that they released running back Kevin Jones. Both were once considered to be some of the key blocks around which the Lions would construct a winning team.

Lions Resign Tatum Bell

The Lions have announced they resigned Tatum Bell to a new one year $1.6M contract today. This was not unexpected news based on how free agency has gone for the Lions this year. However, I think it would have been unexpected if you had asked about this 2 or 3 months ago.
