College Football season is about here, and I have been thinking long and hard about who the Heisman could be this year. I put my mind to work and came up with my own list of the top 5 Heisman candidates along with some others to watch. You may agree or disagree but I would like to hear your guys comments and what you think. I have provided a little why I think they will win, and my prediction for the season based on last years stats.
1.
Tim Tebow QB, JR. Florida- There has been one man to win the Heisman twice, but the question is can Tebow join the club? In my opinon I think he can, he is only #1 on my list to begin with because he won the trophy last year, but his numbers this season won't be up where they were last year with the new depth at running back. Although he may not have as much success running the ball I feel he will have a better season passing the ball, and should improve his passing Touchdown numbers with a healthy
Percy Harvin. Tebow should get a fair amount of carries to have about 10-12 rushing TDs. If Tebow can lead his team to a BCS bowl game I believe he will take home the Heisman once again. Prediction- 3,600 Passing yards and 35TD, 500 rushing yards and 13TD.
2.
Knowshon Moreno RB, Soph. UGA- Only 1 RB has won the Hesiman since 2000, but Moreno is being compared to another Dawg winner in Herschel Walker. Although his line is not as strong as last year I still look for Moreno to have a spectacular season because of his talent, and running ability. Look for Moreno to take over this season and lead the Dawgs to the BCS title game and possibly the championship. The only question I have is how many votes with teammate Matt Stafford take away from him in the end. But in the end if Moreno and the Dawgs can go undefeated or 1 loss I believe that Moreno will take home the Heisman in a close race over Tebow and Wells. Prediction- 1,700 Rushing yards, and 18 TD.
3. Chris (Beanie) Wells RB, JR. OSU- Has been said to be the closest thing to Jim Brown as anyone has ever seen. Well let's hope he can have another great season ad follow up a breakout sophmore campaign. If Wells can avoid the little nagging injuires he had in the past and have some good weeks against against 5 pretty bad run defenses he should move up to #1 on my list and be on his way to dethroning Tebow. I think if he can help lead OSU to a win over USC he would be the easy frontrunner. Oh yeah and he's at a school that has produced plenty of Heisman candidates in the past. Prediction- 1,850 rushing yards and 17TDs.
4.
Michael Crabtree WR, SOPH, Texas Tech- No other WR in college football can ever come close to the numbers Crabtree put up last season and don't be surprised if his numbers are even better this season. He fits perfectly into TT system and is a smart reciever who could break a couple of records this season with another Heisman candidate passing to him in Graham Harrel. If Crabtree can help lead TT to a BCS bowl game and a good ranking he has a chance to take the Heisman, but he has the same problem Moreno has in Harrel could steal some of the votes. Look out for Crabtree but no WR has won the Heisman since Desmond Howard in 1991. Prediction- 2,100 yards and 27 TDs.
5.
Chase Daniel QB, SR. Missouri- My #5 spot was a toss up between Pat White and the guy I picked in Daniel. I went with Daniel because he may not be as exciting as White, but he has one thing that White doesn't have in
Jeremy Maclin. Daniel has the chance to lead his team to the Big 12 title, a BCS bowl game, and even the Championship game. Danile may be small for a QB but he puts up big numbers in Missouris spread offense, and his numbers should be even better this year. If Daniel can lead Missouri to a BCS bowl game and possibly the National championship game he could take home the Heisman after finishing 4th last season. Prediction- 4,500 passing yards and 37TDS.
Others to watch- Pat White, Matt Stafford,
Jeremy Maclin, Demarco Murray, James Laurenitas,
Sam Bradford,
Ian Johnson, P.J. Hill, Leshon McCoy,
James Davis/C.J. Spiller, and Ray Maulauga.
