Italy stun Argentina with a last minute win in Cordoba

Italian replacement Leonardo Ghiraldini scored a last minute try that set up a dramatic 13-12 victory over Argentina in Cordoba, stunning the hosts who had led for the entire match.

The game was dominated by the forwards and produced very little of the free flowing rugby that we were hoping to see from a young Italian side with nothing to lose, and the Pumas who are ranked third in the world, with star flyhalf Juan Martin Hernandez starting the match.

Referee Matt Goddard captured most of the attention though, giving 30 penalties during the match that was anything but the spectacle we had all anticipated. Perfect weather conditions didn't deter both teams from keeping it up front and turning it into, quite frankly, a boring game for the neutral.

The half time score of 12-3 had Argentina in control after two penalty kicks each from Hernandez and Bosch, to the one from Marcato.

Hernandez leaving the field with a wrist injury more than likely threw the home side off their game, with replacement Bosch later missing two penalties after Marcato reduced the deficit to six points in the 50th minute.

Argentina paid for those missed kicks after Italy surged forward and managed to drive over on the third attempt with Ghiraldini scoring the try that set up Marcato's vital match winning kick.

With the score at 12-11 to Argentina, the pressure on the Treviso flyhalf had no affect as he duly slotted the conversion, sparking celebrations amongst the jubilant Italians, and misery for the home team and crowd who must have been wondering just what went wrong.

Jean De Villers vs Sean Lamont - Huge Collision

Springboks vs Scotland in South Africa this year. The Boks launch a counter attack from their own 22, the ball gets to De Villiers as he gets totally blindsided by the big Scottish winger Sean Lamont. Lamont bounces off him, then De Villiers tosses the ball to a mate and falls over in pain. Spectacular collision.

De Villiers suffered a pretty bad rib injury from this. Lamont was fine.

Rob Howley's miraculous try to win the Heineken Cup 2004

Looking back on previous Heineken Cup Finals, the 2004 meeting between Wasps and Toulouse will forever be remembered for this moment of sheer brilliance by Rob Howley, but perhaps more significantly, the blunder by Clement Pointrenaud that ultimately divided the two best sides in Europe.

The game was heading for extra time as it came to a cliff hanging climax with the scores tied at 20 points all. Toulouse had taken a rather poor 22 drop-out and Howley was penned in close to the touchline, with little obvious room for manoeuvre.

Shrugging off his chronic wrist problem, he fielded the restart, swiveled and grubbered a teasing kick along the touchline. The kick was aimed more in hope than expectation as it bounced and bounced. Toulouse full-back Clement Poitrenaud waited and waited, clearly hoping it would end up harmlessly in touch. That final half-second of delay will trouble his sleep for many years to come.

By the time he reached to get half a hand on the ball Howley was swooping, snatching the ball from out of his grasp to touch down for what looked like a stunning try. The delirium around a packed Twickenham was put on hold for only a minute while the video referee deliberated, before giving the go ahead to award the try.

Toulouse were stunned, as well they should have been. Had their full-back not fatally dawdled in dealing with Howley's rolling kick, Toulouse might well have become the first side to win this tournament three times. Instead the ball stayed in play, Howley pounced and the rest is history.

"I wasn't sure whether he'd got a hand to it or whether I'd got downward pressure," admitted Howley. The TMO was in no doubt though.

Toulouse will be hoping this type of lack of concentration doesn't come back to haunt them when they take on Munster in Cardiff in this years Heineken Cup Final. I doubt it will, as this was a bizarre moment that will surely give Clement Poitrenaud nightmares till the day he dies.

Final Score: Wasps 27 Toulouse 20

Ali Williams plays superhero to break up a fight

All Black and Crusaders player Ali Williams, who is often seen as a villain on and off the field, is being hailed as a hero after breaking up a fight in Christchurch on the weekend.

Williams and a couple of team mates were out on the town after the Hurricanes game when trouble broke out.

"There was this group of 20 to 25 year olds all arguing... Then all of a sudden a brawl just started between about six people and then Ali Williams rushed up and saved the day," says eye witness Max Rooney.

The big lock, no stranger to off-field misbehaviour himself, is shown getting in amongst a group of five or six brawling young men, and stopping the fight.

All the action was captured on camera phone and released on ONE News evening edition.

Crusaders crowned Super-- champions 2008

The Canterbury Crusaders continued their dominance of southern hemisphere provincial rugby by securing their seventh Super title with a come from behind 20-12 win over the New South Wales Waratahs in Christchurch.

The Crusaders were down 3-12 late in the first half, but scored 17 unanswered points, largely thanks to the boot of All Blacks fly-half Dan Carter, who kicked four penalties and a drop goal for a personal tally of 15 points.

The Waratahs put in a brave performance but faltered on the big stage, allowing the experienced Crusaders to dominate in front of their home crowd, sending coach Robbie Deans, winger Caleb Ralph, and former captain Reuben Thorne out on a winning note.

This is just a quick montage from the game. In terms of short clips worth showing again, not too many to speak of. Lachlan Turner did score two great tries though so we may stick them up soon. Below is an image of Andrew Mehretens (formerly a crusader)

Australia A hold off late Japanese onslaught

Australia A won their opening IRB Pacific Nations Cup encounter against Japan, 42-21, in Fukuoka on Sunday. The Australians ran in six tries, including a brace to Brumbies lock Peter Kimlin, to overwhelm a gallant Japanese outfit and claim a bonus point in front of 7,493 fans.

Other tries to Van Humphries, Mark Gerrard, Morgan Turinui and Sam Norton-Knight capped off an impressive hit-out for coach Phil Mooney's team.

Australia led 35-3 at half-time, but were reduced to 13 men early in the second half after the sin-binning of Guy Shepherdson and Julian Salvi.

The loss of two players and travel fatigue showed which led to Japan coming to life after the break and cutting the deficit to 35-19 with a pair of tries by Tomoaki Taniguchi.

Despite the late effort, Peter Kimlin scored his second try of the match in the 70th minute to make it 40-21 and deflate the Japanese.

Australia A play Samoa in Apia on June 15 before returning to Australia to play three home matches against Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand Maori. Japan next faces Tonga on June--.

Matt Burke's 80 metre try from 1996

Wallaby legend Matt Burke will be returning to the NSW Waratahs, this time in the role of kicking coach for the 2009 season. Hearing the news of Burke's involvement in Australian rugby again made us think back to some of his great career highlights, and there were few better than this superb try he scored back in 1996.

There is little doubt that Burke is one of the most successful and respected international fullbacks of recent times, notching up the second highest all time points tally for an Australian Test player.

For the Waratahs he is the highest ever points scorer and the second highest capped player, with his illustrious Sydney career spanning from 1992 to 2004.

After an unfortunate fall out with their coaching staff in 2004 though, he left for the UK and had three enjoyable seasons with the Newcastle Falcons. Burke announced his retirement in May of this year after failing to properly recover from a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his knee after an injury he picked up in October.

So he's now returned to his beloved Waratahs, and will be the specialist kicking coach in the hope of contributing once again to the team he served so well for twelve years.

"It's good to be asked to be involved and hopefully I can add to some of the kicking skills and the back three work," said Burke.

Waratahs Head Coach Chris Hickey said the acquisition of Burke addresses a key element to the game.

"Kicking whether it be for points, territory or tactical reasons needs to be practiced and I can't think of many better in the field than Matt Burke," said Hickey.

"Matt will bring a great deal to the Waratahs both on and off the field."

So while the future looks rosy for Burke once again, we'll take a look back at one of the Wallaby's greatest ever Bledisloe Cup tries.

At Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane in July of '96, Burke went from a standing start to beat two tackles before accelerating away to beat Lomu, dummy Cullen, and put the foot down to score an unforgettable Tri Nations try.

The great moment will be etched in the memory banks and be forever synonymous with the Australian and Waratah legend that is Matthew Burke.

England Saxons off to a good start at the Churchill Cup

A hat-trick from winger Matt Banahan ensured England Saxons began their Churchill Cup campaign with a convincing win over the USA in Ottawa on the weekend.

The Saxons took a 24-10 half-time lead through two tries from Banahan and George Skivington, with Gavin DeBartolo touching down for the Eagles.

The visitors dominated the second half with scores from Anthony Allen, Banahan, Ben Foden and a penalty try.

And the last 10 minutes saw Tom Biggs and Ugo Monye adding further tries.

Fly-half Ryan Lamb had a fine game, kicking over eight conversions and adding a penalty, as well as pulling the creative strings in midfield.

The nine-try performance in humid conditions was the perfect start to the Saxons' tour of North America.

Note: This is unfortunately the only footage we have available at the moment, so while not perfect, it's still worth seeing if you're interested in following the Saxons' progress

Sharks beat Crusaders in the dying seconds

On Saturday the Sharks took on the Crusaders at Kingspark in a Super-- encounter that went down to the wire and will be remembered by Sharks fans for eternity.

Down by 6 points and with no time left on the clock, the Sharks got the ball deep in their own half. To win the game they'd need to score a try against the champion Crusaders, and convert it for the win.

Odwa Ndungane flew in for the winning try that set up the pressure kick for Ruan Pienaar. The rest, as they say, is history
