Suspension, Suspensions, and Wrist Slaps Oh My!

Well the suspensions have come down and I don't think too many people are happy. I personally don't think they were fair and I definitely don't think that throwing a punch after when you are in the center of the brawl constitutes one game.

WTF?

From my previous blog (if you read it), you know that I had Parker's back. I agreed with the way she reacted because that's how most people would, but I also THOUGHT that her reaction was going to suspend her 2 or 3 games. I didn't think that all of those players would be suspended, I thought some would be fined maybe. But Pierson getting 4 games to Parkers one is rediculous!

DMJ... you got lucky honey! DMJ clearly throws a punch at Mahorn.... a girlie ass punch, but a punch nonetheless, and only receives 1 game. And the dudes back was turned lol! Can we just tack a game on there for being pathetic!?

Bobbit... again they should tack on another game just for being an idiot! How you gonna hit the man and run like a scared lil girl!

Leslie.... Can we add a game for acting!!??

The league has basically said don't initiate escalate an altercation, but throwing a punch is fine? How does that even make sense?

So Taurasi.......... next time someone pisses you off, don't complain to the refs are talk shit about them after the game cause that gets you a 2 game suspension, instead just punch the chick that pissed you off, it's one less game! So knuckle up Dee! I'm waiting to see it!

And in this corner................

By this point everyone has seen the fight between the Shock and the Sparks the other night and everyone seems to have a different opinion on who started it and how bad it was for the league, women, etc.

To be honest Im totally into sports fights whether its in hockey, football, bench clearing in baseball, basketball, etc.... So for me I was totally into it.

Now there is something that I do hate, and that is when people say that female athletes should act like ladies. That seriously irks me. Why can't female athletes act like athletes. Like it or not sports are emotional and ego driven. Whether you are male or female when you are playing a sport you want to win, you do what it takes to win and you should be laying it all out on the playing field or court. And sometimes emotions run a little high and things happen... like fights.

I was actually like damn! now theres some raw, unadulterated emotion spilling out onto the court between players that had been at each other all night. You know there are many critics that say there is no emotion in womens basketball and that they just go through the motion and play by the basics at their simplest form. And the other night all of those same critics seen that womens basketball has that same intensity, the same emotion, the same passion. Was it good for the game? The league? Thats a matter of opinion. I think that showing non womens basketball fans that the passion is there was great, I think the league might actually pick up a few fans even if its based on hoping to see another "cat fight". But after seeing the way DMJ swung on Mahorn with that over head "girl punch" I was just waiting to see hair pulling and scratching lol! That was too funny. BUT ALSO, the only person that clearly threw a punch.

Everyone seen the situation between Parker and Pierson escalating and things were bound to explode. But to be honest, if I was Parker I would have done the same thing. They got tangled and Parker flung Pierson off of her, its almost like a natural reaction, however, what Pierson did afterwards was what triggered the brawl. When Pierson got up she stomped toward Parker knocking her back over with her body and Parker reacted......... just like most people would when emotion is already running high.

I'm not a Sparks fan AT ALL and definitely not a Lady Vols fan, but I can admit that I am a Parker fan and have been for awhile, and I do think that some of the vets are being haters on the kid and in some ways I feel like she has a target on her back. At the beginning of the season I told some friends and some of the other writers here at She's A Baller that Detroit would be the team that laid the smack down on Parker, and well, thats what happened.

All in all, I'm glad Parker stood up for herself and didn't get punked. I don't think Pierson thought that Parker was going to come right back at her. So when Parker did... seriously I jumped up like HELL YEAH! I'm not a pierson fan at all and I don't like the way she plays or the way she flops........

Speaking of flopping, Lisa Leslie. While I do agree that Mahorn should have been more concerned with getting a hold of his own players, I think that the "shove" he gave Lisa Leslie was no where near as dramatic as she made it appear. I feel like she put on an Oscar performance and I think that Mahorn was also in the heat of the moment and just wanted to keep her un-involved any further.

So now we all sit and wait to see what kind of penalties will be handed down and who will all face the suspensions and the fines. There are speculations as of right now but this is something the league wasn't ready to deal with - The Golden Child, Candace Parker getting into a brawl with one of the rougher players of the league.

So now the league has to be careful of how they handle this situation and not give Parker preferential treatment. She is the face of the league now and is taking it to new levels, but what is done is done and she need's to pay the price just like Pierson.

I will be surprised if Parker see's her suspension stretch into after the Olympic break because I believe the league is hoping that Team USA brings home gold and they will definitely want the Spark Olympians on the floor together to show off that medal. But I also feel that she deserves at least 3 games, her and Pierson both.

If it was up to me Parker, Pierson, and DMJ would get a suspension. Cause I know all of you seen DMJ run in there and attempt to hit Mahorn.... not that it did anything to him, but the fact is she swung. And for that matter so did Bobbit so I would at least fine her just for running away like a little sissy after she hit him! .... YES she hit him and ran away like she was getting away with something! WTF was she thinking? She doesn't get to use the 'heat of the moment' excuse, that was just pathetic!

And fines, I would definitely fine Mahorn for not keeping his head together and actually putting his hands on a player in an agressive way. I dont think that he meant for her to lose balance and fall, I think he just wanted her away and there was no malicious intent. Nolan for the great tackle on Parker, and if it was possible I would fine Leslie just for floppin like that!

Maybe I am just trying to make light of this situation because it is normal for scuffles to happen in sports and just because they are women doesn't mean they don't have the same drive, passion, and emotion as their male counterparts. If you are against the aggression and fighting in general then thats fine, but don't be pissed just because they are women. They are athletes.

Becky Hammon Gains Support and.... Anne Donovan is Still A Moron

The Olympics are getting closer and the Becky Hammon situation continues to heat up. It is now being brought up during every broadcast and ESPN and ABC have both ran segments or are scheduled to run segments. Bloggers and reporters alike are writing stories, fans are leaving comments, etc.

During halftime of the Storm/Silver Stars game on ABC, a segment was ran that showed USA Olympic coach Anne Donovan made these remarks: "If you play in this country, live in this country, and you grow up in the heartland and you put on a Russian uniform, you are not a patriotic person in my mind. If you'd slit my wrists, I'd bleed red, white and blue. Once you give up your jersey and your right or opportunity to try out for this Olympic team and you go someplace else, you've given up your right for people to think that was a smart decision."

When told of Donovan's remarks, Hammon shot back: "You don't know me. You don't know what that flag means to me. You don't know how I grew up. The biggest honor in our classroom was who could put up the flag, roll it up right, not let the corners touch the ground. Obviously we definitely define patriotism differently. True patriotism would be giving everybody a fair shot, an equal opportunity and to not play politics. That would be a very American and patriotic thing to do."

I have seen the support for Becky growing and growing since just a rumor of her playing for Russia started. And now that the decision has been made there are several categories of people that are involved in this whole thing. There are people that are dead set against it and call her every name they can think of including 'traitor' and 'unpatriotic'. Then there are people that don't really want her to do it but they support her decision. And there there are people like me, that are 100% supportive. Oh and of course you have the group of flip-floppers that say they don't care if she plays for Russia but if Russia happens to beat Team USA then Hammon will be hated and people in America won't forgive her................... WHAT?? Sore ass losers! Get a grip its a sport!

Not to mention that I am surprised by the amount of people who talk out of the side of their neck about this entire situation without knowing facts and swear up and down that she didn't even play with Team USA in 2006 and will argue that she turned them down then when they asked her to travel and play with them then. Get your facts straight people! She played with them in 2006, but Team USA was too far up other players asses to invite Hammon to a sanctioned event. (One that actually counts..... that's for the dummies reading this)

I've heard one of the lamest excuses from the older generation of people that are against it. It usually goes a little something like this.... "People from my generation......." Isn't this the same argument people use to condone and defend racism? Yes I just pulled a race card because anyone that uses the excuse "Well back in my day...." or "When I was growing up..." or anything in that form is just looking for an excuse to justify their lack of being able to mentally grow.

You can blame you being "old school" or from a generation that is from the cold war era, but fact is fact, Russia is no longer the enemy. It is time to let that whole thing about "my generation" go. The argument isn't valid in 2008.

Anne Donovan continues to be a dumbass and has called Hammon "unpatriotic" but has yet to give a real explanation as to why the 4 time All-star, the runner up MVP, and fan favorite, Becky Hammon has never been seriously considered for Team USA. Hammon traveled and played with Team USA in 2006, but it was for a non-sanctioned FIBA event. After that, Hammon became a non-factor in the eyes of Team USA.

In September 2007 when Team USA gathered in New York to begin training people were asking why Hammon wasn't there, despite lobbying comments from her WNBA coach Dan Hughes at his team's final post-game press conference during the WNBA Western Conference Finals. When asked about her absence, Donovan confirmed that Hammon had been considered, but would not go into further detail.

.......... Can you say shady??? Wouldn't it have been easy enough right then to say she turned it down? I believe that the reason Donovan didn't want to go into detail is because at that point she knew that it was complete bullshit that Hammon wasn't on the original list and she didn't think the Hammon question would come up when she had all these other "super stars" at her camp. Again, this is my opinion.

So why hasn't someone asked Anne-Donovan, since she is the one that likes to run her mouth so much, the right questions? People are too damn nice when they are talking to her. Someone needs to ask:

1. Why has Hammon never been asked to play in a FIBA Sanctioned event until September 2007 after it was known she just signed a long term deal with CSKA?

2. Why wasn't she on the original list of players in 2007?

3. Would you personally like to have seen Hammon in a Team USA uniform this summer in Beijing?

4. In September of 2007, when you were interviewed you said Hammon was considered but then refused to comment any further after that. Could you please comment on that now?

How is it even possible that Hammon has not played for a sanctioned event? Can you name 5 guards that have been better than Hammon in the past 3 years? Everyone would like to turn this into a Hammon vs. Bird argument and act like we Hammon supporters are saying Hammon should be on the team and not Bird. I personally think Bird NEEDS to be on the team and I have always said that, but I also feel like Hammon NEEDED to be on Team USA.

Hammon is aware that she is going to catch some heat for her decision, however, Hammon has also received an enormous amount of support. Fans, broadcasters, WNBA players, Russian players, and coaches have all come forward in support of her. Some have said they couldn't do it, but they understand why and they support her decision.

And I cannot help but wonder if Anne Donovan wants to strangle Sue Bird for her statement in support of Hammon. Bird said, "It's an interesting situation, it's tough. She could make our team, therefore everybody is making a big deal out of it. In a way I feel bad because she's going to have to deal with this the entire season. She's explained her side so I know where she's coming from and I don't think she's unpatriotic. [But] it is going to be weird to see her in a Russian jersey in what could be the gold-medal game. I think there's going to be a lot of different sides saying a lot of different things. But if the question is, 'Is she a good enough basketball player to make our team?' The answer is, 'Absolutely.' "

Teammate in Russia and in San Antonio, Edwige Lawson-Wade says, ""I think it's good, I played in Russia for four years and those girls are so sweet. Becky is so nice, too, so she's going to be just fine there. And their team is going to be good."

After MVP Lauren Jackson heard the recent comments made by Anne Donovan, she said "That would be something that Anne would probably say. But I don't think that way at all. She's not a traitor by any means, obviously didn't know the business parameters behind the decision before using 'such harsh words'. "Being an Olympic athlete myself, I think Becky and I are coming at it from two completely different perspectives. She's got this opportunity that a lot of people don't get and I support her in whatever she decides to do. I think Becky's a great player and she hasn't had the opportunity to play for the United States. My dream, as a kid, was to play for Australia in the Olympic Games. I love my country and I'm so patriotic, I would wear a flag on my forehead if I could. But I like Becky. I can understand what she's thinking. I empathize with her, and it is a very difficult decision and people will bag her and put her down and say things."

Nancy Leiberman has also offered up support for Hammon and her decision saying, "It is a little bizarre to me that she has never played on a USA team. That is mind boggling to me. Over the last two years, you can't name five players better than Becky Hammon. She has raised her game and done it with class and dignity. I don't think her dream was to play for Russia in the Olympics, but you have to take the opportunity where and when it comes. Whatever Becky does, I support. How can you fault somebody when someone is giving you this incredible opportunity? They're getting a superstar. Russia was good without her. They're going to be even better with her."

Carol Callan, an executive with USA Basketball who previously had declined to speak on the record about Hammon's bid to make the U.S. squad said, "If we didn't think she could make the Olympic team ultimately, we would not have invited her. Everyone in the pool has a legitimate shot (to make the Olympic team)...it's up to each person who's invited to decide whether they want to do that or not, and so again, Becky's decision was basically up to her."

In September, USA Basketball expanded the list to more than 30 names. Hammon was invited to try out just days before training camp began. Hammon believes that the invite was a courtesy invite and so do I and many other fans. People began to question why Hammon wasn't on the original list and Team USA covered their own asses by giving her a last minute invite to say "Oh we invited her but she turned us down."

She knew that if she accepted the invitation and participated in international play for the United States, she would greatly diminish the value of her Russian contract, one of the most lucrative in women's basketball. Essentially, she says was choosing between a guaranteed seven-figure contract and the long odds of making the U.S. team.

"Why should I take that chance for a really, really long shot and pass up four years of playing over in Russia?" Hammon asks. "I couldn't do that financially."

Hammon makes the maximum WNBA salary, approximately $95,000. Her Russian team pays her six times that much. Knowing that her character and her patriotism would be questioned in America, Hammon (and her agent Mike Cound) made sure it was worth the trouble. In March, she signed a four-year deal worth well more than $2 million. By agreeing to dual citizenship, Hammon nearly tripled her salary. "There's nothing more American than taking advantage of an opportunity," she said, smiling. If Hammon leads the Russians to a silver medal, she'll receive an additional $150,000 in bonus money. For gold, she'll earn $250,000.

Lieberman told Hammon to "just tell everybody you made a business decision," and Hammon acknowledges that money played a role. But ultimately, the opportunity to play on the Olympic stage was too compelling to pass up, and Hammon admits she would have chosen to play for Russia even without financial incentives rather than sit out the Olympics entirely.

"Yes, I would've done it. It hasn't been about the money," she said. "The money to me is icing on the cake, it's a nice bonus, it's what I get paid to do."

Some of Russia's most prominent players said that they initially were opposed to having an American on their national team. The team's star, Maria Stepanova, said, "We thought we could manage on our own." But after getting to know Hammon as a teammate in the Russian league, Stepanova -- who played for the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury from 1998-2001 and then again in 2005 -- is a believer and a fan of Hammon's. "She will help us at the Olympic Games. Practically, she is almost like a Russian. She has mentality similar to ours."

Added Russian teammate Ilona Korstin: "When we play the world championship and the Olympics, we miss something. We were very close, but we never won the gold medal, so I think this something is a good point guard. This something is Becky."

Becky sums it up like this:

"When I was a little girl there was no WNBA, so the Olympics was the highest thing and, in my opinion, it's still the highest thing in basketball. It's the ultimate prize. And the dream of playing in the Olympics is something I've carried around with me for 30 years.

There has been a lot of soul searching over this decision, but now I'm just going to be at peace with it, enjoy the moment and take the whole experience in. "If I had been a serious contender for the U.S. team I would have played with them at some point, in a FIBA event, or would have been on their list of 20 -some players, I wasn't. It just wasn't meant to be, but that's all right with me.

This door was open to me, and in my mind, the U.S. was never open to me. I just feel everything's working out the way it's supposed to work out. This is not a business decision for me. That's not the reason I'm doing it. Yes, I'm a basketball player and that's my business. But I've never been one to sit life out on the sidelines, and I've got this one shot at the Olympics, so I might as well take the shot. I don't expect everybody to understand, or jump on my bandwagon.

I know how I feel about my country. I'm very proud of what America represents to the world. But this is a basketball game. This is not life or death. The real heroes are over in Iraq and Afghanistan. I'm playing a game. I think the Olympics are about unity. Bringing all the countries together. It's not about going out there and beating everybody up. It's supposed to encompass the spirit of sportsmanship. I kind of let everybody just say what they want to say, and I'm comfortable knowing what I know in my heart. I have courage. I have strength. I can sleep at night. I rest on my faith alone, not on Anne Donovan's opinion or anybody else's opinion.

The decision on so many levels doesn't make sense to a lot of different people. That's OK. It makes perfect sense to me. I'm sure it might be awkward a little bit, at first, but once the ball goes up we're just playing basketball. I'm going to do what I can do to get my team organized. It'll be a competition, just what the Olympics are about, it'll be about competition. And if it comes down to us and the U.S., I'll be playing to win. And I wouldn't have made that decision if I couldn't say that honestly."

Lieberman believes that the decision to play for Russia could damage both Hammon's marketability and perhaps her popularity in San Antonio. "My greatest concern is the imaging piece of this; she will no longer be looked at as the All-American girl," Lieberman said. "She could be looked at as a spoiled athlete that didn't get her chance to make the USA team and took her ball and went somewhere else. I wouldn't ever want anybody to think of her as a traitor."

Hammon laughs at the notion that she might lose endorsements. "I don't have Glamour Magazine or American Express or Coca-Cola knocking on my door trying to endorse me anyway. I'm still an American girl. I'm not over here selling secrets to the Russians. This is not espionage. This is a game of basketball. We are not at war with Russia. The Cold War is over."

Hammon expects some backlash. But she says she's not afraid of having her reputation "tarnished."

Lieberman isn't the only one that believes Becky will not recover from the decision. Bloggers and writers and some fans believe that also. But I don't think she has to worry about recovery. She is an athlete and her peers are athletes and they all understand the competitive drive the business side of things. Becky is a very likable person she has a tremendous fan base and very loyal fans (shoutout to the Hammonites) and she will be fine with whatever she chooses to do with her life after basketball.

She isn't the first athlete to gain citizenship and play for a different country and she wont be the last. Hakeem did it for basketball, and in hockey Brett Hull wasn't selected for Team Canada and got a US Citizenship and played with Team USA. America likes it when top athletes swing their way but cant seem to handle it when a top American athlete goes somewhere else.

And if when Becky is 50 and retired and some people only remember her for playing for Russia then they aren't basketball fans.

But until then, GO HAMMON GO!

By the way, since people want to turn this all political, they shouldn't be protesting Becky playing for Russia, they should be pissed off that the games were awarded to China. Now, that's an issue!

Note: Though the Russian National Team will begin training camps June, but Hammon will not miss any of her WNBA San Antonio Silver Stars games. Hammon earned her spot on the Russian team with her play in the Russian league.

Tennessee Needs To Let It Go

Word has it that someone in Tennessee has applied for (FOI) Freedom of Information rights to the documents on file with the NCAA regarding the secondary violations UConn self-reported in the Maya Moore case.

Let it go!! Jeez!

And everyone seems to be all up in UConns ass about all this, why dont someone ask Pat why exactly she ended the series and keep on her ass until she gives a real answer. And while they are at it, why dont they check the documents regarding Maya Moore to see if in fact she was the one that has been having hissy fits and trying her hardest to get UConn in some kind of trouble??

And in the meanwhile while Tennessee and Pat are still going ape shit over all of this, the NCAA has concluded its investigation concerning the involvement of the UConn women's basketball program for arranging a tour of ESPN for Maya Moore and her mother in 2005.

UConn was admonished for a "secondary violation" for inadertantly arranging what's' considered an improper benefit for Moore, who was then a junior at Collins Hill High in Suwanee, Ga. "Concerning the recent reports relating to our women's basketball program, the University of Connecticut maintains a strong commitment to NCAA rules compliance," the university said in a prepared statement. "After learning of allegations last year, the University and the NCAA have completed their review of all the facts andcircumstances.

"This review resulted in a self-reported secondary violation. The institution worked cooperatively with the Association and information was recently submitted following standard NCAA procedures. The University and the NCAA now consider this matter closed."

UConn would not say what the penalty for the violation was, but similiar incidents in the past have resulted simply in a letter of reprimand placed in the school's file.

The incident was originally reported by ESPN last week. The Southeastern Conference, on behalf of Tennessee and the University of Georgia, filed on a complaint against UConn for its action. ESPN has since cancelled future tours for student-athletes.

Hammon For Russia

So it is becoming highly publicized that Becky Hammon has received her Russian citizenship and is now eligible to play for Russia in the Olympic team. The Russian coach Igor Grudin has already stated his intention to call her up for the preparation camp.

Now there are all kinds of people calling her traitor, saying it's bad for her career. The Olympics are not war! Let's get that straight first. It's sports. No one seems to have a problem with her playing overseas in Russia right now. No one had a problem with her playing in the FIBA championships and spanking Team USA, so why now?

It's this patriotic bulls!t that everyone is on. But regardless.... its the Olympics. No one had an issue when Hakeem Olajuwon became a naturalized citizen to play with Team USA!

I think the USA Olympic Committee is trippin in the first place for not just saying "YO BECK YOU ARE ON THE ROSTER!"

How does Becky Hammon... runner up for MVP last year not get on the roster?

There have been people saying that she rejected Team USA's offer, but Becky did go to train with Team USA for evaluation and training for the 2008 Olympics and then when they asked her back she was already committed to something else and why break one commitment when you are pretty sure the coaching staff is going to go with the ones they already have anyway? I mean I was actually surprised when they invited JMac and god was I happy to see her show and prove!

Kelly Miller has already said she would play for Russia if the invite was extended. Deanna Nolan is also eligible.

But let's not forget about the hefty paycheck the Russians would be willing to pay for one of their services! I mean for the most part yes, Hammon and Nolan are getting paid decent wages, but not when you look at other pro athletes and compare them pound for pound. And Russia is throwing serious cash around.

But everyone seems to be worried about what Hammon is going to do.

Is it the girl next door image?

And by the way, how does Nolan not get on the Team USA roster???

I think about the college tour Team USA had in the fall and I wonder how people like Jamie Carey got on the roster but Nolan and Hammon didn't. Makes no sense to me. Commitments to the side, I think Team USA just wasn't and isn't feeling Hammon nor Nolan for this roster.

Becky Hammon (and Deanna Nolan for that matter) should be a given for Team USA just like Bird, Taurasi, & Parker. But instead it seems as if the Olympic Committee has decided that they want to give Lisa Leslie and Swoopes another shot. COME ON MAN!

AND by the way.............. is Maya Moore eligible to compete with the Olympic team?? LOL Lets get her! But then again.... this is the Olympic Committee we are talking about, they probably won't recognize her talents until 2012!

Team USA's Struggles In International Competition Is A Good Thing!

Is the fact that Team USA struggling in international competition a good thing for womens basketball overall?

I personally think it is. I think that other countries coming up and able to compete and beat Team USA says that womens basketball is going to a higher level.

Of course we, the Americans, love seeing Team USA win, but if there is no other competition in the world is there a reason to compete at all?

I think back to the 2006 winter Olympics and how the womens hockey always came down to Canada and the USA. The Olympic Committee was actually thinking about removing the sport from the Olympics until the competition was better. Well in 2006 Sweden upset the American team and won the silver medal as Canada took gold and the USA ended up with bronze. Needless to say, the competition picked up and womens hockey has remained an Olympic sport.

So with that being said, I think that Team USA's struggles and losses help womens basketball on every level. We want the womens game to gain popularity worldwide because then we as fans will get to see more basketball on tv, the players will start to get more opportunities to do commercials, tv spots, sponsors, etc.

I have heard a lot of people ask why there are american women going overseas to play ball......... money! For the most part most (maybe even none) of these women will play on a national team against the USA in the Olympics, but they are overseas because the money is good and what a better way to stay in shape for your WNBA season than playing ball during your offseason. The Americans will be facing some over their WNBA counter parts in the Olympics and Australia has become a powerhouse with Lauren Jackson and Penny Taylor. So we know that the USA will have competition in the Olympics in 2008.

Team USA Falls to CSKA Moscow in Championship Game

Despite receiving 18 points and nine rebounds from Janel McCarville (New York Liberty), the USA Basketball Women's Select Team's (3-2) shots wouldn't fall and it suffered a disappointing 75-65 loss to CSKA Moscow (4-1), one of Europe's top pro teams, on Saturday night in Ekaterinburg, Russia. The USA also received eight points and 10 rebounds from Taj McWilliams-Franklin (Los Angeles Sparks) in the 2007 FIBA World League Tournament's championship game.

"This was a disappointing loss," said USA and Seattle Storm head coach Anne Donovan. "We knew we had to hold them to a lower scoring output and we did that, we kept them in the mid-70's, but we just couldn't put the ball in the hole very well tonight. I don't know if it was fatigue or the fifth game in six days, but we just didn't play our best that's for sure. Offensively we didn't make shots, we had some turnovers at the wrong times when we were trying to make a run. It just wasn't our night."

CSKA built a 17-14 lead following a first quarter battle. Receiving three treys from Spaniard Amaya Valdemoro, MVP of the 2007 FIBA Europe Championship, CSKA expanded that to a 10-point, 32-22, advantage four minutes into the second quarter.

"Today's game was tough," said Sue Bird (Seattle Storm), who had nine points, four assists and was awarded the trophy as the best guard of the tournament. "They came out very aggressive and they forced us into a lot of turnovers early on and they were able to run on those. That really set a tone for them. For us, it wasn't our best game, but we never gave up. We kept coming back, trying to cut the lead. We just got into a hole early and weren't able to dig ourselves out of it."

The USA, which committed seven of its 11 turnovers in the first half, called a time out following Valdemoro's third three. Returning to the court with a determined focus, the Americans strung together eight straight points, four coming from McCarville, and narrowed the deficit to two points, 32-30, with 3:42 to play before halftime.

However, each time the U.S. began fully firing on all cylinders and making a run, CSKA countered. This time it was a pair of Russian Olympians, Ilona Korstin and Maria Stepanova, who scored four apiece to close out the half on an 8-3 spurt and give their squad a 40-34 edge at the midway break.

CSKA, behind six points from Stepanova, reeled off eight unanswered points to open the second half. Katie Smith (Detroit Shock) drained her second three of the game to break the scoring drought and start an 11-4 run by the Americans that cut into CSKA's double-digit lead, 52-45, with 14:40 to play in the game.

Again CSKA stabbed back and by the end of the third quarter the USA trailed 64-52. No matter how hard they tried, the Americans were only able to close to eight points, 66-58, with a little more than five minutes remaining. CSKA, however, was as sharp as a team gets and netted back-to-back 3-pointers. The determined Americans would not give up, getting the score back to single digits, 63-72 with two minutes to go. But time was not on their side as CSKA Moscow took the win and the tournament title.

"It's just USA Basketball," said McCarville on the USA's determined effort. "I don't think any one of us wanted to give up at any point in that game. All the way down to the wire everybody thought we had a chance and anything could have happened. We know to play through the runs and give it our best from tip to finish."

The USA's shooting woes resulted in the team's worst shooting performance of the tournament as the squad shot 34.8 percent for the night, while CSKA Moscow connected on 42.4 percent of its attempts from the field. The USA was also outrebounded 43-32, but only had 11 turnovers while forcing the Russian pro squad into 18.

Stepanova and Korstin scored 16 points apiece, while Ann Wauters had 11 points and 15 rebounds.

In today's other games Basketball Club Havana (2-3) edged TEO Vilnius (2-3) 78-73 to take seventh place, MiZo Pécs 2010 (2-3) finished fifth with a 73-38 thumping of Canberra Capitals (1-4) and host UMMC Ekaterinburg (4-1) took third after defeating CBA Beijing (2-3) 84-76.

Future #1 Pick Candace Parker Dunks In Practice

Just two days removed from an x-ray on an injured right shoulder, Tennessee star Candace Parker felt good enough to dunk during the Lady Vols practice on Friday.

UT coach Pat Summitt was talking to Jenny Moshak, the Lady Vols associate athletics director for sports medicine, when Parker threw down during a shooting drill. Summitt recounted Moshak turned to her and matter-of-factly saying, "Her shoulder must be OK"

Must be. The only discomfort Parker was feeling was embarrassment.

"She came over and said, 'I forgot,' " Summitt said. "We all started laughing."

While Parker is feeling better, two other Lady Vols are not. Freshman Kelley Cain, who is recovering from a concussion suffered a week, did some conditioning work with Moshak and strength & conditioning coach Heather Mason, but then didn't feel good enough to practice.

The downtime is amounted to valuable practice time lost for the 6-foot-6 center. Tennessee's exhibition opener is Nov. 4 against the U.S. national team.

"The good thing is she's smart," Summitt said. "She has a good feel for the game. She seems to be a quick learner. It's getting her behind physically."

McCarville is a BEAST! and Candace Parker... please dont go! :p

Team USA.... they got beat today, but, Janel McCarville!!! Thats all I can say!! If she dont get a ticket to Bejing Im going to flip out lol! She is a beast! She is playing with the best players in the world and shining!!! Almost makes me want to become a Liberty fan!!!

So the WNBA Draft took place and the LA Sparks get the #1 pick. Question now is, does Candace Parker leave early?

I hope not! I dont want to see Parker in LA, thats a personal opinion. I mean I think her career could branch off in a thousand directions in LA .... but not the Sparks!!! Just not what I wanted to see.

Pro's -

LA - great city

Sidney Spencer & Fluker - playing with Vols she is familiar with

......... thats all I got for Pros lol!

Cons -

LA - horrible traffic lol

Sheldon - He is all the way in ATL

Cooper --- BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Parker herself says: ""I'm looking at it one day at a time, I'd rather leave it at that. If you get caught up in the future, your mind gets to wandering."

It's hard to ignore her future after another successful stint with USA Basketball last month and with the Olympics looming next year. And then there's the impending nuptials as well.

And if you ask Pat Summit: "All indications with where she (Parker) is, the timing of everything, there's obviously a good chance we'll see one more year from Candace."

This draft we will see ... maybe Parker.....(not the Sparks baby), but for sure Fowles, Wiggins, Humphrey, Langhorne, Ajavon... and I could keep going.

I think this season other players can step up and steal the spotlight and move up in the draft, so I am anxiously awaiting the season to start! GO UCONN! :p

WNBA: Atlanta Franchise & Candace Parker

Well it looks like tomorrow, (October 17th) the WNBA will announce that Atlanta will have an expansion team and it looks like Teresa Edwards could be the head coach..... that would be perfect I think since she went to Georgia and is a local star there and has coaching experience, not to mention has been in 5 Olympics!

So this means expansion draft so the WNBA will look a lot different next season but it will definitely be good for the league.

I think Atlanta will be a good WNBA city if they can get their fans involved the same way that other cities such as Phoenix and Seattle have (Im not saying all cities dont do it, those are just the two that stand out to me). Atlanta has a lot of women sports fans, a lot of colleges, a lot of hype... it will work.

I am also hearing that Atlanta wants in the draft lottery... you know owners arent too happy about that! Everyone wants a shot at landing the #1 pick and getting Parker.

I personally hate that Parker could end up in LA, but thats just me. I mean even that has its pro's and cons. Parker in LA could skyrocket the WNBA because Hollywood (singing Beyonce's part on the Jay-Z Hollywood track - "Ooh it's the lights (You blinded by the) Action! (You need that) Hollywood"), yeah Hollywood is right there and Parker has the potential to take things to a WHOLE NUVA LEVEL! Lets face it, CP was listed as one of People Magazines 100 Most Beautiful People.

But think about Parker in Atlanta. Not too far from Tennessee so she can pull fans from there, and well, Sheldon is there so it would be a perfect fit for her. So in all reality Im pulling for some miracle to happen and Candace end up in Atlanta! What a way to start a franchise!

All wishful thinking? Probably so on the CP3 being in Atlanta, but hey, stranger things have happened....... Margo Dydek's pregnant!

THE WNBA NEEDS HYPE

Well the WNBA season is over and it ended just the way I knew it would. Dee finally getting her ring! The Phoenix Mercury won the WNBA Championship and did it with class. And Damn did Mazz step up or what!! JEEEZ! (And she got a parade!)

But anyway, the WNBA, where is the hype? Seriously the Mercury should have been on some of the big talk shows, or at least put DT on there because she has more entertainment talent than most people on TV anyway!!! But the Mercury won the championship and had a celebration in Phoenix. No Tonight Show, no Letterman, no The View, no Ellen.... nothing.

If any other sport/athlete would have won a championship they would have been somehwhere on national television, but not the WNBA.

I guess I have to wonder about who is to blame for it, is it the WNBA, is it media, is it agents, players, fans? Well I have to take the blame off the players because I would bet my life that DT could go onto Leno and be amazing and even pull more fans into the world of womens basketball. DT is a funny chick! The fans...., you cant blame us, you know we want to see it! So, is the mainstream media just not there? Are agents not taking their women clients as serious? Or does the WNBA just not know what its following is looking for?

Maybe its a variety of things.

Do we have to have Pierson biting off someones ear, Hammon using human growth hormones, or LJ getting a DUI for some coverage????

Out of all the sports right now the WNBA is always positive, I mean sure we got Goon Ball in Detroit (yeah I said it! lol) but other than that the WNBA is positive basketball at its highest level.

So where is the coverage? Where is the hype? Im starving here!

Taurasi is the BEST thing in womens basketball.... period!

As I watched the footage of the WNBA Champions the Phoenix Mercury arrive at the airport I watched as the team came through the screaming fans, hi fives all the way through, but then here came DT... full of life, full of energy, hi fiving fans, shaking hands, hugging fans, signing autographs, stopping for pictures and to jump on anyones recording that had a video camera. DT doesnt stop giving back to basketball or to her fans. DT is what the WNBA needs to promote, DT is what the WNBA needs to hop on and ride because her personality alone can carry the league some distance.

Why do we love DT? Her emotion! It is all right there for you to see, if she is pissed you know it! If she is happy, you know it! If she is acting goofy, you see it. We love that DT is quick to show how pissed she is at calls and non-calls, we love to watch video clips of DT being silly, and whether you are a Mercury fan or not, you love to see DT play the game. We love to see DT be DT.

DT has always showed that raw passion for ball. Look back at her UConn days and you see it, it has just grown into something fierce now. So I am going to go ahead and say REPEAT right now lol!

So this has turned into a PRO-TAURASI blog with the quickness! But I cant help that, because I know that if someone would have made the Leno show or Letterman happen then it would have benefited the league in so many ways. Shit where is Arsenio Hall when you need him! lol!
