So theJman was filming a new video for the Quarterfinals and my computer has failed. Going to have to take it to the Apple store to have the harddrive pulled off.
So right now I'm sitting in a FedEx Kinkos in Round Rock typing this out and since I'm paying by the minute I'm going to make it quick.
I know it's been a while since I've posted but things have been pretty hectic around here and TheJman had to handle the business because the business isn't going to handle itself.
Since I've missed the last two Weekly Picke 'Ems, TheJman has stepped up his game and brings the picks to you live and direct. Let's do this . . .
Because 'Freedom' isn't free. God bless all those who have given the greatest sacrifice and those who put themselves in harms way to protect our way of life.
Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friend - John 15:13
To learn more about Sergeant James J. Regan: http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/jjregan.htm
So this is going to be about as quick as it gets. The wife and I just got back from the Round Rock Express game, where the Express won in the 9th inning on a walk off . . . walk. That has to be one of the worst feelings knowing that you just gave the opposing team a free win. Kind like that Memphis kid who missed three free throws in a row a few years ago in the NCAA tourney.
I won't lie, I'm beat. It's been a really long day and I have to be up really early tomorrow morning to go work a youth lacrosse clinic at UT. So here are the picks, sans fluff and follow up.
Navy over Army
Georgetown over Loyola
Maryland over Hopkins
Duke over Virginia
North Carolina over Ohio State
Princeton over Harvard
UMBC over Albany
*I honestly think that UMBC can win but was willing to go to the grave with Albany until I saw that Terry had officially jumped shipped. Fingers crossed.
So here's hoping for a rebound week. I'll post more later, but right now I'm gonna grab some ZZZ's.
What's going on YB? Hope everyone's had a good week. I'm sure we're all ready for the weekend. I know I am, been a lot going on here. So last weekend was no doubt the worst Pick'em week I've had, a despicable 2-5, and the JV boys took a hard one on the chin from Plano West on Sunday.
Young players, please read this carefully: Custom gloves, team apparel and shiny uniforms won't make one team better than another. If you go into a game with the mindset that you're just hoping to make it through, don't even put the helmet on because you've already lost. Did Rocky have the flash and flair that Apollo did? No, and I think we all know how that one turned out. (Well in the second one I guess)
But its ok, the boys played great last night, shutting out Westwood in the 4th quarter and putting in 4 straight goals to win 8-7!! Great job guys!
**On a side note: if you're interested in getting custom apparel and performance wear for you team (like Plano West), you can contact me at jason@njssports.com.**
But enough of about that, its rivalry week and the Jman has got a few rivalry bones of his own to pick.
So for those who didn't know, Inside Lacrosse was gracious enough to invite the Jman to be a special guest on the Weekly Staff Pick 'Em last week. A sincere Thank you to the boys at IL
Besides Mikey Culver (4-3), just about everyone took a beating going under .500. Well I think we have all seen that Terry "The Pretty Boy" Foy has been well off the mark all season. So this week, The Pretty Boy is looking to pass the buck on his sub par performance to the Jman.
Sorry P/B, I'm sitting at 26-19 right now and 32-20 overall, putting me right up there with Brand, Burnsie and Sweeney, and well within striking distance of Culver. I have to applaud your UNC pick last week, but you see when you're actually in the hunt you have to make the smart decisions and can't just throw away picks on hopeful flukes. It's ok Terry, I know you're just irritated with the way your season has gone, but you can't let frustration fouls put you in a man down situation (A throw back to "Pinch'in and Popp'in, nod your way Mr. Keegan)
And once again the Jman pulls ahead!
TheJman - 4
Pretty Boy - 3
So let's get to the games:
Bucknell v Army
Both teams have been playing well as of late. But Army's wins over Hofstra/Rutgers and the close loss to Syracuse are a little more impressive than the Bison's win over Towson and Ohio State.
Edge Army
Navy v Maryland
I wish I could pick the Mids in this one, but I have just been too impressed with the Terps youth right now.
Edge: Maryland
Lehigh v Colgate
Despite Colgate's recent losing streak, the most quality win that Lehigh has had this season was against Villanova.
Edge: Colgate
Notre Dame v Denver
Despite the rankings I think that this one could go either way. It will be decided by who can play their game. Notre Dame wants order, Denver wants Chaos. Denver has to stay out of the penalty box.
Edge: Notre Dame
Princeton v Syracuse
The Orange have played great so far and Princeton has rebounded from the 2 goal showing against the Danes. Game tempo will decide the winner.
Edge: Syracuse
Virginia v North Carolina
There is a reason that UNC struggled against Maryland and Duke. The attack couldn't get into the game and they forced the middies to have to carry the scoring load. Dom and the boys will be looking to exploit that and get out of Chapel Hill with a win.
Edge: Virginia
Hopkins v Duke
Duke jumps all over the Jays, Rabil falls out of the hunt for a Tewaaraton and probably the NCAA tourney.
Edge: Duke
So there you have it, hoping for a much better weekend and to make up some ground on the leaders. The Jman and the big dog are going to have a boy's night in tonight and catch the Navy v Maryland game. JV travels to cross town rival Westlake Sunday hoping to continue the district winning streak.
Have a safe weekend and I'll see you on the field.
What's going on YB? I hope everyone is having a good week so far, it's Wednesday so we're halfway to the weekend and it's already been a busy week so far. My JV boys had a big game against Cedar Park last night and we came out with a 6-1 win. We have made great strides in learning about the benefits of good ball movement and possession time, now we just need to work on shot placement. If I had a dollar for every one we put on the goalie's chest I'd be writing this from my time share in the Caymans. But I'm proud of them and I'm glad they are reaping the rewards of their hard work. You can check out the team site at http://www.andersontrojanlacrosse.com/
So last weekend was a monkey wrench! Big wins, big upsets and good times at the casa (I do love ESPNU).
Reparations:
- Do I think that missing Walterhoefer caused the Tarheel offense to struggle? Not really. Michael J. did just fine, winning more than 50% of the face offs. You can't have 6+ mins of penalties!
- Beware of the Terp offense. The veteran midfield has shortened the learning curve for their young attack and they are setting the example of how to win.
- When you lose almost twice as many ground balls as you win. . . . you're going to lose. If someone could please see to it that Harvard gets the memo.
- I'm so glad that Albany waited until this weekend to turn it on. I will not lie in admitting that if the Princeton game had been a pick I probably would have bet against the Danes. Congrats on the win.
- I'd be interested in getting my hands on Danowski's stick. If you want to tell me that his pocket's too deep or the heads too pinched, I'd buy that. But to say that the reigning Tewaaraton winner would be careless enough to chop a stick down to below 40 inches, I'd have to see it to believe it.
- Miles Kass: Unorthodox? Maybe. Ridiculous? Absolutely!
Perfection:
I would like to congratulate my wife, Mrs. Jman, who went a perfect 7-0 this week! The last few weeks she's been quietly putting together a quality record and picking some of the big upsets; including Fairfield over Dartmouth and Maryland over Georgetown. Way to go babe, I'm so proud of you. *Terry, has anyone else gone 7-0 this season? Maybe Dixon needs to schedule a conference with her before he submits this week's picks.*
We've got some big games this week, so let's get after it
UMass @ Penn State
I was hopeful for the Minutemen at the start of the season, a good start, a few loses and then back in the win column, but it's looking as though the lack of offensive production is starting to take its toll. PSU has put up some big number in a few of their games, but Drew and Co. have been fantastic, averaging less than 5 goals against per game. I expect the reigning ECAC Goalie of the Year to continue his hot streak
Edge: Penn State
Virginia @ Maryland
The Terps have shown that they can get it done against even the topped ranked defensive units. Both Young and Catalino will be familiar with what it'll take to beat Ghitelman. The Bratton's made a statement against Hopkins and (not like they were before) are no longer flying under the radar. I haven't been impressed with either teams face off units. Shooting percentage will weigh more heavily than possession time in this one.
Edge: Virginia
Georgetown @ Navy
The Hoyas did everything right against Duke. They shut down Greer, they scored on Man-up and the midfield is finally getting in sync. My unsung hero was Andrew Baird, great on the ride and can get open to shoot. This is the first big test for the Mids since Cornell. They need to push transition and keep the Hoyas middies on the field. Both of these teams can go deep to keep the legs fresh. I give the advantage to the Brendan Cannon and the Hoyas attack.
Edge: Georgetown
North Carolina @ Hopkins
In a rematch of last years shoot out in Chapel Hill, both teams are looking to rebound from tough loses. It's make or break time for Hopkins! One more overtime loss and Petro's head will literally explode. The Bluejays are stacked with guys who know how to win the close ones and they've been playing very well as a team, they just need to "finish the drill". Carolina will need to figure out how to get possession in order to control game tempo. Shane, you feeling any better yet?
Edge: Hopkins
Loyola @ Syracuse
16 saves aside, if 31 shots yields 4 goals there is a serious problem. But they Hounds rebounded from their loss to Siena by shooting 15 of 32 (10 saves for UMass) against the Minutemen. I think that Syracuse has hit their stride over this 3 game stretch and despite the big numbers that Loyola put up last week, I don't see that happening against the Orange.
Edge: Syracuse
Hofstra @ Drexel
These are two teams that have been really impressive this year, but if you look at the quality of wins you have to give the edge to the Pride. Despite their current skid, a win over Hopkins is still a win over Hopkins, I don't care who you are. Even in their loss to Princeton, they played well and were very crisp. Have to go with quality play over records in this one
Edge: Hofstra
Providence @ Siena
This is a hard one; you can never be sure about those pesky MAAC teams. Despite winning its last two games (after dropping 5 straight to open the season), the most impressed I've been with the Friars is a 6-8 loss to UNC. A 17-15 loss to Stony Brook and wins over Harvard and Loyola put the Saints in position to make a run for the Metro Atlantic title and a tournament AQ.
Edge: Siena
So there you have it. Hopefully The Jman will be posting better than a 3-4 come Monday morning.
Plano West (Dallas) will be coming to Austin on Sunday and the JV game starts promptly at 11am. Hope to see you there. You can't miss me, I'm the guy who looks exactly like me.
Don't miss the MD/UVA and UNC/JHU games this Saturday on ESPNU and be sure to check out InsideLacrosse.com for up to the minute scores and highlights from all your favorite teams from around the country
*Brand, the first one's free, the next one will cost you*
What's going on YB? Hope everyone's having a 'Good Friday'. Oh come on, everyone was thinking it.
So it's a big weekend for the boys and a big shout out to The Pretty Boy for finally having a week without an Albany pick. One time shame on me, two or three times shame on Terry.
Reparations:
So the Jman went 6-1 last week and not to put myself out of place but I'd have gone a perfect 7-0 had I not gone against my better judgment and backed the Danes out of principle. But if Terry is going to go to the grave for them on IL.tv, I have to back him on it.
Right now I'm sitting at 15-6 for the last three weeks and like Stony Brook, I'm hoping to keep the momentum going. So let's get to it.
Towson v Hofstra
Hofstra has had the short end of the stick schedule wise lately. Hopkins and Princeton back to back is no walk in the park. But they put together a fantastic overtime win against the Bluejays and despite the score I think they played very well against Princeton. The Tigers haven't had it easy either, dropping two against Maryland and Virginia. The offense is starting to come together, putting 13 goals on the Wahoos, but I foresee them struggling against a team that held Paul "The Man Child" Rabil scoreless.
Edge: Hofstra
Hobart v Rutgers
I see this as the battle of "who's loses were better". While the Hobart schedule thus far might not be quite as strong as Rutgers has been, I'm going to have to go with a team that pushed the Hoya's to double overtime.
Edge: Hobart
UMBC v Ohio State
Did anyone else see that UMBC made the NCAA tourney? I was shocked. Oh and their lacrosse team has proven to be legit as well. I like Ohio State . . . oh wait, no I don't, but that's a whole other story unto itself. Wins over Robert Morris and Villanova don't really put you in the same league as almost bring down Hopkins @ Homewood AND knocking off the Terps in triple overtime. Sorry, better luck next time, GO BLUE!
Edge: UMBC
Harvard v UPenn
This one is a toss up that could go either way. I'm going to go with Harvard on the basis that I think they are playing better than the Quakers as of late. And when in doubt . . . count on a Navy man; I'm counting on you Tillman
Edge: Harvard
Denver v Stony Brook
McBride put up 10 goals?! Dats a lotta dimp!! *If you don't recognize the reference, shame on you* The Seawolves have been on an offensive tear averaging 16 goals a game in their last three wins. This could bode well against a Pioneer team that gave up 20 to Cornell in the Monsoon of '08. Friends who endured the buckets of rain said that there was a visible contrast between Cornell's "all business" attitude and the "relaxed, freestyle" one of Denver. (Newt's words, not mine) Don't tell Brownie about this one.
Edge: Stony Brook
Hopkins v Virginia
If the UVA offense can continue to fire on all cylinders and they are able to exploit the weaknesses we've seen in the Bluejay's two game skid. Coach Petro will be looking to right the ship and though they still won a National Title last year in spite of a three straight loses, I'm sure that he'd prefer to avoid putting themselves into that hole again. Personally I think the Hopkins seniors are pushing too hard in the chase for the elusive third ring. Relax boys one ground ball, one pass, one shot at a time. The Bluejays will have to get to Danny Glading if they hope to disrupt the UVA attack. According to my high school AP teacher, "Studying history ensures that we make the right decision in the future." Going to have to go with the Wahoos at home in this one.
Edge: Virginia
Maryland v North Carolina
Offense wins games, defense wins championships
Edge: North Carolina
*Special Note*
It's not on the docket but I've got Duke over Georgetown
Can't wait for the games this weekend, Going to grill a few burgers and Irving and I are going to watch the games, then spending Easter Sunday with the wife's family.
I hope everyone has a safe holiday, God Bless and I'll see you on the field.
I want to apologize in advance. Things are pretty hectic at work today so I won't be able to get this out during lunch. Probably won't get much of a lunch. So here is the quick and dirty for this week's pick'em
Army vs. Rutgers
Despite their wins, I'm not that impressed with the Knights. Factor in the Texas weather and you have to pick the Cadets on principle.
Edge: Army
UPenn vs. Yale
I just don't think Yale is gonna get it done. This one might be closer that a lot of people think.
Edge: UPenn
Syracuse vs. Hopkins
If this game was at the Carrier Dome, I would pick the Orange. But at Homewood . . . after a loss, you gotta go with the Blue Jays
Edge: Hopkins
Fairfield vs. Harvard
After the way they've impacted my record this season, my gut said to pick them. But that means they'd lose. So, I'm going with my gut and the understanding that my luck with these guys has been horrible this year.
Edge: Harvard
Drexel vs. Albany
Like an unfaithful girlfriend, Albany has continued to sting my heart. Please be sure to bury Foy and I in purple and gold coffins.
Edge: Albany
Hofstra vs. Princeton
Despite the down trodden schedule, I think that the quality games that the Tigers have played put them on the favored side of this one.
Edge: Princeton
North Carolina vs. Duke
Seriously. . . ?
Edge: Duke
Sorry to keep it so short, but gotta get back to work. The business isn't going to handle itself.
So last night was the first time since Christmas that I didn't have any lacrosse related responsibilities to attend to and the wife and I decided to go out to The Saltgrass for dinner. Well who do we end up sitting across from?
. . . . . wait for it . . . . none other than . . . Aaron Behrens.
For all of you scratching your heads right now. He is the lead singer of the Austin based super-duo Ghostland Observatory. He was very nice, we chatted for a few minutes and he was very gracious to us for being fans. He actually seemed rather quiet, a drastic change from his larger than life on-stage persona, and wasn't nearly as flamboyantly dressed.
So that's all, just thought I'd share.
For anyone who isn't familiar with GLO, you can check out their website or Myspace page at the links below. Both of which have music and live performance links on them.
What's going on everyone? Hopefully everyone is having a good Friday. Mine's been ok. (*making the more or less hand gesture) I had to drop $100+ to get the Ebrake on my car repaired so it will pass inspection. With gas prices the way they are, I should just by a bicycle. Problem is it would probably take me at least a couple of hours to get to work . . . and that's if I was riding on the highway! No Thanks.
Anyway, as we review last week, we see that The Jman posted a respectable 4-3. Serious props to Sean Burns for being the only person to pick Fairfield to win. Personally I think he felt comfortable enough with Albany winning that he had a throw away and it happened to work out. To bad Albany didn't. But that's just me thinking out loud.
Reparations:
-I will admit that I have not given Notre Dame the respect they deserve for the way they have persevered through the Yeatman suspension and the countless number of doubters. Sorry about that.
-Congratulations to Fairfield for a great win over the Big Green
Uh . . . yeah . . . that's about it. Denver should have come out of Baltimore with at least 1, if not 2, wins, so that one's not on me. Come guys, let's getting it in gear.
This week's picks:
Virginia v Princeton - I'm so jazzed that this game is the first regular season game to be played on ESPN! It will truly set a high standard for the caliber of play to expect. All things being equal, the Wahoo offense is will over power the Tiger defense. That'll be that. Sorry Ryan.
Edge: Virginia
Penn State vs. Ohio State - I love it, a lacrosse battle between two football powerhouses! The Nittany Lions have struggled to put up big offensive numbers lately. I see the Buckeye's being able to limit the scoring enough to get a win.
Edge: Ohio State
Fairfield vs. Rutgers - I don't think the Cinderella magic from last week will carry over for the Stags. But Rutgers will have to slug it out to get the win.
Edge: Rutgers
Harvard vs. UMass - Like ND, the Minutemen have done a great job getting additional offense in the wake of suspensions. I think that they are on the way back up after a low point last week. They'll need a big win to have momentum for Albany.
Edge: UMass
Duke vs. Loyola - The Blue Devil offense shell shocks a young keeper. What kind of Psychology Dept's do Jesuit colleges have? Cause Hagelin is gonna need some counseling after this one. This is not last year and the upset is not gonna happen.
Edge: Duke
Notre Dame vs. North Carolina - If I were John Haus, I'd have Grant Zimmerman doing nothing but watching the ND/Albany game. Identify what Queener and the Danes did wrong and make sure it doesn't happen to us. Yes, I know what I said before about the Irish and respect and blah blah whatever. The TarHeels offense will not allow themselves to be limited in their production and that is the key to this win. Sorry Foy, bad choice.
Edge: North Carolina
Georgetown vs. Syracuse - The Orange faced the #2 midfield in the NCAA last week. This week they face a midfield that still remains unsure of their role and themselves. Brancaccio will get the pole and I think they will still struggle to find their rhythm with the consistent changes to the lines. The Orange seems to have found their stride after putting up a great offensive show against UVA. Kenny Nims is as advertised.
Edge: Orange
So there you have it. This weekend the wife and I are traveling to Houston to watch the Episcopal Houston vs. Plano game. One of the Trilogy Select kids that I coach in the summer is starting on varsity as a freshman and I promised to come see one of his games.
John Michael Gentry, remember that you heard the name here first.
Have a great weekend everyone. Stay safe and I'll see you on the field.
What's going on, everybody? I hope you're all having a good Friday.
So on the eve of Inside Lacrosse's Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic. The Jman wanted to get his weekend picks posted up as well as a few reparations for the last few weeks of lacrosse.
Let's start with the reparations:
Maryland @ Georgetown: I think we all knew that the Terps had an incredible stable of young attackmen coming in this year and I think that we all expect big things from them. Did I expect so much so fast? Not at all, so that one's on me. I also expected a lot more out of the Georgetown middies.
Hofstra @ UMass: Despite a player depletion due to misconduct, the Minutemen found a way to spread out the wealth as they were able to maintain control of the game after jumping out 5-1 in the 1st half.
UMBC @ Rutgers: Despite a tough loss prior, I expected a lot more out of the Retrievers. If they aren't able to get their heads straight, it's going to be a LONG season for Zim and the boys.
Drexel @ UPenn: The strongest 4th quarter team will win . . . every time. Look at the UPenn coaching staff and you'll see guys who KNOW this. Hopefully they can convey this vital fact to their team.
For the record and anyone that's keeping score, the Jman is 24-10 since the start of the season. *That's a % that any starting goalie or face off guy would love to have* But enough of dwelling on the past.
So The Pretty Boy and Johnny J are posting their staff picks on the IL Blogs site, and the Jman has decided to crash the party.
**WARNING: Kids don't try this at home. When you tangle with the big boys, you run this risk of injury, slander, carpel-tunnel symdrome, law-suit, public mockery, turf toe and late night calls from Inside Lacrosse HQ with everyone laughing at you in the background. Ground Rules: No touching of the hair or face. . . . . And that's it. Now let's do this!**
Face-Off Classic:
Virginia vs Syracuse:
I do love shoot-outs! Lack of help from Nims and Hardy will leave the Wahoo D capable of shutting down Mike Leveille and the Orange O. As the UVA midfield continues to gel, the match up problems only become more of an issue.
Edge: Virgina
Hopkins vs Princeton:
What hasn't already been said about the Bluejays? Despite a well disciplined and dangerous Princeton defense. It's pick your poison. Rabil, Peyser, Huntley, Boyle, Kimmel, . . . you know what? I'm tired of typing, but you get the idea.
Edge: Hopkins
Albany vs Notre Dame:
I've been on Terry's Albany train the whole time. Go Danes.
Edge: Albany
*On a side note, Albany Asst Coach John Svec and his family go way back with mine. Gotta show some Broadneck love!*
Maryland vs Duke:
Despite the above mentioned Maryland reparations, the Terps defense is going to get a face full of the nation's best offense. The game last week against the Hoyas just won't have been enough of a tune-up.
Edge: Duke
Dartmouth vs Fairfield:
After struggling against Providence, I don't think the Stags will have enough to outlast the Big Green
Edge: Dartmouth
Cornell vs Carolina:
John Haus will be looking for any sign from Cornell that they are still feeling the effects of a tough game last week against the Mids, and extort it.. I think that a smart and experienced Carolina attack will lead the Tar Heels past Max and the Big Red. If Cornell looks to deny them the ball, the Carolina midfield is more than capable of getting it done.
Edge: North Carolina
Denver vs Towson:
Terry drives the Denver bus, I'm asleep in the back. (I'm hungry. Are we there yet? Tell Quint to stay on his side!) Coach Munro has done a great job recruiting talented athletic players who like to play an up tempo style. If you want to beat them, you better be ready to let it out.
Edge: Denver
I hope everyone has a great weekend. For those of you able to get to the Face-Off Classic, have a cold one for me.
For anyone that might be new to the game. Here is a great video of Paul and Gary Gait (*two guys who revolutionized the modern game) w/ Mike Powell (*not too shabby a player himself, acknowledge the sarcasm) putting on a shooting demo at the Carrier Dome (*one of the most iconic locations to play/watch lacrosse)
So as we come to the close of the first big day of lacrosse, The Jman declares that that 2008 season is in full swing. Now today wasn't my best day, and I will admit I am by no means in "Swami-mode" but like any great team, it might take a few runs to get the legs warm and get in the zone. So let's finish this one up.
Lehigh @ Brown: If Coach Cassesse can inspire a young Lehigh team to adopt the "lunch pale" style work ethic that defines his career, they should be in for a very measurable amount of success very soon. Edge: Lehigh
Hobart @ Bucknell: I think that the Bison are going to bring all the important lessons they learned against Duke to this game and hopefully get out with a win. Edge: Bucknell
Penn State @ Notre Dame: I think that the solid Nittany defense will help keep the Irish off he board, but the newly reoganized Notre Dame offense will find a way to get it done. Edge: Notre Dame
Colgate @ Ohio State : The Buckeyes rebound from last weeks loss to get their first win of the season. Edge: Ohio State
Umbc @ Rutgers: UMBC finds the right mix to get on top of a young Rutgers attack still trying to establish their confidence: Edge: UMBC
Army @ Syracuse: The Orange take the next step in righting the ship and continue their long standing dominance of the Black Knights. Edge: Syracuse
Lafayette @ Villanova: After a playground style lesson at the hands of the Orange, Villanova looks to bully a Lafayette team, most fans have never even heard of. Edge: Villanova
Holy Cross @ Yale: Yale will continue their winning ways against Holy Cross as they hope to turn the corner and make a run toward the top of the Ivy League. Edge: Yale
I hope everyone had a great day. I will admit this is the first season that I've had "DVR", while I do sincerely miss my old school VHS. . . but how did I survive this long with out it, I'll never know.
