Birmingham-Southern Fights the Power

Dumping the glitz and glory of Division I NCAA status, Birmingham-Southern has created a college where learning and sports serve to better the student rather than the college. This refocusing of effort and resources has meant increased donations and applications. Could this happen elsewhere?

UAB Giant Killers in Athens?

There's a bit of concern in Athens amidst the hype and excitement of Matthew Stafford's first start. That concern comes in the form of UAB quarterback Chris Williams. He nearly upset the Dawgs, in a close 16-13 UGA victory, when the teams last met. This meeting finds Williams much more confident and knowledgeable than he was in what was his first career start the last time he faced UGA. Certainly, UAB must be planning on coming after Stafford and trying to rattle him. For the Dawg's part, they will be looking to solidify an offense that did little against a hapless South Carolina.

Leonard's Losers is Lost

I went looking for some of Leonard's Losers genius today. The man himself died back in 2001, but someone had been doing a great job carrying on his trademarked puns and hicksville presentation.

According to the article linked here, some moron owns the trademarks and has driven Leonard's Losers straight into the ground. The article was written nearly a year ago, but this was news to me. It's sad that a part of my childhood is gone.

When I was younger, my dad (a Georgia grad) and a friend's dad (a former All-American at Auburn), took turns trucking my friend and I to either an Auburn or Georgia game nearly every weekend. Leonard's Losers was always on the radio or the printed version was being passed around the tailgate. Now, it's all gone.

So long Leonard!

How Does Mark Richt Spell Relief?

I-N-J-U-R-Y. Georgia's starting QB, Joe Tereshinski, went down with a badly injured ankle in the shut-out against South Carolina last Saturday. While I would never insinuate that any coach would want a player to get hurt (fans, on the other hand, are not as nice), Richt surely must be breathing and sleeping much easier with the quarterback controversy seemingly being decided for him.

After 4 years of trying to balance D.J. Shockley and David Greene, keeping both happy apparently, Richt couldn't have been happy of being in the position of always defending his quarterback decision. The smallest hiccup in the game plan and fans and pundits were quick to call for Tereshinski to get the hook in favor of prep stud Matthew Stafford.

Now that Joe T. is out of the picture, how much latitude is Richt willing to give Stafford? After all, the three interceptions in the Carolina game build a fuzzy picture. Admittedly, two of the picks were tipped/dropped balls and not bad throws, but it's hard to get past some of his clearly unprepared decisions. Will Richt give Stafford a chance to settle in or will he go to the third string QB?

Gamecock QB gets rowdy off the field

It seems that not only did Blake Mitchell, South Carolina's starting QB, suffer a shut-out loss, but he also had to spend some time in jail this week. Some sort of bar fight mischief got Mitchell in this predicament, but what's really great is the video on the page of head coach Steve Spurrier's comments. He indicates that Mitchell wasn't going to play this weekend anyway because of "some sort of finger thing." Sounds to me like the "old ball coach" had iced his starter and maybe Mitchell was drowning his sorrows. You know that Spurrier was not going to let his first shut-out in 15 years go without some sort of changes.

On and Off the Mark: Separation Saturday

ESPN's Mark Schlabach looks forward to a season-making (or breaking) weekend and glances back at last weekend's rather predictable results though Mark notices how many coaching blunders occurred. Highlights include analysis of some highly charged and ranked matchups in the SEC with Mark's typically incisive perspective.

Rocky Top Schizophrenia

Tennessee spent last weekend against Cal announcing their resurgence amidst widespread questions. They looked dominant and confident. This weekend, their evil twin shows up and narrowly avoids an upset bid by the hapless cadets of Air Force. Not even the guys in Vegas are going to know what to expect next weekend.

Donnan: What To Look For In Week 1

Jim Donnan, Georgia's former (thank God) coach, gives his preview of the players and storylines coming up this week in college football. Donnan sounds like Huckleberry Hound on TV, but the guy definitely knows his football and has an eye for the telling detail.

The Bottom 10: Preseason

With everyone focusing on the teams at the top, ESPN takes its first look at the 10 teams that bring up the rear of the march to college football glory. With a wink and a nod, MTV shows serve as the benchmarks by which these barrel bottom dwellers are measured.

Schlabach: Beamer Cleans Up

Mark Schlabach kicks off his new weekly ESPN.com column, "On (and off) the Mark," with a look at how Frank Beamer is attempting to clean up the seemingly sullied image of the Virginia Tech Hokies. In addition, he runs through some of the good, the bad, and the ugly as we head into this first weekend of college football.
