Phillies Rumors: Weekend Edition

Nothing big on the rumor mill today, but a lot of small things I've read and heard here and there that are worth discussing.

Jermaine Dye - ESPN 1000 in Chicago reported that the Phils might have some interest in trading for Dye. Since the White Sox are pretty much the only team we trade with, it's certainly a possibility. Dye, 34, would more than replace Burrell's production in LF (34 HR, 41 2B, 96 RBI in 2008) with less strike-outs and better fielding. He is signed for $11.5 million in 2009, with a mutual $12 million option in 2010. I would be open to giving up Donald and any prospect not named Carrasco or Marson for him.

Junichi Tazawa - 22-year old Japanese starting pitcher. He has not played professionally over in Japan yet and is considered a prospect. Phillies and Braves are among the teams interested. I'm always up for a Japanese pitcher, especially if you don't have to pay off the team you are taking him from.

What Amaro Inherits: The State of The Phillies Contracts

Usually right after the season ends, fans immediately think about the off-season and what their team can do to improve for next year. This year, that's not exactly what has been on the minds of Phillies fans. I'm not going to start speculating on off-season moves just yet, but I do want to take a look at the state of the players on our team just to get a baseline of where we are and what new GM Ruben Amaro has on his plate.

ReclinerGM's NLCS Preview: Phillies vs. Dodgers

8. The bench

9. The manager

10. The intagibles

Phillies Ramblings: NLDS Edition

In lieu of doing an all-out preview, I'm just going to do a NLDS version of the Ramblings and let the conversation move into the comments field.

- I HATE HATE HATE how this series is set-up for us. For us to win, we have to do 1 of 2 things: Beat CC Sabathia, or win both road games. Milwaukee is 14-3 when Sabathia starts and Milwaukee is 49-32 at home. Sound tough enough? Well, that's assuming we win Game 1. If we don't, we'll have to beat Sabathia AND win 2 road games.

- Judging from the above statement, I think it's pretty safe to say I see Game 1 as a must-win (is that possible?). I do not think that Sabathia will be affected by pitching on 3 days rest again.

- So how do we combat the tough road ahead? Cole Hamels. Hamels, in my opinion, is THE most important player in this series for us. He has been great all year, and even spectacular at times, but gave up at least 2 earned runs in each of his last 4 starts. We are in the playoffs now, and we need the Brewers to feel about Hamels the same way we feel about Sabathia. He will pitch in Game 1, and Game 5 if necessary. He needs to single-handedly win one of those games for us.

Are The Phillies Done?

Was that it? Is that how our season ends? With a RBI single to left by Wes Freakin' Helms and another strike-out from Arthur Freakin' Rhodes as the nail in the coffin?

Not quite. But I'm not exactly lining up to buy my post-season tickets.

The Phillies are 3 1/2 back of the Mets, and 4 back of the Brewers with 16 games left to play. Meanwhile, we are tied with Astros, who are tearing towards the Brewers like a proverbial bat out of hell.

So how can we make it? Here are the schedules of those 4 teamsa€¦

2008-09 NBA Preview: Phoenix Suns

" Phoenix Suns

2007-08 Record: 55-27

Cool 2007 Stat: The best shooting season ever? Steve Nash became the first player ever to shoot 50% from the field, 47% from three and 90% from the foul line.

Anticipated Starting Five

PG- Steve Nash

SG- Raja Bell

SF- Grant Hill

PF- Amare Stoudemire

C- Shaquille O'Neal

Key Reserves: Leandro Barbosa, Matt Barnes, Boris Diaw, Robin Lopez

Biggest Strength - Inside/Outside Scoring

Phoenix presents one of the best inside-outside offensive games in the NBA. Their starting front-court (Shaq and Amare) is big and shot a combined 59.3% from the field last season, and I don't see that changing much this year either. Shaq can still score and shoot a high percentage when he gets touches in the post. If new coach Terry Porter regulates his minutes, he could still be dominant (scoring or passing out of double teams) for short bursts during games. Amare brings a more versatile game offensively and is even more efficient when you factor in his 80% free throw shooting. Combine those two beasts down low with the 47% (Nash), 40% (Bell) and 39% (Barbosa) three-point shooters on the perimeter, and that makes for very some difficult match-ups and defensive decisions for opposing teams.

Biggest Weakness - Age

Specifically, age at the two most important positions in basketball: point guard and center. Steve Nash is 34-years-old and will be 35 next February. He hasn't shown much sign of slowing down on the offensive end (evidenced by his 2007 cool stat above), but that isn't my concern with him or this team. Will he be able to hold his own against the guys he'll likely face in the post-season (Parker, Williams, Paul)? We saw how Paul attacked and destroyed an elderly Jason Kidd last playoffs. Kidd, at least, was once known for his defense; Nash has never been, and he is reaching retirement age.

Shaq is 36-years-old, turning 37 next March. Can he play the games necessary (at least 70) to get this team in the playoffs with a decent seed? He hasn't played more than 61 games in 4 years. Phoenix's training staff has shown they can do wonders, but I doubt they turn back the clock on the 36-year-old, 7a€² 1a€³, 320+ pound "Big Daddy." What's worse: teams will force Phoenix's big, slow, aging center and their weak defensive, elderly point guard into countless pick-and-roll situations. Not looking good for the Suns.

Key Player in '08 a€" Amare Stoudemire

Can Steve Nash adjust to a new system? Can Shaq actually get in shape, stay healthy and contribute? These are the first 2 questions that popped into my mind when thinking of the Suns, but then I realized I was pretty sure of the answers. Yes, Nash can. No, Shaq won't. The Key player, i.e., the player that can make the Suns a legit contender and not a barely-out-of-the-lottery squad is Amare. As with many straight from H.S. players, we forget how young they still are. Amare is only 25, and was 3rd in the NBA in PER last year, behind only LeBron and Chris Paul. With Mike D'Antoni's run-and-gun system now in NYC, this is the year that this should become Amare's team, not Steve Nash's. Whether or not Amare can take that responsibility will play a big role in the Suns' success this year.

Their Thaddeus (exciting player 22 or under) a€" Goran Dragic, 22

Yes, the Goran Dragic. If you are a Suns' fan, you know that they don't really like rookies (or more accurately, paying them) as shown by them passing up Andre Iguodala and Rajon Rondo in recent drafts in exchange for cash. That leaves Dragic and the recently acquired Sean Singletary as the only two players who fit into this category. Dragic (6a€²4", PG) was a 2008 2nd round draft pick and averaged 9.7 pts, 3.1 apg, 2.9 rpg and 1.2 spg for Slovenia in Eurobasket 2007. Some think he'll have to impress to gain some minutes; others think he'll be Nash's primary back-up."

ReclinerGM's 2008-09 NBA Preview: Golden State Warriors

" Golden State Warriors

2007-08 Record: 48-34

Cool 2007 Stat: Baron Davis, Monta Ellis and Stephen Jackson were the first trio to each average 20 ppg for the same team since fellow Warriors Chris Mullin, Tim Hardaway and Mitch Ritchmond did it in 1990-91.

Anticipated Starting Five

PG- Monta Ellis (injured to start the season)

SG- Corey Maggette

SF- Stephen Jackson

PF- Al Harrington

C- Andris Biedrins

Key Reserves: Marcus Williams, Kelenna Azubuike, Marco Belinelli, Ronny Turiaf, Brandan Wright

Biggest Strength - Explosive on offense

Pete's cool 2007 stat says it all. This team was good at running, putting up a lot of shots and points. This year won't be any different. You simply swap out one 20-point scorer in Baron Davis for another in Corey Maggette. With their quickness across the board they should be able to force turnovers and score in transition. But without those easy baskets they will be stuck relying on individuals to create shots for themselves in the half court. Which leads me to their weaknessa€¦

Biggest Weakness - No floor leader

Who is the point guard on this team? Who is the guy that will identify the hot man and make sure that player gets the rock in positions to score? As currently constructed this team doesn't have that guy. The slated starting lead guard is Monta Ellis. We all know he is not a point guard and thrives off the ball, looking to score. Will his role change now that Davis is gone and there is a void at point guard? I don't think so. The first alternative option is Marcus Williams, who I expect to start at point while Ellis is recovering from his mysterious injury. He has limited experience being stuck behind Jason Kidd and is unproven. The other option is C.J. Watson, a second-year player with even less experience. The Golden State Warriors do not have one player with an assist-to-turnover ratio of two or better. To make matters worst they brought in Corey Maggette who has a sub-one assist-to-turnover ratio. With such poor and/or unwilling passers and no dominant inside presence, this team is going to be playing one-on-one ball every time down court offensively. They will be fun to watch, but without a floor general, that isn't going to be good enough to get one of the top 8 spots in the West.

Key Player in '08 a€" Monta Ellis

As Dannie said above, the Warriors are without a floor leader, but they are also without a face of the franchise with Davis gone. In the offseason, Ellis was paid like a franchise player, and this year he needs to act like one. So far, with his apparent irresponsible injury, he's off to a terrible start. But when he comes back, can he make the leap to a superstar level? It might be more likely than you think. Since 2000, 11 players have averaged 20.2 ppg or more (Ellis' average last year) at 22 or younger, they are: LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, Amare Stoudemire, Chris Bosh, Dirk Nowitzki, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Kevin Durant and Monta Ellis. The Warriors invested a lot of money hoping his name won't look out of place on that list for long.

Their Thaddeus (exciting player 22 or under) a€" Brandan Wright

There are a lot of players that could fall into this category for the Warriors, including Ellis, Andris Biedrins and Anthony Randolph, but Wright is the most intriguing and unproven for me. The only 2 players ranked above him in his high school class were Greg Oden and Kevin Durant. In his freshman year at UNC, the 6a€²10" forward showed smooth skills around the basket and averaged 15 ppg on 65% shooting. The Warriors thought enough of him that they traded one of their best players for him. But last season, he ended up playing just slightly more minutes than Kevin Ollie did for us. It'll be interesting to see if he gets a chance to prove himself on the court, or if 2008 draft pick Randolph passes him in the depth chart."
