EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart underwent surgery earlier this week to repair a right toe injury he suffered in November.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The coach walked onto the field wearing the familiar navy cap with a maize 'M' on the front, but that was about all that looked the same Saturday at Michigan Wolverines's first spring practice.

ATLANTA (AP) -- Zac Swansey scored five points in overtime, including an unlikely turnaround 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left, and Georgia upset Kentucky 60-56 on Saturday to continue its surprising SEC tournament run.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- It is the day before the opening of Michigan's first spring practice under coach Rich Rodriguez, and a coach who knows Rodriguez's career better than anyone predicts that the Wolverines will not merely struggle to learn the new schemes. This coach uses terms like "ugly" and "miserable" to describe the adjustment.

From his first preseason practice at Duke, Kyle Singler was considered one of the Blue Devils' go-to players.

After a season in which he lived up to that billing and kept Duke in contention for a league title, Singler was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's rookie of the year Tuesday.

Singler received 44 of a possible 90 votes cast by members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. Wake Forest's James Johnson, who led the league's freshmen by averaging 14.8 points, was second with 30 votes and North Carolina State's J.J. Hickson was third with 11.

"It means a lot -- I put in a lot of hard work throughout the season," Singler said. "I feel very honored, but like any individual award, you kind of want to match it with a team award."

Singler, an overwhelming choice as the ACC's preseason rookie of the year, was the Blue Devils' second-leading scorer and ranked third among the league's freshmen, averaging 14.2 points and making 42 percent of his shots while carrying the burden of being thrust immediately into the lineup.

Hours before Duke's first practice of the preseason back in October, coach Mike Krzyzewski called Singler "our most well-rounded player as a freshman" and said Singler "is going to be a special player."

Then, by knocking down 3-pointers from the corner to stretch perimeter defenses and creating mismatches all over the court, the 6-foot-8 native of Oregon set out to prove Coach K right.

"There wasn't much pressure there," Singler said. "I was very confident from the very beginning that I could contribute to the team, do as much as I could do and do anything to help the team. Coach had a lot of confidence in me, and I share a lot of confidence in coach."

Singler emerged as one of the main beneficiaries of Duke's switch to a drive-and-kick offensive philosophy. He led the Blue Devils in scoring seven times, was the size-deficient team's leading rebounder 13 times, reached double figures in 24 of 30 games -- only team captain DeMarcus Nelson (25) did it more often -- and had four 20-point games.

"Kyle's been great for our team with his versatility and his talent," Nelson said. "It really fits in well with what we're doing. With (his) screening, and shaping up, and really stretching the defense out, and his perimeter shooting, it's been great."

Singler, the fifth Duke player named the league's top rookie and first since Chris Duhon in 2001, snapped North Carolina's stranglehold on the award. A Tar Heels player had claimed it in each of the last three years, with Golden State Warriors forward Brandan Wright winning it last year. Singler joins Jim Spanarkel (1976), Mike Gminski (1977), Gene Banks (1978) and Duhon as Blue Devils to win the award.

"He's probably played as well as any freshman I've had," Krzyzewski said.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. â€" West Virginia running back Noel Devine was among four Mountaineers' football players to plead no contest to misdemeanor battery charges after being arrested Thursday.

Police said the charges stemmed from an altercation outside Club Z in Morgantown on Feb. 16 but did not provide details.

"Discipline with the situation has already been handled within the program," WVU football coach Bill Stewart said through a spokesman. He said he would have no further comment.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Danny Green had 18 points and top-ranked North Carolina scored the final 10 points of its 76-68 victory over No. 5 Duke (No. 6 AP) on Saturday night to give the Tar Heels the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title.

Tyler Hansbrough finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds in his third straight victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and Wayne Ellington also scored 16 for the Tar Heels (29-2, 14-2).

North Carolina blew an early double-figure lead and briefly trailed before closing strong, holding the Blue Devils scoreless for the final 5 1/2 minutes to earn its eighth straight victory and the top seed in the ACC tournament in Charlotte -- and maybe the inside track for the No. 1 seed in the Charlotte-based East Regional.

Backing It Up

The Tar Heels have been extremely successful against the Blue Devils when ranked No. 1. North Carolina improved to 8-1 all-time when top-ranked against rival Duke with the victory Saturday. Here's the breakdown:

Greg Paulus scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half for the Blue Devils (26-4, 13-3), who rallied from a 14-point first-half hole but missed its final 10 shots to fall to 15-1 at Cameron this season.

Jon Scheyer added 14 points, and his stickback with 5:44 remaining gave Duke its only lead of the second half at 68-66 -- but that was the Blue Devils' last field goal of the game.

Ellington drove the left side for a layup to tie it at 68 with 3 minutes left and start North Carolina's game-closing 10-0 run, and on the next possession Hansbrough stuck back Green's miss to put the Tar Heels ahead to stay.

Ty Lawson, who missed the previous meeting with a sprained left ankle, finished with 10 points for the Tar Heels, who won their first winner-take-all regular-season finale against Duke since 1985.

It was sweet revenge for Ellington and Green, who were roundly blamed for the Tar Heels' 89-78 loss last month in Chapel Hill after they were a combined 4-for-24 shooting. With the league's regular-season title on the line, they were significantly sharper this time, making a combined 14-of-28 attempts.

They were the key components of a first half burst by North Carolina that was perhaps one of the most dominating by an opponent at the famously rowdy arena. The Tar Heels raced out to an early 29-15 lead on the strength of Green's hot hand -- he was 6-for-8 at the break.

Kyle Singler and Gerald Henderson each scored 10 for Duke, which got back in the game by opening the second half on a 17-9 run.
