Grant, Barton Go Late and More Gholston Goodness

Thanks to late Sunday calls, Larry Grant and Kirk Barton will be getting a chance to prove they belong at the next level. Both were taken in the seventh round, Grant by San Francisco and Barton by the Bears.

Aside from the thrill of, you know, hearing your name called in the NFL draft, Grant will surely see his streak of consecutive championship game losses ended with the 49ers and Barton missed "Mr. Irrelevance" status by 5 spots. So, happy thoughts all around.

Fullback Dionte Johnson was not selected and will try to make teams via the free agency route. Johnson's dad, the defensive line coach in New England, has enough contacts in the league to at least get Dionte some looks.

But back to Gholston â€" how will a guy that seems so shy and humble handle the fans and media in New York? Jets fans at the draft seemed to like the pick, chanting "VER-non GHOL-ston" leading up to the selection (while impressively keeping their bearing to break into boos when it was announced that the Pats were on the clock).

Terrelle Who?

We knew there would be some rumblings about the backup quarterback heading into this fall, we just didn't think it would be this backup.

22 year-old sophomore Joe Bauserman stole the show in the 2008 Buckeye spring game, connecting with fellow soph Taurian Washington on two long scoring strikes (true, one was called back on a penalty, but you can't take anything away from the throw and catch). Bauserman looked so good on the afternoon that the large contingent of fans that see Boeckman as nothing more than a big-game disaster-in-waiting have already begun placing orders for their #14 bobble-heads.

Turn on the Lights and Don't Run out of Drinks

It was announced yesterday that Ohio State is slated for two prime time games in Big Ten play, to go along with the USC match-up in LA.

The Buckeyes will travel to Madison on October 4th, their first visit since 2003, when Robert Reynolds tried to perform an emergency tracheotomy on Jim Sorgi and the Badgers ended Ohio State's 19 game winning streak.

OSU will then host Penn State on October 25th, in what could be Joepa's last game in Columbus. Gene Smith is aware he needs extra wattage that night, in case Paterno needs a bright path for his emergency bathroom runs. The Big Ten may believe this is Coach Paterno's last year, as 4 of the 5 prime time conference games involve Penn State.

11W Mix Tape: Saine as Byars Edition?

Tressel compares Brandon Saine to Keith Byars, clears things up on his "only between gentlemen" statement and more.

Outsider Observations

Since Saturday's jersey scrimmage was closed to everyone but staff, members of the MSM and select members of coachtressel.com, there's not a whole lot I can add to the conversation. We're stuck parsing the accounts of beat reporters.

Rumors and Assumptions

The fate of the three defensive backs allegedly busted for puffing down is still up in the air. We can begin to piece some things together based on the OSU student-athlete drug-testing policy and past incidents, however.

Up in Smoke

That 2008 Buckeye defense we've all been daydreaming about just took a bit of a hit. The rumors from earlier in the day proved to be correct and Donald Washington, Jamario O'Neal and Eugene Clifford are in a bit of trouble.

The three have allegedly been caught with weed-flavored urine and are facing suspensions or outright dismissals from the team. All three were held out of spring practice and were seen conditioning while the rest of the squad participated in pads.

Buckeyes Finish 35th in Final Coaches Poll

Not exactly what I had in mind heading into the season but strides were made down the stretch. The extra games and practice time can only help what will be an even younger squad next fall. Assuming Koufos bolts for the NBA or Greece with Butler, Hunter and Wiggler already history, three starting jobs and four of the top seven spots in the rotation would be up for grabs.

Woody Caption Contest - Take Three

Since you guys had fun with the last two Woody caption contests, I thought it was time for another.

No ladies on each arm this time around but I'm sure you'll make do.

As usual, the winner receives only the props of fellow readers. We already give up more booty than Dashiki. In that vein, I'll start it off - "Hey, Arch…smell my finger!"

Oh Snap, Indeed

Rich Rodriguez fires back after Tressel's "only between gentlemen" comment. It's great to see that The Rivalry is in great shape -- even during this transition year.

Brew Crew May Want to Avoid Shoulder Contact

What's with the Brew Crew's affinity for injured shoulders? How soon will Adams see the field this year?

Balanced Buckeyes Capture NIT Crown

MOP Kosta Koufos paced Ohio State with 22 points, 20 in the second half, as the Buckeyes placed four in double figures on their way to the first postseason championship in the 11W era, a 92-85 victory to claim the 2008 NIT Title.

Sure, it wasn't the NCAA's but it doesn't change the fact the Buckeyes will be one of two teams to end the postseason with a win which will no doubt serve as a springboard to 2009.

Can a Buckeye Get an Option Pitch?

Terrelle Pryor may not be arriving on campus until June, but that doesn't mean it's too early to discuss how he'll be used this fall.

It's generally assumed that LiC will be used in the same manner as Tebow was used his freshman season at Florida. Like Tebow, Pryor will drive the crowd bonkers when he enters the game and the dynamics of what he can do on the field basically doubles the size of your playbook. Similarly, Boeckman is a returning starter entering his final season and no matter how good the incoming talent, he won't lose his starting position.

It will be interesting to see how Tressel utilizes his prize catch. As one that's made a living out of adjusting his schemes to his personnel instead of the other way around, you can bet he'll have some tricks up his sleeve.

Could one of those tricks be the option?

The Next Chapter Begins

Pryor is already affecting the depth charts in not so subtle ways. Oh and Tress likes him some Adams, also.
