I was not a big fan of the US Open heading out West and more specifically to the confines of San Diego. After witnessing the 2008 version I now have to take my hat off and applaud the Khaki Slacks and White Shirts of the USGA on a job well done. The USGA did a great job of setting up the course to be tough, but also fair. It certainly identified those that were on top of their game and those that were not worthy. Not to be cliche, but the US Open Championship is a marathon and not a sprint. You have to plod along and take only what the course has to offer. If a player tries to force things and become a bit too offensive minded they can drop so far off the leader board that they will need a GPS system in the golf bag just to find their way back to the practice tee. Just ask Phil and Ernie. Tiger vs Rocco was riviting. We all got a glimpse of it on Sunday as we watched Tiger chase down Rocco on the final 6 holes. It was an epic duel in the SoCal sunshine. As you followed the action you had the gut feeling that Tiger would find a way to catch and overtake Rocco. The stage was set for something dramatic to happen and for Tiger to pull this out. This time, however, there was also a hint of maybe, just maybe the Mighty Swoosh would be derailed by a very decent player and a very painful knee. Almost on queue, just about the time the Fat Lady was warming up her vocal chords, Tiger does what Tiger does best. He digs deeper than any golfer that has ever strolled the majestic fairways of US Opens past and finds a way to birdie the 72nd hole. Not only did this final putt in regulation allow Tiger to keep the dream of his 14th Major Championship alive, he gave us all a very special invitation to watch a one on one match-up of him chasing down history. In true Tiger fashion, it was riviting to say the least. You got the ultimate competitor being pushed to the limit and then some by a decent, but, by no means marquee player in Rocco. Again, just when you thought perhaps there is no gas left in this Tiger's tank, he goes into the reserve that only he has. Tiger never gets out of the moment. He (just do it) does the things that us mere mortals can't. Chris Angel is a tremendous entertainer, but Tiger is truly the "Mind Freak". He won this tournament on 95% mind and 5% physical talent. Like him or loathe him, there is no other in his league. Enjoy what you are watching because this is truly an amazing march to history. 14 and counting!
