Canseco regrets naming names in his book about steroids

Jose Canseco, whose book "Juiced," which focused attention on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball and led to congressional hearings on the subject, now says he never should have written the book and named names of alleged steroid users

UM football coach Shannon can't win or lose at QB

Let's not call it a quarterback controversy.

University of Miami football coach Randy Shannon is not caught between the horns of a dilemma. Horn of plenty, yes, but dilemma, no.

He has two young quarterbacks with unlimited potential. Why does he have to stick exclusively with one?

MVP Race: LeBron Is Preseason No. 1

1. LeBron James, Cavs G MIN FG% 3P% FT% STL BLK RPG AST PTS PER

75 40.4 .484 .315 .712 1.8 1.1 7.9 7.2 30.0 29.2

These days the U.S. dollar isn't worth what it used to be. And to judge from last season's MVP voting, where James finished fourth, 30.0 ppg,

7.9 rpg and 7.2 apg don't have the value we thought they did either.

2. Chris Paul, Hornets G MIN FG% 3P% FT% STL BLK RPG AST PTS PER

80 37.6 .488 .369 .851 2.7 0.1 4.0 11.6 21.1 28.4

By all accounts, CP3 is one of the good guys in the league. If that is the case, how do you explain the way he bullied his way to the top of the point guard line, cutting in front of elders Steve Nash and Jason Kidd?

3. Kobe Bryant, Lakers G MIN FG% 3P% FT% STL BLK RPG AST PTS PER

82 38.9 .459 .361 .840 1.8 0.5 6.3 5.4 28.3 24.3

There wasn't a ceremony, but I'm sure Bryant was happy to leave James with the "Best player never named MVP" title. Now, he has to take care of his pinky, keep Lamar Odom happy and work Andrew Bynum into the mix

College football midseason overview

Just what we thought, right?

Vanderbilt (5-1, 3-1 SEC) heading to Georgia this weekend trying to take sole possession of the Eastern Division lead with November fast approaching.

Alabama (6-0, 3-0 SEC) ranked No. 2 in the polls and playing the kind of physical, bloody-your-nose football the guy in the houndstooth hat would have loved.

Now, if only the second half of the SEC season is this unpredictable. Alabama was supposed to be at least a year away with all the freshmen it's playing, and yet the Crimson Tide would be playing in the BCS national championship game if the season ended today.

Baltimore Ravens coach's remarks get Miami Dolphins fired up

While trying to defend Cam Cameron's performance as the Dolphins' coach, Ravens coach John Harbaugh took a swipe at the players still left from Cameron's reign.

BCS edition of the Bottom 10

The Bottom 10 inspirational thoughts of the week:

Oh, where are the things I saw in my dreams?

Where's the happy that freedom should bring?

I see me today and know yesterday

That I threw away my most precious things.

I see me a man who's lonely, wants only to lose

A.J. Highsmith is 100 percent a Hurricane!

As he sat in the stands watching future opponent Missouri City Elkins play against Fort Bend Marshall, University of Miami commitment A.J. Highsmith and his impressive Fort Bend Hightower team felt pretty good about their chances this season

Miami Hurricanes will rely heavily on underclassmen

Good news: Coach Randy Shannon should have no trouble convincing recruits that they can play right away at the University of Miami.

Bad news: One of the youngest teams in college football just got even younger.

Already heavily reliant on underclassmen, UM announced season-ending or potentially season-ending injuries to three veterans this week -- senior defensive end Eric Moncur, senior right tackle Reggie Youngblood and junior linebacker Colin McCarthy. Senior safety Randy Phillips also is out indefinitely.

The injuries will increase the burden on the team's younger players, who also will be without some of the leaders whose mentorship has been key to their development.
