I took a lot of time composing the list, and I did not just look at stats, but I did take that into account. With that said, my all-star list will have major differences than many others. For example, I have
Dan Uggla starting ahead of the Phillies' second baseman
Chase Utley.
ou see Utley's numbers (.291, 22 HR, 63 RBI as of 6/22/08) and he is on the first place Phillies team, so he seems like a lock to start right? Uggla not only has better stats than that of Utley, but he plays the field better (.983 fielding and 6 errors) than that of Utley (.982 fielding and 7 errors) and the Marlins may still win the NL East after all since they are only 1 game back of the Phillies as of June 22nd.
Picking a shortstop of the AL team was a tough task, but I went with my gut and picked
Yuniesky Betancourt (Mariners). Even though he plays shortstop on the worst team in the MLB, I do not think either
Michael Young or
Derek Jeter deserve to start ahead of Betancourt.
Another Mariner also deserves to make the All-Star team, and it is not Ichiro. I am talking about
Felix Hernandez. If you ignore his mediocre win-loss record of 6-5, and look at his ERA of 2.87, WHIP of 1.29, 91 K's, you will see why he should be a lock for the All-Star Team. Hernandez has managed to have a winning record on this team, and if he was on any other team he would be in the discussion for AL Cy Young.
