Baseball adds another portion of renovation

It's 100 feet to the left, infinity to the center and 120 feet to the right, with a high fence. It's the Oregon State baseball team adding another piece to its new puzzle.

Workers began renovation Tuesday on a practice facility adjacent to Goss Stadium, which itself has been in the works for many months.

Oregon State volleyball is no easy task in July. It takes determination -- and a good alarm.

Strahan signs free-agent deal, turns heads for new team

Michael Strahan has turned out to be a great free agent aquisition - by the media. He was no more than 30 minutes into his new starting position when he dropped his thoughts on the Giants and how they should handle disillusioned tight end Jeremy Shockey.

Masterson closes season, adds history

Casey Masterson finished the final race of her freshman year on Sunday. The freshman-phenom finished sixth in the 1,500-meters at the 2008 USA Track and Field Junior National meet.

That finish also designated Masterson as the sixth best 1500-meter runner in the nation......

OSU golfers shooting the links, connecting

Oregon State men's golfers Alex Williams and Vincent Johnson have had a busy summer. They recently defeated 59 other participants at the Broadmoor Golf Course on Sunday. That qualified the two for a trip to the United State Amateur Public Links Championship.

Only a few weeks ago, the two golfers earned All-Academic honors. Williams earned first-team honors while Johnson was a second-team selection.

Johnson earns his third career selection to the second-team all-academic squad as the senior carries a 3.12 GPA in business administration and will graduate this year. Williams, a junior with a 3.67 GPA in history, earns his second straight selection to the first-team all-academic squad......

The MLB All-Star Team... as it should be

I took a lot of time composing the list, and I did not just look at stats, but I did take that into account. With that said, my all-star list will have major differences than many others. For example, I have Dan Uggla starting ahead of the Phillies' second baseman Chase Utley.

ou see Utley's numbers (.291, 22 HR, 63 RBI as of 6/22/08) and he is on the first place Phillies team, so he seems like a lock to start right? Uggla not only has better stats than that of Utley, but he plays the field better (.983 fielding and 6 errors) than that of Utley (.982 fielding and 7 errors) and the Marlins may still win the NL East after all since they are only 1 game back of the Phillies as of June 22nd.

Picking a shortstop of the AL team was a tough task, but I went with my gut and picked Yuniesky Betancourt (Mariners). Even though he plays shortstop on the worst team in the MLB, I do not think either Michael Young or Derek Jeter deserve to start ahead of Betancourt.

Another Mariner also deserves to make the All-Star team, and it is not Ichiro. I am talking about Felix Hernandez. If you ignore his mediocre win-loss record of 6-5, and look at his ERA of 2.87, WHIP of 1.29, 91 K's, you will see why he should be a lock for the All-Star Team. Hernandez has managed to have a winning record on this team, and if he was on any other team he would be in the discussion for AL Cy Young.

From the heart

his isn't really a column, it's part obituary part personal ad. I've been reading too much Rick Reilly lately - Lindsay Schnell got me hooked.

Someone is missing today. They have been for a while. No one's noticed though. Maybe no one cares.

I'm pretty sure I'm alone in this search. Then again, maybe coach Craig Robinson is with me.

Call me an old-timer, and by college standards that might apply, but I'm a sucker for nostalgia - and I don't mean the song by Marco Polo and Masta Ace or the "dancer" at the gentlemen's club in Eugene.

Don't sleep on these sleepers

Only 84 days to go until Thursday, August 28th when Oregon State football travels to Palo Alto to take on Stanford to open the 2008 college football season. 84 days, leaving plenty of time to think, hope and speculate on whether or not the Beavers can make it three successful seasons in a row.....
