Possible Fits for Favre

Currently, Brett Favre is attempting to get in touch with Green Bay's General Manager, Ted Thompson, to discuss the possibilities of being taken off the retired/reserve list and placed on the Packers active roster. Technically, all that Favre needs to do is send a letter of intent to play with the Packers. From that point, the Packers have 24 hours to trade him, release him, or put him on the active roster. Trading a player like Brett Favre would be hard to do... emotionally and financially, so naturally it might take longer than the alloted 24 hours (maybe that's why Favre hasn't sent in his letter yet. Out of respect for the Packers organization, he doesn't want to be an inconvenience in making them rush to make a decision, b/c a rushed decision wouldn't benefit either party).

It's hard to imagine Brett Favre in any jersey other than a Packer jersey... but didn't we think the same thing about Joe Montana when he made the switch from San Francisco to Kansas City?

If Green Bay doesn't want Favre to return on their roster, their only options would be to trade or release Favre. Green Bay probably won't release him for a couple reasons. 1) Salary cap ramifications and 2) Allowing Favre to pick whatever team he wants, might land Green Bay in hot water if he landed in Chicago/Minnesota or Detroit, divisional opponents.

If the Pack were to trade Favre, they would probably trade him out of the conference to the AFC.

Below is a list of all the AFC teams... and where I think Favre might fit in the best.

AFC NORTH

Baltimore - Makes a lot of sense... If Favre could bring consistency to the Raven offense, we already know that their defense can perform at playoff quality... Baltimore could compete next season w/ Favre. Gunslinging Joe Flacco can take notes from the one of the best 'gunslingers' in the history of the NFL. Favre probably has a little more left in the tank than McNair did when he went to Baltimore a couple seasons ago. 99% fit.

Pittsburgh - No. Unless Big Ben gets pummeled and injured... but I don't think Favre should be traded to a team that would only use him as an insurance policy. 5% fit.

Cincy - Again, he would only be used as an insurance policy if Carson went down. 5% fit.

Cleveland - No. 0% fit.

AFC SOUTH

Tennessee - Would be interesting... he would be closer to home (TN is a neighboring state to Mississippi). Vince Young kinda scared me w/ his offseason comments about wanting to retire after his rookie season. Favre knows how to perform well with unknown targets (much like McNair could, and VY for that matter). I think Favre made Antonio Freeman a house-hold name in the 90s, even though he isn't particularly a dominating WR. Favre would be an insurance policy, but proximity makes this an interesting fit. 50% fit.

Indy - No. 0% fit.

Houston - Not really a good fit... although they do run a west coast style offense. Favre would be backup to Schaub in a divison that features the Colts and the Jaguars. 5% fit.

Jacksonville - Not a good fit. Garrard is their guy, and they have good QB depth with Cleo Lemon and Todd Bouman. 0%.

AFC EAST

Miami - Makes above average sense. Who in Hades is going to start in Miami anyway between Chad Henne/ John Beck/ Josh McCown... I know Bill Parcells got to the playoffs w/ QUINCY CARTER as his QB, but cmon... This QB crop is slim-pickings, and could use a Favre boost for the next year or two. I'd say a 90% fit. I would not doubt the possibility of Miami making a quick turn-around (record wise) from behind 1-15, to being at least 8-8 with the acquisition of Favre, Parcells, and a new philosophy.

New England - No. 0%

New York (Jets) - It would be interesting to see Brett Favre in the Big Apple... I can imagine Brett Favre actually being able to utilize Leverneus Coles' deep threat abilities a little better than Chad Pennington. But they already have a lot of money tied up to Chad and they are grooming Kellen Clemens (I think). 15% fit.

Buffalo - Naw. 0% fit.

AFC WEST

Oakland - This actually might be a good fit. Al Davis has a love for rookie coaches and veteran QBs. Jamarcus Russell is an impressive prospect, but might not be as seasoned as the most optimistic Black Hole inhabitants are hoping he will be in his first full season as an NFL starter. The Raiders cap situation looks a little ugly, so I don't think they could comfortably accommodate Favre. Favre would be 5 years older than his head coach, Lane Kiffin. The QB depth behind Russell is bleak, consisting of Andrew Walter, Marques Tuiasosopo, and Sam Keller (rookie from Nebraska). A Favre acquisition reunites him with newly acquired Raider WR (former Packer WR) Javon Walker... and puts Oakland in the realm of playoff relevance immediately. 45% fit.

Denver - Who does Denver have behind Jay Cutler? Patrick Ramsey? I don't think their QB depth is anything to go crazy about, but Cutler is entrenched as the franchise's starting QB. Denver has optimism that Cutler will be much improved this season with the assistance of diabetes treatment. 15% fit.

San Diego - No. 0% fit.

Kansas City - This would be an interesting destination. Personally, I don't believe Brodie Croyle is the future of Kansas City. I don't think he has the ability to put up big numbers with the current roster. An accelerated-aging Larry Johnson could benefit with an upgrade at the QB position. A Favre acquisition could help increase Larry Johnson's longevity, taking immense amounts of pressure off of him. Teams probably couldn't play 8-in-the-box with Favre at QB. The quality of LJ's carries would increase, meaning that he wouldn't have to carry the ball 400+ times a season. All in all, Kansas City probably won't be competing for a Super Bowl this season, so it's not a totally solid fit. 30% fit.

Under The Raid-ar

Vegas NFL Futures betting has the Oakland Raiders winning 6 games for the 2008-09 NFL regular season.

- They go from having one of the hardest schedules in the NFL to having the easiest schedule in the NFL. 11 of our first 12 opponents didn't even make the playoffs last season. John Clayton has stated on ESPN that the Raiders could be 7-5 going into December.

- They've revamped their entire roster... especially the offense.

- #1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, Jamarcus Russell, is the new full-time starting QB.

- #4 overall pick in the 2008 draft, Darren McFadden, looks like a complete stud at running back (and anything else he decides to play).

- Newcomer WR, Javon Walker, is coming along slowly but surely from knee surgery to provide a nice big-play target for Jamarcus to utilize.

- The unsung hero will be Kwame Harris, an excellent run blocker for a run-prominent offense. The acquisition of Harris will prove to be huge when he continuously opens up that 1 crease that Darren McFadden uses to explode through into the second level of NFL defenses.

- 4th round pick from 2007, RB Michael Bush, is a personal fan favorite of mine. I'm transferring to the University of Louisville this Fall, and I'm well aware of the legacy that Bush left there as a big-play back. He is in the mold of Brandon Jacobs, but he can move smoothly through blocks with better agility.

*All of these players did not receive extensive playing time in Oakland in 2007. They are completely new to the lineup.

Their defense has improved as well...

- Criticize the contract of Tommy Kelly all that you want. The Raiders are giving it to him for a clear and distinct reason... Tommy Kelly is one of the best defensive players in the game when he is healthy. Warren Sapp was quoted as saying that Kelly could probably be better than he ever was when it's all said and done. Torn ACLs are tricky to judge though... hopefully he'll regain that explosiveness that makes him such a dangerous DT.

- Gabril Wilson is a surefire tackling safety that will save a lot of 20+ yard runs from happening. In a division that features LT, LJ and Denver's running attack... it's important to have that last line of defense actually be able to make a tackle (sorry Stuart Schweigert).

- The acquisition of Wilson allows #7 overall pick from the 2006 draft, Michael Huff, to move to his natural position at Free Safety.

- DeAngelo Hall is a PHENOMENAL PICKUP! In a secondary that already has Nnamdi Asomugha, this will leave D-Hall in man coverage with every team's #2 WR. There are only a handful of teams that boast a #2 WR that I am truly fearful of.

Conclusion:

If I could look into a crystal ball and tell you the future... I'd tell you that on paper, the Raiders have vastly improved in intricate aspects of the game that they were completely weak in last season. They should win more than 6 games... so if you are the gambling type, I'd put my chips in for Oakland if I were you.

- They've improved their running game not only with the additions of McFadden and Bush, but with run-blocking specialist, Kwame Harris. This will take more and more pressure off Jamarcus Russell... making the playaction more and more effective... and I've seen Jamarcus stiff-arm some Linebackers... so I'm not afraid of him getting sacked as much as previous Raider QBs have in the last 5 years.

- They've improved their passing game with the acquisition of Javon Walker... somebody seasoned who knows how to catch and hang on to the ball.

- They probably have the scariest secondary in the game now... ( DeAngelo Hall/ Michael Huff/Gabril Wilson/ Nnamdi Asomugha/ Stanford Routt).

- They are getting Tommy Kelly back from injury.

Just Win, Baby!
