Game 2- UW vs. Cleveland State

I'm trying to forget the Portland loss and move it past me.

Here are the reasons why the Dawgs lost against Portland:

23 turnovers. Inexcusable. Take care of the freaking ball, we're not scrimmaging anymore, this is the real deal.

Pondexter scored two points. You scored 2 points on Portland?!?! Do you want to score? Take initiative and try to shoot the ball a little more, Jon Brockman needs your help.

Free throws? If this continues then the Huskies will be going no where this season, they went 19 for 32, 60%.

Lastly, three pointers. 3 for 16? Ryan Appleby was so crucial last year. Someone needs to step it up.

Okay, I"m over it.

The Opponent: Cleveland State (1-0)

Game time: 7 p.m.

TV: None

Husky Projected Starters:

PG-Isaiah Thomas

SG- Justin Dentmon

F- Quincy Pondexter

F- Darnell Gant

F- Jon Brockman

Injured- Matthew Bryan-Amaning (Doubtful), Tyresh Breshers (Out)

Keys to the Game

How will the Huskies respond? Will they come out with even more fire to insure a victory against a sleeper Cleveland State team?

Three-point shooting. After two games, some trends start to emerge, hopefully they'll be able to show that they can shoot better from long range in this game.

See how freshman Isaiah Thomas rebounds from a tough game against Portland.

Here is a new theroem to memorize: If  Quincy Pondexter scores more than 15 points then the Huskies will win.

Bottom Line: Playing at home should change things, I think the outcome will be a favorable one for the Dawgs, which means a win.

Weekly Grades

After another loss-filled week in Seattle sports, it's hard to find positive performances. The ones I came up with, as well as the poor ones, are listed below.

Kennedy Girls Swimming: Following an upsetting Kennedy Football Team loss to Liberty, the Lady Lancer swim team lifted my spirits by winning the Swim and Dive State Championship Meet with a score of 310 points. Kennedy won with their depth, defeating second place Juanita (225 points) and repeating as state champions. Grade: A

Jon Brockman,
UW Basketball: I don't want to focus on the result of this game, or who their opponent was, or the speculation that this team may be yet another disappointment (its way too early for that). What I do want to focus on is Brockman, who put up 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. He looked like an All-American, and, if anyone could lead us to the NCAA Tournament, it is him. Grade: B+

Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle Seahawks: Coming off a back injury, Hasselbeck attempted to lead his struggling team to victory. He looked rusty however, and the Seahawks lost to the Cardinals, 26-20. Hasselbeck completed 17 of 29 and passed for one touchdown and three interceptions. More importantly, though, Hasselbeck was unable to lead the winning drive in the final minutes as he so often has done, throwing an interception on the Hawk's final drive. The Seahawks are now realistically (but not officially) out of playoff contention. Grade: D

Washington Huskies Football Team: In UCLA coach Rick Neuheisal's return to Husky Stadium, the Dawgs were unable to come up with their first victory of the year and remain winless at 0-10. After this 27-7 loss, it seems less and less likely that the Huskies will ever win a game this year. The one most winnable game remaining is the Apple Cup, which looks to be a battle for the basement between the Huskies and an equally horrendous Cougar team. Grade: D-

Should any of these grades be changed? Do any other performances deserve grading?

Weekly Poll: What's Your Take on the Seahawks Right Now?

Every Monday morning SeaTown Sports will have a weekly poll introduced. The poll will run through the week and will be placed on our sidebar so it is easily accessible.

Last week's poll: Who Should the Mariners Go After?

I totally saw it coming- Everyone was hyping up the Seahawks to be possible super bowl champs. I knew all along that Matt Hasselbeck's injury was a little more serious than coaches were letting on and I knew that a different team (cough, Arizona) would be able to overtake the Hawks in the NFC west.

Total letdown- Are you kidding me! What the hell happened!?! Why does our defense especially our secondary suck so bad right now? Aren't the players supposed to be playing extra good for their soon-to-be future hall-of-famer legendary coach? Is there such thing as home field advantage anymore? This season was supposed to make up for the Mariners and the Sonics, but it has worsened my attitude toward Seattle sports even more.

It's acceptable considering all the Injuries- If any team had gone through the amount of injuries the Seahawks have and are going through then they would be in the same position as the Hawks are in right now. It seems like almost every starter on offense and defense has had some sort of injury this season.

I'm ready for the Mariners- Zduriencik is in town! A new coach like Joey Cora is going to take us back to 1995, right? Is it Spring Training yet?

Don't really care- Playing the apathy card? Why not? Should you care about the Seahawks at all? I mean, there ARE a few other teams that you could cheer for, how about the state football teams? Washington and Washington State, they're pretty decent right? Not.

<a href ="http://answers.polldaddy.com/poll/1114389/" >What's your current take on the Seahawks?</a>&nbsp; <br/> <span style="font-size:9px;"> (<a href ="http://www.polldaddy.com">&nbsp; surveys</a>)</span>

UW Basketball: 5 Must Win Games

This article can also be viewed at Bleacherreport.com:

After a disappointing season last year, Lorenzo Romar has his troops ready for a new season. The UW basketball team is hungry for an NCAA tournament berth.

They finally have the right personnel in place including a perennial All-American candidate, Jon Brockman and a star freshman in Isaiah Thomas. Here are five games that Brockman and his teammates will have to win to make March Madness a reality:

November 24th against the Kansas Jayhawks (CBE Classic): This will be the first true test for this Husky team. The defending champs lose just about every player that played significant minutes last year.

However, the talent that is filling in provides little drop off. The Jayhawks match up surprisingly well with the Huskies. One battle that will be fun to watch will be between Brockman, who weighs 255-pounds and Quintrill Thomas, who weighs 240-pounds. This game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.

The Huskies need a win here to insure a high seed when March rolls around.

December 4th against the Oklahoma State Cowboys HOME: Besides the Kansas game, Oklahoma State is the only other significant non-conference foe the Huskies will face. This game will be extremely entertaining because of the anticipated high-pace styles employed by both teams.

A new head coach for the Cowboys, Travis Ford, has promised to push the ball more and play more pressure defense. This game also promises to be a big game for Brockman, who will be going against a forward-less Cowboy team who will probably only start one forward, opting for a four-guard lineup.

If the Huskies can beat Oklahoma State, then it will prove that the Huskies' athleticism is the real deal.

January 3rd at Washington State Cougars: It's not so much that the Cougars will be a tough team, but it's more because the Huskies haven't beaten the Cougars since 2005. The Cougars have won the last seven meetings between the two teams.

However, this time around the Huskies will be the favorites, with the Cougars returning only two starters from last season.

The winner of this game will be determined by which team is able to impose its' style on the other team. I have a feeling that the Huskies' athleticism and up-tempo style will win over the solid defensive prowess of the Cougars.

With this game being the first Pac-10 game, it will be vital for the Huskies to start off on the right foot to kick off a tough conference schedule.

January 31st at Arizona State Sun Devils: This season, the Sun Devils are expected to be the second best team in the Pac-10 to UCLA. The Sun Devils will return one of the top players in the conference, James Harden, who will be competing with Brockman for conference player of the year honors.  Along with Harden, Jeff Pendegraph, a senior forward will provide concerns for the Husky defense.

This will be a tough game for the Huskies to pull out, but if they win here, they're destined for big things come March.

February 19th at UCLA Bruins:
Easily the top team in the conference, this game will be the second of the series between the Huskies and the Bruins. Of course both games are crucial, but the road game is even more important as the Dawgs have struggled to win against ranked foes on the road. Alfred Aboya and James Keefe are the only experienced returning players from last year's UCLA team.

However Jrue Holiday, a freshman, will be the player to watch. Jrue is the brother of current Husky player, Justin Holiday. Will Romar use Justin to guard his little brother? If so, Jrue will have to beat the Huskies who will not only be attacking him out on the court, but also be waging a mental war at the same time in little Jrue's head.

Seahawks Week 11 Preview: Hawks Vs. Cardinals

This is the most important game on the schedule. This game will determine the rest of our season. Whether we pack up and play for next year or try for the unlikely playoff spot depends on this game. No matter what, it's still a point of pride to never lose to the Cardinals regardless of how the rest of the season goes. On to the preview. When the Hawks have the ballFor the first time, the Hawks have their starting quarterback (hopefully) healthy, and they chose a pretty good game to return. Arizona's pass defense is below average and if Hass is healthy, he will have a good opportunity to show it. The defense is overall about average, so the Hawks should be able to score some points, especially if we can get the passing game to work well enough to get the running game going. When the Cards have the ball. Last year, the Seahawks battered Kurt Warner at Quest with 5 sacks, 3 by Patrick Kerney. Warner felt the pressure all game and threw 5 interceptions, including a pick-six to Trufant. If the Seahawks are going to win this game they need to have another performance like this. The Arizona Cardinals have the #1 offense in the NFL, and amazingly, nearly all of it comes from their passing game (their running game is mediocre at best, especially when Edggerin James is getting carries) led by the same Kurt Warner. Our secondary has obviously played a lot worse this year, but we can still give Warner that kind of pressure. The man who allowed 3 sacks that day still starts at right tackle and is the weakest link in that offensive line-Former top 5 pick Levi Brown. Brown is absolutely terrible at pass protection and has allowed at least half of the Cardinals' sacks. Tapp is no Patrick Kerney, but his pass rush is a huge strength and something largely under appreciated by the press, the fans, and oddly, the team itself. This is a matchup the Seahawks should be expected to win, and really, they can't win the game without winning this matchup. Keep an eye on it. PicksATL over DEN, Matt Ryan is the best rookie we will see in the league for a while. PHI over CIN, Honestly, Philly is too good to lose to a team like Cincy, right? GB over CHI, and if I ever hear how the Packers' mediocre year was the result of Brett Favre leaving I will not show restraint in my response. according to Football Outsiders quarterback DVOA rankings (for an explanation, go to their website). Aaron Rodgers ranks 12th, just behind Romo and ahead of Garrard. Favre ranks 22nd, just behind Joe Flacco and just ahead of our own Seneca Wallace. Yes, Seneca Wallace has been almost as good as Favre this year. No matter how much you think leadership counts in football, you can't rationally put the Packers's woes on that decision. IND over HOU, and does anybody else think it's weird that we might see a Manning-less, Brady-less postseason and nobody is saying anything about it? Weird. NO over KC, Can we please stop the misconception that Reggie Bush is a good rusher? Again this season, like the last, he ranks among the worst in the league. He's fantastic at receiving, but that's not the type of guy you want with a #2 pick. MIA over OAK, and what of course is the most interesting thing about the Favre saga is that the odd man out, Pennington, has done better than Favre or Rodgers. NYG over BAL, but it's going to be very, very close. I think that We'll see Eli become a mortal in this game. TB over MIN, because its in Tampa Bay. I would have put it the other way in the Dome. CAR over DET, because I'm never making the mistake of picking Detroit ever again. STL over SF, because one of these teams has to suck less. Or at least get lucky. PIT over SD, because one of the least reported stories of the season is that LT is having by far the worst season of his entire career. And it's not all the O-Line's fault. Such is the way of the 29 year old running back. TEN over JAX, because Tennessee is having the season I thought Seattle would have. Not necessarily 9-0, but an elite defense matched up with a slightly above average offense turning into wins. WAS over DAL, because Jason Campbell is becoming the best case scenario for Redskins fans. Also, Jim Mora, while responsible for that success, was never a consideration for the Hawks's job because of his lack of experience, a perfectly valid concern. The Redskins lucked out. It happens. CLE over BUF, because when I see Buffalo right now, I see below average offense with a below average defense. Why are they winning games again? They have a top 5 special teams, which counts for something, but Cleveland has a top 1 special teams. SEA over ARI, 34-28, because I think that Darryl Tapp is going to have one of those breakout games and really put some pressure on Warner, who is the exact prototype of the slow, immobile quarterback that the Seahawks defense was designed to pulverize. For the record, this is my upset of the week. Don't screw this up, Brian Russell. You can get all our articles for free in your inbox with the latest Seattle Sports' news.

3A Playoff Recap Round 1

Here are the results and recaps from tonights' first round games

Ferndale 42 West Seattle 3

West Seattle got handled. Casey Locker ran for three touchdowns and the Ferndale defense held West Seattle to a sole field goal in the 1st quarter. Overall, a great season for West Seattle. They upset O'Dea and sat atop the Metro league for most of the season with Eastside Catholic and O'Dea. Ferndale now will face a stiff test against another undefeated squad, Union

Prediction: Correct

Union 34 Timberline 14

A dark horse team to make it to the state championship, they will face top ranked Ferndale in a battle of the unbeatens next weekend.

Prediction: Correct

Eastside Catholic 13 Mount Si 12

It seems like this Eastside Catholic has an extremely difficult time losing a game. Down 7-6, with under a minute left in the game, Marion Bactol returned a kickoff 68 yards. Keep in mind, this is nothing new for Bactol, who has all of a sudden become the high school version Dante Hall this season by continually having unprecdented success returning kicks.

Okay, back to the game. Anyways, Zach Cuaresma threw a 13 yard pass to his teammate, Spencer Esau to win the game...Fairy tale ending, right? It's hard for me to comprehend how this team is doing what they're doing. They're one of the smallest teams I've ever seen, but this has made no difference. This team is special, but next week they'll face the most difficult team they've faced so far this season, Lakes.

Prediction: Correct

Lakes 21 O'Dea 16

This year wasn't going to be another O'Dea free ride to the championship. There was something different about this year's Irish team. After losing against West Seattle earlier in the season, O'Dea didn't look like they were impossible to beat anymore. With that said, there's a good chance O'Dea will return to its' dominatitive self next season. On the other hand, a nice gritty win for Lakes, preparaing them for another Metro team, the Eastside Catholic Crusaders.

Prediction: Correct

Liberty 21 Kennedy 17

At first this game looked like it was turning into a typical Kennedy blowout. Tre Watson and Nolan Washington both scored touchdowns in the 1st half going into halftime with a 17-0 lead. However, Liberty came back with fire in the 2nd half, scoring 21 points in the 2nd half, which is all they would need to upset Kennedy. Liberty now has earned the honors to face off against the best class 3A team, Bellevue.

Prediction: Wrong

Bellevue 35 Lindbergh 6

Lindbergh didn't stand a chance. They were outmatched by a much more talented and stronger squad. I have a good feeling Bellevue will  roll over Liberty next week.

Prediction: Correct

East Valley 17 Mount Spokane 14

I flipped a coin for this one  and it was Mount Spokane, however East Valley won so that is another

FAILed prediction

Meadowdale vs. Capital

Game Saturday at 1pm

2nd Round Games:

Ferndale vs. Union

Eastside Catholic vs. Lakes

Liberty vs. Bellevue

Mount Spokane vs. TBD

Interview w/ Sean Snead, Mount Si Running Back

Last week, Sean Snead led his team to a 33-9 victory, upsetting 10th ranked Peninsula. Sean Snead scored five touchdowns and ran for over 190 yards. Mount Si will play Eastside Catholic tonight, going in as underdogs. We got a chance to talk to Sean and find out what he thinks his team needs to do to pull off another upset.....

How did Mount Si turn it around? Going 1-3 and then winning 5 out of the last 6 and beating #10 Peninsula to earn a state berth is impressive.

We knew that we were a better team than our record showed and we just learned from our mistakes, perfected those skills in practice, and for our last six games we just tried to play mistake-free football and for the most part we accomplished that; especially in our last game against Peninsula.

What do you believe you and the team have to do to beat a really tough Eastside Catholic team? Will you prepare just the same as you have the past 6 games?

This season Eastside Catholic almost rushed for 2000 yards but only passed for 600 so for us to be successful, we will have to stop their running game. We also need to make sure we don't turn the ball over on offense. We will prepare the same way for this game as for any other, but we may be watching more of their film than we usually do during the regular season.

If you could name one college or pro running back that you model your game after, who would it be and why?

I don't really have one person that I model myself after, but I like how Brandon Jacobs of the New York Giants just runs people over.  I also look up to Adrian Peterson's speed and cutback abilities.

What side of the ball do you enjoy playing more, offense or defense? If you play in college what position are you most likely to play?

I love playing defense; I would rather be the one doing the hitting instead of the one getting hit.  For college, I would most likely play defense at inside or outside linebacker.

What are you plans for after high school? Playing college ball? Any scholarship offers? Schools of interest?

I would like to play college football at any level, and although I haven't received any scholarship offers, about 20 schools have shown varying levels of interest, so hopefully once the season is over I'll get an offer.  I would be happy going to any school on the West Coast.

Welcome Back Rick Neuheisel ! Err...

So, Rick Neuheisel said he's sorry, but should we accept his apology?

Like it or not, Rick Neuheisal is back. There is no way of downplaying his return. No way. After years of wandering from Rainier Beach High School as an assistant coach to the Baltimore Ravens as an assistant coach, he's back. Remember the Seattle Times' Special Report, "Victory in Ruins"?

Neuheisal was the coach during that time. Whether it was his fault or not, everyone can agree at least a little part of the blame belongs to him. Why have the Huskies been so bad for 6/7 years?

Maybe it was Neuheisal's offense first, defense second recruiting approach. But that's a big maybe. I would hate to play the "what if" game. But "what if"? Would the Huskies be where they are right now or would they be on the verge of a BCS Championship, or somewhere in between?

We'll never know.

Things happen for a reason, and in a brief flirtation with the past it's important to not get too involved in it.

Bottom line, Rick or as some call him, "Slick Rick" screwed the Huskies, even if it was in the smallest way. Now he's back to screw the helpless Huskies again, and this time he's going to be on the opposite sideline. It'll be interesting to see if the boo birds will be flying high when he comes out of the tunnel he's walked out of many times before. I can't wait.

Personal Note: It's gonna be weird seeing him on the visitor's sideline. Just plain weird.

Blog Talk: Tim Lincecum wins the NL Cy Young Award

Geoff Baker from Seattle Times:

Right now, he has a Cy Young and zero World Series titles. The M's are down one Cy Young. But that's it. The world hasn't ended. And it's not as if the M's got hosed completely in the deal. Brandon Morrow has delivered two excellent seasons in the bullpen when the Mariners needed him most. He remains a key part of this rebuilding team's future and we've only started to see what he can do. Morrow in the bullpen helped keep the Mariners in a playoff hunt until early September of 2007, which is more than Lincecum has done for the pennant hopes of the Giants.Steve Kelley from Seattle Times:

Sometimes the scouts are wrong. Sometimes a pitcher doesn't play to type. Sometimes a flexible flyer like Tim Lincecum gives lie to the measurables.

He is a pint-size power pitcher. A little guy with giddy-up. The kid next door, who just happens to have a 97-miles-per-hour fastball.

Seth Kolleon from Sports NW

Lincecum is not only the first University of Washington player to win a major baseball award, he's the first to get even remotely close. Kevin Stocker finished 6th place in voting for the 1993 Rookie of the Year, which was unanimously awarded to Mike Piazza.

I'm so happy for Lincecum. He's basically shutdown any traditional baseball scout that has said his quirky delivery would hinder his ability. Not many people know that Lincecum never ices his arm. Never. Almost every top pitcher in the major leagues ices their arm after every start. Lincecum on the other hand never does.

I'm looking forward to see if he'll be able to exert the same dominance he has had this year, next season...It's always nice to see a former UW  Husky win at something...

3A State Football Playoff Predictions, Rd.1

The High School football will season is coming to its' climax, the playoffs are here. Last year the state was treated to an epic championship game between Skyline and O'Dea. This year Eastside Catholic, Kennedy, and Bellevue are the top teams to watch out for...

Without further adieu, here are my predictions for round 1 of the Washington State Class 3A playoffs:

West Seattle vs. Ferndale-This is the marquee game of the first round. West Seattle has two plays. T.J Lee left and T.J Lee right. If Ferndale can somehow contain the running game of West Seattle then they will have an easy path to victory. This is West Seattle's first time in the playoffs in a long time, I think that an well-tested Ferndale team will come out on top.

Timberline vs. Union- I see no reason why Union, who is undefeated, would lose now. They're just flat out better than Timberline.

Eastside Catholic vs. Mount Si- The Eastside Catholic Crusaders are peaking at the right time. Mount Si won't be able to handle the run game of Marion Bactol and Mike Bush...this could be a blowout.

O'Dea vs. Lakes-This is the 2nd best game of the 1st round, both teams are traditional powerhouses. O'Dea has suffered some sort of a "decline" this year. They didn't win the metro title and LOST a metro regular season game, something that hasn't happened for over 10 years. This just goes to show how high expectations are for the O'Dea Irish. I'm picking Lakes here in a close battle, I don't think the Irish offense will be able to move the ball against Lakes.

Liberty vs. Kennedy- Kennedy has returned to powerhouse status while Liberty has had a pretty decent season as well. Will Liberty be able to stop Tre Watson? That is the question. Probably not. No one has been able to stop Tre Watson, who has seen the end zone on 26 different occasions this season

Lindbergh vs. Bellevue- An easy matchup for Bellevue, expect a blowout. We interviewed Jacob Allie the QB of Lindbergh the other day, check it out here.

Meadowdale vs. Capital- This one looks to be close, but I'm going to take playoff veteran Capital in this matchup.

Mount Spokane vs. East Valley- In the battle of eastern Washington teams, I'm going to flip a coin for this one. Mount Spokane is heads. East Valley is tails. Heads. Mount Spokane wins.

Am I completely wrong on any of these? Let me know...
