If you haven't heard of the Jena Six, your not the only one. They are completely ignored even though they are being treated completely unfairly for their situation. At Jena High School in Jena, Lousiana in 2006 a black student asked the faculty whether or not he could sit underneath a tree that is usually reserved for white people. That's right there are sections in this school where the people of different races go. The faculty told him that he could, but the next day there were nooses hanging around the tree. They were colored the school colors and were hung up by white students. The students that put these up were later expelled, but that decision was overturned by the superintendent. He said that the nooses were just a prank. At a party that happened later Bailey was ganged up on by white students and beaten. Also, some of the black students were in an argument with a white man at a convenience store. The man went to his car and grabbed a pistol grip shot gun. When he came back the students wrestled the gun away and fled the seen. Later they were charged with theft of an firearm, disturbing the peace, and second degree robbery while the other man got away clean. No one took any action or disciplined the boys that took part in the fight. The next day a student named Justin Baker started talking about how Bailey was beaten up and how the other boys got in the argument with the other man. He started using racial slurs so the six boys took offense and beat him up. The fight was broken up by coaches around the school and Baker had to be taken to the hospital. He was released later and attended a school dance later that night. Later the boys found out that they were going to be charged with second degree attempted murder. Are you kidding me. For being in a fight where the student was not very harmed, just some cuts and bruises. Robert Bailey, 17, Theo Shaw, 17, Carwin Jones, 18, Bryant Purvis, 17, Mycal Bell, 16 and an unidentified minor were all expelled from school. In July Mycal Bell was sentenced to up to 22 years in prison for his part in the fight. He was sentenced by an all white jury. When the Duke lacrosse case was national news, not many people have heard about it, at least in the north. I know ESPN just had a section on Outside the Lines about this situation, but people still do not realize the entire situation. One of the boys was a star football player that was being recruited by big time schools and no longer has a place to play and schools most likely will not want to offer a scholarship to someone that has been arrested for attempted murder. We have to do something to help this kids out. There is an online petition to help them get the correct legal action. This includes an investigation in this case and a legal defense that can actually stand a chance in this case. Please sign this petition to help these young men out.
