Best thing that can happen for the
Detroit Pistons is the fact that the
Boston Celtics, behind their three superstars are getting all the Eastern Conference love. Ok, well maybe not all the love...but they're getting enough to draw the attention off the Pistons for a change.
It is easy to say the past two seasons Detroit has been the favorite to come out of the East, yet they have been knocked off in the Eastern Conference Finals each of the last two years. Arguably, it took one guy to take them out each time. in '05 it was Dwayne Wade turning into superman to run the Pistons out and last year Lebron with his game 5 heroics trumped anything the Pistons had to fire back with. The Pistons have always had the talent to come out of the East, it is the attitude and coaching that has held them back.
Each of the last two years the Pistons have admitted they were the better team, but just came up short. Especially last year, after a game 6 eruption from
Rasheed Wallace.
This year all the attention should be set on the Big Ticket (
Kevin Garnett) and the rest of the
Boston Celtics. Hands down, they have the best trio in the NBA with
Paul Pierce,
Ray Allen and KG. Sure, they're a little thin on the bench, and have two unproven starters in
Kendrick Perkins (C) and
Rajon Rondo (PG) however, look what Cleveland had last year when they went to the finals? Lebron James, a broken down old
Zydrunas Ilgauskas, beat up
Larry Hughes and a bunch of role players.
Daniel Gibson was not even an option for the Cavs in the regular season, and out of nowhere he comes in to torch the Pistons from beyond the arc.
Yet, last year the Pistons were the favorites, they were the team that everyone expected to reach the finals. That team had a sense of entitlement and felt they could show up and they would reach the Finals. They have played like that the past two years under Coach Flip Saunders. It was just like the upset of the century in college football this year, Michigan vs. Appalachian State. Michigan felt they could show up and win, and they got caught with their "pants down" so to speak. Same issue with the Pistons the past two seasons.
Detroit will rack up a ton of regular season wins, and should be a high seed in the playoffs. However, if Boston can steal that regular season luster and give the underdog card back to the Pistons, we might get to see that team we saw when they reached back to back finals a few years back...
