Green Bay Packers running back Noah Herron thwarted a would-be burglar by hitting him with a bed post during a break-in at his home.

Brown County Sheriff Dennis Kocken said Tuesday that the break-in happened late last Friday and the injured intruder remained hospitalized but is expected to recover.

" Noah Herron used necessary, reasonable and justifiable force in protecting his life and property," Kocken said in a statement. "Herron, the victim in this random home invasion, is cooperating with law enforcement."

Herron, 26, missed all of last season with a knee injury.

Chief Deputy John Gossage said Herron called police at 11:19 p.m. Friday after he heard glass breaking in the lower level of his suburban Green Bay home. He said an unknown number of people had entered the house.

One of the intruders entered Herron's bedroom, and Herron hit the person with a post he had unscrewed from his bed, Gossage said. Herron was not injured.

The injured burglar was taken to a hospital, and a second suspect was arrested outside the home, Gossage said.

Stolen property and a vehicle believed taken earlier Friday from another home were found near Herron's home, Gossage said. The two people in custody are suspects in numerous burglaries and home invasions throughout Brown County, he said.

Pittsburgh took Herron in the seventh round of the 2005 draft out of Northwestern. The Packers signed him off the Steelers' practice squad in 2005.

Packers general manager Ted Thompson released a statement Tuesday, saying the team knew about the break-in and had no comment.

As the 2008 NFL season nears, the Oakland Raiders are in a period of transition. Since the Super Bowl in 2003, where they were destroyed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 48-21, the Raiders have compiled a 19-61 record. By far, this is the worst record of any team in that period, and having four different coaches won't help change that. On Jan. 22, 2007, the Raiders entered the era of head coach Lane Kiffin. Oakland ended Kiffin's first season with a 4-12 record and the fourth pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. But in Kiffin's first year, the Raiders had drafted the quarterback of the future, JaMarcus Russell, who despite holding out for an extended time, played well in his limit playing time. They also established a top-flight rushing attack under offensive line coach Tom Cable, as well as splashing signs of the potential to be a contender in the AFC West, as six games were decided by seven points or less.

The Oakland Raiders' Third Annual Raiders Golf Classic raised more than $170,000 for Special Olympics Northern California.

Some 200 golfers joined Oakland Raiders players, legends and coaches in the event for a round of golf Thursday at Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton.

Raiders legends including Ben Davidson, Willie Brown, Ted Hendricks, Jim Plunkett, Eric Allen and Tom Flores were on the course, as were current players and coaches including Lane Kiffin, Ronald Curry, Darren McFadden and Sabastain Janikowski.

Proceeds from the event will help fund the Special Olympics Summer Games June 6-8 at the University of California, Berkeley. The games will bring together more than 900 Special Olympics athletes from throughout Northern California to compete in aquatics, track and field, bocce, tennis and volleyball.

Special Olympics Northern California is a free year-round sports program for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

OAKLAND RAIDERS

This is nothing more than a wild hunch. Sure, the Raiders look to still be the most dysfunctional team in football. But they have plenty of talent on the roster and, no matter what Al Davis thinks, Lane Kiffin can coach.

JaMarcus Russell is as physically talented as any quarterback in the league and he's going to get to play this year.

And maybe the apparent chaos is part of Davis' master plan, if he's got one. Sometimes, when it seems like the rest of the world is against you, a team will pull together and surprise everyone.
