Kennesaw State Picked to Repeat in Women's Soccer

Macon, Ga. â€" Jacksonville junior forward Keri Zwikker (Woodstock, Ontario) earned the top individual honor and Kennesaw State swept the team honors in the 2007 Atlantic Sun Conference preseason women's soccer awards.

Zwikker added the preseason Player of the Year award to her impressive list of honors; she was a member of the 2005 and 2006 First-team All-Conference teams and was the Freshman of the Year in 2005. In her first two years, she has tallied 24 goals and scored 61 points in 43 career games.

"It's a great honor to be voted by the conference coaches, but I look at this as a reflection of what we have accomplished as a team," said Zwikker. "Right now, I'm just looking forward to starting preseason camp and getting a chance to mesh with my teammates, both new and old, as we build off of last season's success."

The Owls, the 2006 regular-season champion, were picked by the coaches to again win the regular season title and to follow it up with the A-Sun Conference Tournament title, which will again be held at Kennesaw State's Soccer Complex. The Owls earned 10 of the 12 first-place votes. In its first two seasons in the Atlantic Sun, Kennesaw State is 16-2-1 in regular-season conference games.

"We're delighted to have been picked by the coaches to win both the regular season crown and the A-Sun Tournament, " Kennesaw State head coach Rob King said. "We know that this early recognition makes us a target, but we wouldn't want it any other way. Soccer in the Conference is getting stronger each year, we have a young team for the fall and I'm looking forward to seeing how our players respond to the challenge."

The Owls were well represented on the preseason All-Conference team, placing three on the squad, defender Whitney Marler and midfielders Maylee Attin-Johnson and Sara Clapham.

Three shared the honor as top goal keeper. UNF Rachael Howard, Mercer's Jean Worts and Sarah Wyszynski from Gardner-Webb each garnered the vote of three coaches.

The Atlantic Sun Conference, headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Florida Gulf Coast, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, UNF, Stetson, and USC Upstate.
