Odds and Ends: Sabathia, Price, Reds, Mariners, Cardinals

Ken Rosenthal says that the Brewers' decision to start CC Sabathia on three days' rest could hurt the free-agent hurler right before he hits the open market. And he says David Price, coming out of the bullpen, could do for the Rays this posteason what Francisco Rodriguez did for the Angels in 2002.

Dusty Baker likes the Reds' chances in 2009. Even though they've got nine free agents, Baker likes their "young nucleus" and speed.

Mariners' watchers are looking forward to the day 19-year old prospects Phillippe Aumont and Michael Pineda join the rotation---

Report: Red Sox trade Ramirez

NEW YORK (TICKER) a€"The Boston Red Sox apparently have grown tired of Manny being Manny.

The Boston Red Sox dealt disgruntled slugger Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers minutes prior to Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline, according to a report posted by si.com.

The trade initially was reported by NESN, the Red Sox television station, which stated that Boston received Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jason Bay in what evidently is a three-team deal.

The reported deal came one day after Ramirez criticized the Red Sox in an interview with ESPNDeportes, claiming that he has been mistreated by the defending World Series champs.

Former Yanks great Murcer dies at 62.

We have lost a legend today. Bobby Murcer, a personable, popular five-time All-Star who went on to a successful broadcasting career with the New York Yankees, died Saturday after a battle with brain cancer. He was 62.

After experiencing a general lack of energy, Murcer was diagnosed with a tumor on Christmas Eve 2006, undergoing surgery at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Pathology reports later revealed the tumor to be malignant.

George Steinbrenner said, "Bobby Murcer was a born Yankee, a great guy, very well-liked and a true friend of mine. I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife Kay, their children and grandchildren. I will really miss the guy."

After being diagnosed, Murcer commented in an upbeat spirit, thanking fans for their prayers and warm wishes -- many of which were delivered in the form of letters and e-mails directly to his hospital bed.

"My heart remains true to Yankees fans," Murcer said on Jan. 24. "I've always believed you're the very best in baseball. It's your steadfast spirit that keeps me feeling so optimistic."

Support The 'Stache!

NEW YORK -- First, it was the Yankees, spreading their rallying cry of "Support the 'Stache" throughout the Bronx. Then it was the American Moustache Institute, officially supporting Jason Giambi's candidacy in the Monster 2008 All-Star Game Final Vote. Now, it's the Yankees again, distributing fake moustaches to the first 20,000 fans in attendance at Wednesday's game. Seems this whole moustache thing is catching on.

"Just think, the Big G -- an icon," Giambi said. "A fashion icon."

Something like that. Giambi had more pressing issues far from the catwalk on Tuesday -- he continued to trail both Evan Longoria of the Rays and Jermaine Dye of the White Sox in voting to earn the final spot on the American League All-Star team. Jose Guillen and Brian Roberts are also vying to make the AL roster. To that end, the Yankees announced an initiative to distribute fake moustaches to fans prior to Wednesday's game with the Rays, in what they're calling the "first moustache giveaway in Yankee Stadium history." Likely the last, as well...

Is Baseball Becoming A Rich, Fancy Man's Sport?

In the "Good" old days that your parents and grandparents talk about when bazooka gum was 5 cents and there were only a few channels , kids would run to the closest ballpark and watch a great baseball game in the bleachers for whatever the price, i've heard 75 cents once. What I'm getting at is that it seems like baseball is becoming a sport for the proper people who have more money than they know what to do with. Today, bleacher seats are 10 dollars and the stadium is filled with clubs to watch from and for the super rich, luxury boxes. The few times I've been in a luxury box, while the first time was special, I didn't ever really feel at the game and it almost felt like watching it on tv, away from all the drunk and crazy fans.

The idea to write this article came when I saw that someone was suiing New York City (owners of Shea) for being hit with scraps of a bat and destroying his face. How do you get hit in the face with pieces of a bat first? Most people with duck, unless he wasn't paying attention. There are even rumors that nets might be put along the seat and i think thats terrible. First off, there would be no more diving into the stands to catch the ball a la Derek Jeter. Plus, it would take away a lot of the thrill of going to the ballpark. Kids dream of catching a foul ball, that would be taken away. it would take away the thrill of a baseball, always holding your glove, just waiting for a ball to come, although it usually never comes.

To sum it up, going to a baseball game is supposed to be a special experience, from the chance of catching a foul ball to sitting in the crowd of deticated fans. So take away most of the luxury boxes and clubs, dont put up the nets(but keep the one behind the plate or people could die), and people should pay attention to the game to defend themselves, you are warned at the begining of the of the game of flying objects! Do you really want America's game of our grandparents to change?

Who has the most All0stars

There has been debate about who should vote for the All-star teams but in the end, the teams usually end up equally, even if the AL team always wins. This year's voting has been filled with late overtakings including the young wiz kid Ryan Braun overtaking Ken Griffey Jr. This year there are two teams tied for most All-stars at seven, one team having a great season and the other having a somewhat disappointing season currently in second place.

Jason Giambi: Steriod Used to All-star

I'm long past the point of actually caring about who makes baseball's All-Star teams and who doesn't.

When I was a kid I looked forward to seeing all the game's icons on one field competing against one another on one special night. In an age when there was only a game-of-the-week and you followed the home team mostly on radio (God, am I dating myself or what?), I loved watching one league's great pitchers duel the other league's great hitters.

But now, in an age when local teams are on TV every night, in an age of SportsCenter and interleague play, baseball's annual company picnic has lost its pop like an aging power pitcher.

YANKEES OWNER BLAMES 'OUTSIDE DISTRACTIONS' FOR OFFENSIVE WOES

With Alex Rodriguez's budding friendship with Madonna making headlines, New York Yankees owner Hank Steinbrenner is hinting that "outside distractions" are causing the team's offense to break his heart.

Steinbrenner told The Associated Press today, "We've got to start hitting. It's getting ridiculous."

Though he did not mention Rodriguez by name, Steinbrenner said, "We all know they're better than that. I don't know. Maybe a little less outside distractions and a little more concentrating and they'll start hitting better."
