My Top 10 WNBA Moments of the 2008 Season
10. The Atlanta Dream
Atlanta finally gets a franchise! We all knew it wouldn't be a pretty season for them, but that is a team that lost a lot of extremely close games! I think with a few tweaks here and there they could be competitive. Betty Lennox had a good season and I think that they can build on that for next season. Im not sure how long Betty will play, but as long as she is there she will play her ass off and give 100% every game. 9. The Detroit Shock The Detroit Shock is a team that is always competitive. Win or lose they are always exciting to watch, whether its Tweety pullin up for a jumper.... and when she pulls up.... she seriously gets some air! Or Katie Smith continuing to be one of the best in the game. You can always count on Pierson playing physical, you can always count on Lambier being animated. But the Shock brought even more to the floor this season, the traded to bring in Taj, the rookie Hornbuckle has played great and will continue to get better, the brought Nancy Lieberman back!!! But the big thing for them this season was the proved to be dominate in the east and then the league when the swept the San Antonio Silver Stars in the WNBA finals winning their 3rd WNBA Championship. So are they truly a dynasty? 8. The Outdoor Classic The New York Liberty hosted the Indiana Fever for the first ever outdoor WNBA game at Arthur Ashe Stadium. It was hot as hell that day and those girls went out and balled! I hope that the Outdoor Classic becomes an anual event, it brings in good publicity for the league and it takes it back to the old school when everyone was ballin outside! 7. Expect Great .... Ummmmmm Well the first round of Expect Great commercials did NOT hit the spot at all. Instead they came off as if the league was making fun of its self even though it was supposed to prove the naysayers wrong and show them that every thing that they think about the WNBA is false. Well those commercials were really bad. But then round 2 comes and we get Bird and Taurasi. I loved Birds commercial and Taurasi.... sh*t, just let her get in front of the camera and wing it! She has enough personality, swagga and enough sh*t talk to make any campaign good and make it succesful, but they didn't allow that to happen. :( 6. The Brawl Los Angeles vs Detroit.... Cooper vs. Lambier... the rookie vs. the vet. Lopsided suspensions, Lisa Leslie floppin on her ass.... ahhh the sweet smell of drama! In my opinion Candace was the shit for standing up for herself when Pierson came charging at her when she was still on the ground......... however, Candace should have gotten the same suspension as Pierson. Maybe it was Piersons rep that earned her the bigger suspension or Detroits rep in general, but whatever it was, it wasn't fair. 5. Sylvia Fowles - First Goaltending Call in WNBA History Even though Sylvia Fowles was injured on the block on DMJ and it ended up being called goaltending, it showed how much the womens game has progressed. If Sylvia Fowles wasn't injured on that play she would have gave Parker a run for her money for Rookie of the Year! After the Olympics, Fowles came back like a beast!! 4. Becky Hammon's Olympic Decision When Becky Hammon announced that she would in fact play for Russia in the 2008 Summer Olympics a media frenzy broke out. There seemed to be no grey area with the situation. You either supported her or you hated her. I say hate because it is exactly what some people feel. I myself started supporting her when it was just a rumor. The rumors started circulating that either Becky Hammon, Deanna Nolan, or Kelly Miller would be playing for the Russian National Team. And it quickly became a reality that Becky was the one that would be playing. The media jumped all over the story. In a day of age where the American Government is pushing patriotism down everyones throat, Becky Hammon decides to live out her dream in a Russian uniform on the world stage! GO BECKY GO!!! From the jump I was all for this. Team USA didn't want her, Anne Donovan, Jennifer Azzi, and other members of various Team USA Committees spoke out against her saying she was unpatriotic and even going as far as saying she didn't deserve to be American.... (WTF!!!) ..... All over the game of basketball. Many of Hammon's peers in the league, including, Sue Bird, Betty Lennox, Sophia Young, & Diana Taurasi gave their support and said she is just living her dream, even though some would be playing against her in China. When all was said and done, Hammon left China with a bronze medal and all of her friends, family, and fans being very proud of her. Still makes no sense to me how she wasn't on Team USA. Oh well, she was there and got the experience of it all, and that's all that matters. 3. The 2008 WNBA Draft Class Wow! I don't know if I have ever seen so many talented athletes in one year. Parker, Wiggins, Fowles, Mitchell, Larkins, Hornbuckle, Carson, Holt, Larkins.... the list goes on and on! I'm not sure if we will ever see a draft like this one again. And it was amazing watching all of the rookies play this season. Parker exceeded ever expectation we all had of her. Mitchell played amazing for NY. Hornbuckle has stepped into the WNBA and has become a force to be reckoned with. All of this and we havent even seen the best that Fowles and Wiggins have to offer yet! Both of them suffering injuries during the season hampered their full potential, but that didn't stop Wiggins from being named 6th woman of the year! She is going to continue to get better and better. And Sylvia Fowles...... OH MY!!! I can't wait to see her next season. She will be playing in Russia during the off season so by time the WNBA season starts she is going to be even better!! 2. Sophia Young's Game Winning Shot in Game 2 of the WCF What a way to win a game! Seriously! Isn't that EXACTLY what your dreams are as a kid! A game winning shot with the season on the line! And being a Silver Stars fan you can imagine how it felt for me to see that shot drop. I all but thought the game was over... but with 1.3 seconds left on the clock I remember saying, noooo that's enough time to catch and shoot so I stood... yes stood there in front of the tv watching and when the shot dropped I went as nuts as the fans that were there at AT&T Center! When just seconds before the LA Sparks were already celebrating and thinking they were going to the Western Conference Finals. NOT. Sophia... that shot was amazing! I love this game! 1. Candace Parker What else can I say. Candace Parker has raised the bar. She not only came in and was able to compete as a rookie, but she dominated as a rookie. Pulling down Rookie of the Year, the league MVP and All WNBA First Team! Not to mention Parker dunked twice this season. Oh yeah... and we can't forget about the brawl now can we? Her one game suspension created uproar from fans and even players spoke out against it. And even though I was glad to see Parker have some spine and stand up to PP, I also thought she deserved the same punishment. But what is done is done and Candace was simply amazing this season.
