Wins the AWA World Heavyweight Championship Seven years into his career and after a two year stint with the WWE, Hennig got his first taste of singles gold when he defeated Nick Bockwinkel for the AWA World Heavyweight Championship. For the next year, Hennig would reign atop the promotion with their main title. He would feud with the Gagne family during this time and the WWE took notice.
