STAMFORD, Conn., February 22, 2013 – WWE has extended an invitation to talk show host and political commentator, Glenn Beck to appear live this Monday on Raw, in response to a segment that aired on TheBlaze TV yesterday. In the segment, Beck references WWE as “stupid wrestling people,” when criticizing a recent WWE storyline involving WWE characters Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio, Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter. WWE is giving Beck the opportunity to address our 14 million weekly viewers and our global fan base, as he believes we are offending our “conservative” fans with this storyline.
Similar to other television shows and feature films, WWE is in the entertainment business, creating fictional characters that serve as protagonists or antagonists. To create compelling and relevant content for our audience, it is important to incorporate current events into our storylines. WWE is creating a rivalry centered on a topical subject that has varying points of view. This storyline was developed to build the Mexican American character Del Rio into a hero given WWE’s large Latino base, which represents 20 percent of our audience.
For All Mankind DVD cover:
Here is the cover for upcoming WWE DVD/Blu-ray release For All Mankind, scheduled to go on sale April 16th…
Nielsen to count streaming devices:
Nielsen the company that puts out television ratings is revising their system to include viewings through streaming devices and some online services. This could potentially give WWE higher ratings because of Hulu and those that use various non-TV devices to watch the show. Obviously this won’t include illegal downloads.
Darren Young out for 8 months:
In some unfortunate news one half of the Prime Time Players, Darren Young, will be out for 8 months rehabbing his knee injury.
Keelan’s Call: The real story may be what happens to Titus O’Neil. Will he break out as a single’s star? He’s certainly showing some charisma and he obviously has a larger than life look which the company traditionally goes after.
Ric Flair discusses his son & daughter’s progression:
Wrestling legend Ric Flair recently spoke with local Tampa outlet WTSP.com about Reid and Ashley’s progression in the business…
“[Ashley] surprised me. I took her to Wrestlemania in Miami in 2012. All my friends have known her forever. She was playing sports in college, and she was an all-American cheerleader. I think just being around all the guys that weekend just sold her on it. Three months later she was in Tampa training. It’s very cool. It runs in the family; her brother is in Tokyo wrestling.”
“If you worry about getting hurt, you can’t be in this business. They’re both pretty tough, mentally and physically. Ashley may be the best athlete I’ve ever met. All the things she can do, her athletic ability. To be a Division 1 volleyball player, cheerleading and a gymnast. She’s 5-feet-11, weighs 150 pounds with 13 percent body fat.”
Flair also revealed how much he can bench…
“Right now? Probably 275 or 300 pounds. I haven’t worked out in about 6 or 7 weeks. For my age it’s miraculous. In the old days I used to wrestle every day and work out. Literally 365 days a year, twice on Saturday and twice on Sunday.”
