Recently WWE parted ways with Superstar Matt Striker. Striker did it all. We was a color commentator, back stage interviewer, manager, and of course wrestler. Striker was born to a Jewish father, but not does not consider himself a man of any one religion. We caught up with Striker to learn a little bit about his upbringing and his wrestling life.
1) Tell TGR a little bit about yourself. What was your upbringing like? Were you raised in a Jewish home?
GREW UP IN A VERY FAMILY ORIENTED HOME.THERE WAS A LOT OF LOVE.
RELIGION WAS NEVER PUSHED BUT THE AWARENESS OF GOD MOST DEFINITELY WAS.
MY FATHER GREW UP IN THE BRONK DURING THE 40S AND 50S AND PEOPLE WOULD
TELL ME TALES OF HOW THE IRISH OR ITALIAN KIDS WOULD COME INTO PELHAM
PKWY IN THE BRONX TO BEAT UP ON THE JEWISH KIDS AND ALL THE JEWISH KIDS
WOULD RUN TO MY FATHERS DOOR TO COME OUT AND FIGHT FOR THEM- WHICH HE
PROMPTLY DID. SO BEING JEWISH WAS SOMETHING
THAT MY FATHER WORE WITH PRIDE- WITH THAT SAID MY FATHER WAS VERY AWARE
OF THE STEREOTYPES AND REASONS THAT ANTI SEMITISM EXISTED AND TOOK GREAT
STRIDES TO NOT BE LUMPED IN WITH THE PROTOTYPICAL STEREOTYPES.
2) What was it like going from school teacher to professional wrestler?
COME TRUE IT IS SURREAL BUT THROUGHOUT IT ALL I KNEW I WAS BEING
GUIDED. I PUT VERY LITTLE VALUE ON THINGS OF THIS EARTH- RELATIONSHIPS,
EXPERIENCES, POSSESSIONS. EVERYTHING IVE EVER DONE I KNOW TO BE STORED
UP FOR ME FOR WHEREVER I MAY GO ONCE THIS LIFE IS OVER. PEOPLE
TELL ME ITS SAD THAT I HAVE NO EARTHLY DESIRES BUT THATS HOW I AM , HOW
I AM PROGRAMMED. MY HEART LEADS ME. THE VOICE IN MY HEAD IS LOUD AND
CLEAR. I AM A VEHICLE FOR ENERGY AND NOTHING MORE. MY LIFE IS NOT
IMPORTANT AND IVE OFTEN SAID - ANY DAY WILL DUE.
3) What got you into wrestling?
FATHER ASKED ME WHEN I WAS 7 YRS OLD IF I WANTED TO SEE SOMEONE FLY. WE
WATCHED SUPERFLY JIMMY SNUKA FLY ACROSS THE TV AND WE STAYED IN ON THAT
RAINY SATURDAY AND HE TOLD ME ALL ABOUT WRESTLING AND HOW HE BONDED
WITH HIS FATHER OVER IT AND SO WE WERE HOOKED.
4) You were such a big part of the NEW ECW, what was that like? Why did most of those guys (besides CM Punk) not make it in WWE?
TO SAY THEY DIDN'T? NO ONE EVER THOUGHT GUYS LIKE SANDMAN OR SABU OR
BALLS MAHONEY COULD MAKE IT IN WWE AND TO AN EXTENT THEY DID. RVD ? IS
WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A STAR. TOMMY DREAMER HAD A LONG CAREER IN WWE.
SO I THINK MANY OF THE GUYS " MADE" IT.SHEAMUS WAS A WWE/ECW PRODUCT AS WERE MIZ, PUNK AND A FEW OTHERS.I REALLY ENJOYED MY TIME WRESTLING NO MATTER WHAT " BANNER" IT WAS UNDER WHETHER IT BE RAW, SMACKDOWN! ECW ETC ETC...
would win in a battle royal of Jewish wrestlers; Colt Cabana, Raven,
Kane (we think he is Jewish), Marc Mero, Dean Malenko, Billy Kidman, or
EH, I THINK THEYD ALL COMPLAIN
ABOUT WHO WAS GOING OVER AND HOW MUCH THEY WERE BEING PAID. ( SEE
STEREOTYPES STILL LIVE AND ARE AT TIMES FUNNY )
6) Who was your favorite wrestler to be in the ring with?
DON'T REALLY HAVE A FAVORITE . I GUESS MY MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCES
WOULD BE WITH PEOPLE THAT I LEARNED FROM AND I LEARNED FROM EVERYONE I
WAS EVER IN THE RING WITH. GRANTED MOST OF THE TIME IT WAS LEARNING WHAT
NOT TO DO BUT ANY TIME YOU COMPETE- YOU GROW. FINLAY, WILLIAM REGAL, EUGENE, UNDERTAKER, JOHN CENA TRIPLE H, KURT ANGLE ARE GUYS I LEARNED FROM TO NAME A FEW.
7) What was the greatest match of your career?
WHICHEVER ONE PEOPLE ENJOYED MOST. MAYBE MY GREATEST MATCH IS STILL TO COME...WHO KNOWS
We too wish Striker the best in his future endeavors whether inside the ring or out.
And Let Us Say...Amen.
