Floyd Mayweather to pay for George Floyd's funeral

Former world champion and semi-retired professional boxer Floyd Mayweather will pay for the funeral of George Floyd, an African-American man who died while in Minneapolis police custody on May 25.

On Monday, an independent autopsy showed Floyd was killed due to "asphyxiation from sustained pressure" on his neck.

The former police officer who applied that pressure has been arrested and charged with third-degree murder.

CEO of Mayweather Promotions Leonard Ellerbe confirmed Mayweather will cover the costs for Floyd's memorial service while speaking with ESPN's Steve Kim.

"He'll probably get mad at me for saying that, but yes, [Mayweather] is definitely paying for the funeral," Ellerbe said.

Floyd's family accepted Mayweather's offer.

As Kim and Dan Rafael reported, Mayweather paid for the funeral of boxer Genaro Hernandez in 2011 after Hernandez passed away following a bout with cancer at the age of 45.
