Former welterweight champion Shawn Porter retires after loss to Terence Crawford

Former IBF and WBC welterweight champion Shawn Porter called it a career shortly after a loss to Terence Crawford late Saturday night. Porter told reporters at a post-fight press conference that the announcement was going to happen, regardless of the result.

"I was prepared to announce my retirement tonight -- win, lose, or draw," Porter said, "Even if it was a draw -- they had a date; they were telling us we were going to have to do it again -- I was not going to do it again. I'm announcing my retirement right now."

Porter, 34, began his career 24-0-1, winning the IBF welterweight title in the process. Porter won seven of his next 10 fights, including a WBC welterweight title fight against Danny Garcia. The loss to Crawford dropped his career record to 31-4-1.

All three judges had Crawford slightly ahead of Porter heading into the tenth round of their Saturday night bout. Porter was dropped twice in the round before his father and trainer, Kenny Porter, made the controversial decision to stop the fight from the corner. It marked the first time in Porter's career that he's been stopped.

Many felt the decision from Porter's corner to stop the fight was premature, including Errol Spence Jr., who narrowly beat Porter via split decision in 2019.

Porter has emerged as a rising star as a commentator, and recently served as a boxing analyst for NBC during coverage of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
