Jermall Charlo wants to avenge his brother Jermell Charlo’s defeat to Canelo Alvarez

Jermell boxed Canelo last year after jumping up two weight classes from 154 pounds to try and become undisputed at 168. Alvarez dominated the fight, dropping Jermell on his way to a unanimous decision win. The difference in weight was telling as Charlo’s punches failed to pack a punch. It was Jermell’s first loss, as the boxer’s next fight looks no closer to returning.

Jermall recently returned to the ring after more than two years out of the ring. The boxer was struggling with mental health issues, as there were worries over whether the WBC Middleweight Champion would return. Charlo returned to face Jose Benavidez Jr. He beat his opponent via a unanimous decision. However, Benavidez was coming up from 154 to fight over the 160 limit, as the bout failed to show Charlo’s current form. However, he is desperate to show that he can still compete at the top level, as he wants Canelo to be next.

Charlo On Canelo

“I’m going to get the revenge. I’m not enjoying this…no more. The money ain’t the issue. I got a birthday coming in a couple of days. I did enough. [And] I made history,” Charlo said

Nevertheless, a Charlo fight with Canelo is unlikely to sell. Alvarez will face Jaime Munguia on May 4. Canelo was criticized for not boxing David Benavidez. The Mexican Monster is the WBC Interim Super Middleweight Champion, a position he has been in for over two years. Both sides have blamed each other for the fight not happening.

Canelo claimed he wanted $150-200 million for the fight, while Benavidez’s camp saw that as Alvarez pricing himself out. If Alvarez does not face Benavidez next, boxing fans will not get behind a Charlo fight. Jermall was in the running to fight Canelo, but his brother got the fight instead. Given his recent mental health struggles, Jermall will unlikely give Canelo a competitive fight since he would move up from 160.

Charlo’s Struggles

“Dealing with all kinds of cases of [being] bipolar, being by yourself, thinking that you shutting the world out is gonna help you. But you need to be able to speak to someone and help you get past whatever you’re going through. ‘It just feels like everybody is against you, I don’t care if you’re in the Uber, a cab, wherever, everybody is just against you. Why I felt like this, [I don’t know]. ‘I couldn’t tell that some people weren’t against me, it was just that at the moment it’s the way you’re feeling and I turned my back against pretty much the world. I just had to start getting help with it and it made me a lot better,” Charlo stated

Jermall looks no closer to getting in the ring anytime soon, making the Canelo fight unlikely. Given that Alvarez has to appease the boxing fans who claim he is ducking Benavidez, there are better fights for him. A fight with Terence Crawford would arguably pacify boxing fans more than Charlo.
