Former Nebraska football linebacker Eric Fields officially entered the transfer portal on Tuesday. This was reported by multiple media outlets

Fields was part of the 2022 Nebraska football recruiting class, and he was a highly-regarded recruit coming out of Oklahoma. He was the 17th overall player in this class from the state of Oklahoma per the 247Sports rankings. He recorded almost 270 total tackles in his final two seasons for Ardmore High School in Oklahoma.

Nevertheless, he was never able to translate that skill to the collegiate level. He redshirted his first season with the program, and played on the scout team a bit. The coaching staff was high on him as he served his role last season, but it never really translated to on-field success.

This marks the second transfer of the day so far for the program. Former safety Corey Collier Jr. entered the transfer portal earlier Tuesday morning. The Huskers may have some more entries into the portal, with depth starting to accrue at several positions.

I personally really liked what I saw from his high school tape, and I thought he could have a role at the linebacker position. He wasn’t really one of the highly-touted recruits of the class. Nevertheless, his speed and skill were evident and I was curious to see how those two skills would translate at the collegiate level.

Linebacker a position of strength for Nebraska football

The linebacker position is pretty stacked right now as it is for Nebraska football. They have two linebackers coming in the 2024 class, as well as several on the roster already. This is a position that has depth, and Fields probably wouldn’t have gotten much playing time.

If anything, the transfer portal can work both ways. This gives Nebraska football another spot to land another talented player from the portal. It has been a busy couple of days for the program, with the spring game set for the end of the month.
