At Big Fight Weekend, we were looking forward to Edgar Berlanga making his Matchroom promotional debut. His first appearance for Eddie Hearn saw the New York-born fighter take on Jason Quigley at the New York Hulu Theater. Berlanga passed the test and advanced to 21-0 (16 KO), but it was far from plain sailing.
The judges scored the bout 116-108, 116-108, and 118-106, with Berlanga dropping Quigley four times. However, referee Harvey Dock made a noticeable error calling a knockdown in the fifth, which looked like a slip from Quigley. The Irishman boxed intelligently throughout making Berlanga miss, but The Brooklyn fighter’s work rate and power eventually wore down Quigley, which resulted in two decisive final-round knockouts.

Three Possible Fights for Edgar Berlanga: Jaime Munguia
Jaime Munguia is a possible opponent for Berlanga in his next fight. There has already been some back on fourth of Twitter between Oscar De La Hoya and Eddie Hearn. Munguia possesses a lot of power as proven with his 42-0 professional record, with 33 wins by knockout. The Mexican-born fighter has developed an effective jab as his career has progressed – but it feels there is more improvement possible with that jab.
Canelo Alvarez:
Canelo is a bonafide superstar. His 59 wins in 63 fights is proof of his class, with wins over Gennadiy Golovkin, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant. Alvarez possesses exceptional punching power, which has hurt many great fighters. He is effective at walking down his opponents and throwing intelligent combinations. If Canelo can land that devastating left hook, it’s hard not to imagine him adding to his long list of victims.
Gennadiy Golovkin:
Gennadiy GGG Golovkin has held multiple middleweight world championships and is a two-time former unified champion. He has consistently mixed at the top table in boxing fighting Canelo three times. Earlier in his career, he moved to 36-0, with a phenomenal 33 wins via knockout. His power has halted many talented fighters including Kell Brook. His body punching is sickening and capable of stopping any fighter. However, the Kazakhstani fighter has recently vacated his IBO Middleweight Title, making it unclear what comes next for Triple G.
