Kell Brook’s trainer Dominic Ingle called out Floyd Mayweather in wake of last night’s victory over Amir Khan – but could that fight ACTUALLY happen?
Considering Brook has not fought since being stopped by Terence Crawford in November 2020, we were in the dark as to exactly what version of the Sheffield-born fighter was going to be stepping into the ring with Amir Khan.
Brook has had a marvellous career, but at 35-years-old, you could have forgiven him if he dropped below the standards he has set for himself over the years during his much-anticipated grudge match with his long-term rival.
Special K didn’t disappoint, though. His speed, counter-punching and electric combinations were as spiteful and effective as ever before, with Khan deserving a significant amount of credit for making it to the sixth round. He received quite the beating.
Though Brook has sent Khan down the road to retirement, Brook’s trainer, Dominic Ingle, used the post-fight press conference as a platform to call out Floyd Mayweather on his fighter’s behalf, as was reported by The Sun.
Was it tongue in cheek? Perhaps, but stranger things have happened in the sport and Mayweather has shown an appetite to continue boxing even since his retirement.
There’s every possibility that, were Mayweather to agree on fighting Brook, it would merely be an exhibition bout which wouldn’t blemish his flawless professional record, were he to be defeated.
Still, there could be plenty in that for Brook, who would have the chance to fight one of the pound-for-pound greats without the risk of adding another defeat to his own record. There is, of course, also the financial factors to consider.
Mayweather vs Brook, the USA vs the UK, would be a bigger PPV draw than Khan vs Brook, even if British boxing fans have been waiting patiently for the best part of a decade for this fight to materialise.
Money follows Mayweather like sheep to a dog, with there definitely being worse avenues for Brook to pursue than seeking out a slice of that pie to inflate his bank balance even further ahead of his retirement.
His fans would have no qualms were he to sit down with his family and decide that now is the perfect time for him to hang up his gloves, but on the evidence of Saturday night, he still has plenty left in the tank.
You could argue that no fighter would ever have had a better opportunity to beat Mayweather, who is nine years older than Brook and underwhelmed last time out against YouTuber Logan Paul.
In truth, that’s exactly why we’d consider it unlikely that Mayweather would agree to fight him, but there’s no harm in Brook, Ingles and the rest of the team drumming up interest in the bout and putting pressure on the American.
