Boxer Anthony Joshua discusses possible retirement after KO loss to Daniel Dubois

It wasn't a fairy-tale ending for British heavyweight Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium in London, England. However, despite the outcome, he doesn't plan to hang up the gloves anytime soon.

On Saturday, in front of a UK boxing record 96,000 fans, many from his home country, Joshua's attempt at reclaiming the IBF heavyweight title came up short in the main event of the Riyadh Season card. Champion and fellow Brit Daniel Dubois retained the title, delivering a right-handed knockout in the fifth round.

For Dubois, the fourth time was the charm, having scored knockdowns in the first, third and fourth rounds. Before the fifth-round KO, Joshua was able to respond, but his overall shakiness throughout led to speculation that Saturday's fight could be his last.

On the surface, it seemed logical for Joshua, who turns 35 on Oct. 15. He sounded upbeat following his 33rd career bout, though, quickly dismissing any talk of retirement.

"You're probably asking if I still want to continue fighting," Joshua told reporters via Queensberry Promotions. "Of course, I want to continue fighting. That's what I am. I'm a warrior."

Joshua had won four consecutive fights since dropping the WBA (IBF, WBO, IBO) crown to Oleksandrander Usyk in August 2022. After Saturday's loss, he gave Dubois his flowers.

"When I sign up for opponents, I don't really like them anymore," Joshua said. "But now it's done, I take my hat off to him and his team."

It's the third straight victory for Dubois and his first defense of the IBF championship since winning the then-vacated title over Filip Hrgovic by TKO on June 1. The 27-year-old was understandably excited after the victory on Saturday, believing this to be only the start of his breakout.

"I'm just ready to go," Dubois said. "I just want to go to the top and reach my full potential."
