Top featherweight contender Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington is eyeing a summer return as he is at the doorstep of a world title fight.

The 28-year-old Carrington (15-0, 9 KOs) from Brooklyn, NY, was recently doing commentary for the overseas telecast of Emanuel Navarrete vs. Charly Suarez fight card on ESPN when FightsATW caught up with him.

The topic of discussion was his return to the ring, specifically when and who, as there have been rumors circulating that the WBA featherweight champion Nick Ball has a fight announcement coming soon, and WBC champion Stephen Fulton Jr. is looking to get a shot at WBC super featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster. That only leaves IBF champion Angelo Leo, who has a fight scheduled on May 24, and WBO champion Rafael Espinoza, who just fought a little over a week ago.

“For me, if these guys have ‘other plans,’ I just have to continue to put on these dominant performances and put myself in the position to become a mandatory,” Carrington told FightsATW regarding his current status at 126. “I’m ranked #1 in two sanctioning bodies (WBC & WBO), #2 with the WBA, and #4 with the IBF, so I’m right there. I feel like I’m knocking on the door and be able to soon kick down the door to become the mandatory for one of these title shots.”

When asked when the fans could expect his return, Carrington mentioned the summer, which would be only a few months removed from the third-round TKO victory in March over Enrique Vivas. “Hopefully sometime in July. I think we are definitely shooting for that. I’ll definitely be back in the ring real soon.”

Coincidentally, that July month is being penciled in for undefeated Puerto Rican contender Xander Zayas (21-0, 13 KOs) and Jorge Garcia (33-4, 26 KOs) to fight for the vacant WBO junior middleweight title. Carrington saying July could mean him landing on that card, especially if it ends up in NYC or Las Vegas. “Maybe,” said Carrington about being on Zayas-Garcia undercard. “We are in talks, maybe for that card or something after that. But yea, things are going to be happening real soon.”

If Carrington doesn’t fight in July, another date that could be available is September 12 on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford fight card. Carrington recently signed a deal as a Ring Magazine ambassador, which could give him a leg up on landing on a card of that magnitude. Carrington couldn’t hide his excitement about potentially being on that card. “Maybe,” said a smiling Carrington. “You don’t know. Shhh. Things are definitely in the mix, and I’m just going to be ready for whenever.”

Whichever card he is on, Carrington is slowly becoming a fan favorite with his warm personality and smart but aggressive fighting style. One thing is for sure: Carrington is one of the future world champions in boxing, and his career will be an entertaining one to follow.
