Crawford Wants To Continue After Canelo – Who Is Next?
Steven Branscombe-Imagn Images

Terence Crawford reportedly wants to continue fighting after the Canelo Alvarez bout, raising question marks over who he could face.

Crawford faces the biggest test of his career when he takes on Canelo for his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title on September 13. He will jump up two weight classes following his fight against Israil Madrimov at 154. A win makes Crawford a three-weight undisputed champion. Many see this as being Crawford’s final fight, especially if he wins. However, that may now not be the case. It is believed that Crawford wants 1 or 2 more fight if he beats Canelo, having allegedly told Turki Alalshikh this.

A Canelo rematch would be on the cards if he were to defeat the Mexican. Alvarez is a massive favorite, but faces pressure to come out on top having avoided the David Benavidez fight. A Crawford win also guarantees him another big payday against Canelo, although it is not clear if there is a rematch clause in the contract.

Options

Alternatively, Crawford could move back down to 154 pounds. He is the current WBA Junior Middleweight Champion. The WBC belt is held by Sebastian Fundora, while the IBF title is in the hands of Bakhram Murtazaliev, and the WBO is vacant. There is a scenario where Crawford could chase undisputed at 154, especially if he achieves it at 168. That arguably makes him one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Equally, there are still other big fights out there. Crawford could take the Errol Spence Jr. rematch at 154. Spence’s camp argued that he may have struggled to make 147, while the boxer admitted that he had vision problems, as he later underwent cataract surgery. Spence has not boxed since their 2023 fight, but he has not announced his retirement, leaving the door open for that fight.

There is also the Jermell Charlo fight. The former Undisputed Junior Welterweight Champion was ringside when Crawford stopped Spence. There was a feeling that was the fight to make at 154. However, Charlo boxed Canelo by moving up to 168, as he was longer undisputed. That made the fight less appealing, but it still is a big, commercially viable fight since they are at the latter end of their careers. Either way, Crawford has a decision to make.

“When he signed the fight for the Canelo fight, he said, ‘This is the last fight in my career, Turki. I want to do it right,’ and we signed it. I saw him in Riyadh. He said he’s enjoying it and wants to do one or two fights if he beats Canelo. I think it’s tough to beat Canelo, especially when you go two weights more, but Crawford is a legend. Let’s see what this fight will bring to us,” Turki Alalshikh  said
