The stage is set, and the Wembley Stadium lies in wait as Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) dons his gloves once again to face Daniel Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs) for the undisputed heavyweight title. Coming in fresh from a glorious run with consecutive wins against Tyson Fury , Usyk is a libretto whose ink refuses to fade. However, that is one lesson that Dubois wants to learn as he plans to rewrite the “script” on fight night.
Their final presser before fight night was a testament to the change that Dubois wishes to bring out. A cacophony of callouts and wild statements, Dubois vowed to ensure that the mistakes of their last fight weren’t repeated.
“Right now, I just want to get it on. I’m going to write my own script. They have their own script, I am going to write my own and win these belts and be the man,” he said.
Dubois first faced Usyk at the Wroclaw Stadium in 2023, where he fought for Usyk’s titles, albeit unsuccessfully. He certainly seems to have taken the necessary lessons from the fight, as he followed that loss with impressive wins against the likes of Jarrell Miller and Anthony Joshua.
And now with his redemption arc right around the corner, he admitted that he is taking it a step further by aiming for “glory” and “greatness”.
“This is history-making, and I have just got to do a real demolition job. I’m hungry and ready for it,” he said.
However, Usyk’s manager, Egis Klimas, is of the opinion that Dubois is still the very same fighter who fought Usyk two years prior. “It’s the same guy. What can he change in a couple of years? You cannot train your mind, and that I think is his weakness,” he said nonchalantly.
We could undoubtedly say that Klimas’ words are misplaced, as Dubois’ recent performances are a testament to how he has improved as a fighter. But his promoter, Frank Warren, was quick to come to his rescue.
“He certainly trained his mind against Miller, he certainly trained his mind against Hrgovic, and he certainly trained his mind against AJ. He’s got better and better,” he said.
